Chapter 4 The Noose Around My Wrist

Autor: Unsweetened Sugar
"A-About two years ago, I guess. At first, it was just a rash. Then the skin started breaking open every now and then. The doctor said it was dermatitis, and Wendy's been applying ointment for me every day."

"Every day?"

"Yeah."

"She knew your wrist had gotten this bad?"

"Of course she did." I instinctively defended Wendy. "She's even more worried about it than I am. Every night, she soaks my hand and puts medicine on it. Without her, I probably would've scratched it raw a long time ago."

Zane's expression only turned grimmer. He grabbed my hand before I could pull my sleeve back down. "Did she ever tell you to take the bracelet off?"

"No." I looked at him blankly. "Wendy's father said it's a family heirloom, so it can't be removed. Wendy said taking it off carelessly could damage it, and her father would be heartbroken."

"So you've kept it on this whole time?"

"Yeah."

Zane drew a slow, deep breath, as though he were forcing down some powerful emotion.

He stood up, walked over to his workbench, and returned with a penlight and a high-powered magnifying glass.

"Don't move."

"Zane… What the hell's gotten into you?"

He did not answer.

Switching on the flashlight, he shone the intense beam directly onto the bracelet.

Under ordinary lighting, the beads had looked deep black with an elegant green luster. But beneath the bright light, they revealed a murky gray tint, crisscrossed with countless spiderweb-like fractures.

Zane's hand jerked violently. He immediately picked up the magnifying glass and leaned in for a closer inspection.

The longer he looked, the faster he breathed.

"The color's all sitting inside the cracks. The internal structure's completely destroyed. It's been injected with way too much resin, and there are obvious signs of heavy acid treatment." He muttered to himself, almost in disbelief. "There's no fucking way this is an old heirloom!"

A knot formed in my stomach.

"So… it's fake?" I forced myself to sound casual. "Honestly, even if it is fake, that's okay. Maybe my father-in-law got scammed. It's the thought that counts."

Zane looked up at me. The expression in his eyes sent an icy chill crawling down my spine.

"Oh, I only wish it were fake…"

The smile froze on my face. "What do you mean?"

Instead of answering, he turned toward a cabinet and pulled out a pair of medical gloves along with a bottle of chemical reagent.

The degree of seriousness at this point genuinely frightened me. "Zane… don't scare me."

He clenched his jaw, keeping his voice low. "Moses, tell me something first. Who personally put this bracelet on your wrist?"

"Wendy's father."

"Was Wendy there?"

"She was."

"Did they specifically tell you that you could never take it off?"

"Yes."

"Besides your wrist, have you had any other health problems over the past few years?"

I thought about it for a moment. "Dizziness. Insomnia. Hair loss. Sometimes my heart races. I got checked out. The doctor said men in their thirties are under a lot of stress, so it wasn't anything serious."

The color vanished from Zane's face in an instant. He rushed over and seized my wrist.

His hand was ice-cold. Cold enough to make me shiver.

"Moses, take it off."

I stared at him. "What?"

His eyes remained locked on the bracelet, his voice trembling. "I said take it off. Right now. This instant. Get the damn thing off your wrist!"

Instinctively, I tried to pull my hand back. "It's the Zeiglers' family heirloom. I can't."

Zane's eyes turned red in an instant. He looked furious, terrified even.

"A family heirloom?" His gaze remained fixed on the black-and-green beads as he enunciated every word. "Moses… that's not obsidian. It's a noose wrapped around your wrist."

A loud buzz filled my head. "It's… not a stone?"

Zane tightened his grip on my hand.

Staring at the festering ring of flesh around my wrist, he spoke in a voice so hoarse I could barely hear it. "Schafer… if you keep wearing it… You're going to die."

"On the other hand, Chester has been very quiet. He's just aged incredibly fast. After his mother sold the house and used the money to pay compensation, she left the city they used to live in. No one knows where she went."I quietly listened to everything before lowering my head and blowing at the coffee in my cup, causing a tiny ripple to spread across the surface of the water. Soon, it became still again, just like my life. The times when I had been maliciously thrown into chaos by others were slowly settled down by time itself. Those names, voices, and images that once made me wake with a start in the middle of the night could barely stir much of a ripple in my heart. It was not because I had forgiven them, nor was it because I had forgotten. I had simply stopped imprisoning myself inside that nightmare. The real poisonous bracelet was later permanently sealed inside an evidence locker. It had once encircled my wrist. Now, it encircled the Zeigler family's crimes. After Zane

The judgment was over. I had won without the slightest doubt. When I walked out of the courthouse, the sunlight was just right. Zane was waiting for me at the bottom of the steps, holding two cigarettes. He handed me one. His eyes were red, but he was smiling."Moses, congratulations. From today onward, you're free."I raised my hand, lit the cigarette, took a deep drag, and looked up at the sky.It was so blue that it made me want to cry.At last, with my own hands, I had shattered the shackles called the "Zeigler family."…Two years later, in a quiet little city in the south, I opened a small antique jewelry restoration studio. The shop was not large, but it was bright. I had grown hydrangeas and jasmine by the entrance. There were several pots of mint sitting beside the window.I also had a cat named Fluffy. Its favorite thing to do every day was lie beside the cash register and bask in the sunlight.I restored genuine antiques and also helped many people identify jewel

Then, it was Ms. Selin's turn. She submitted the evidence in an orderly manner. The first piece was the criminal judgment against Wendy and Chester, and the evidence was irrefutable. As the party who had committed serious wrongdoing in the marriage, Wendy had no grounds to argue. The second piece was the insurance contract, the premium payment records, and evidence that Wendy had deliberately concealed the beneficiary designation and induced me to sign the documents. The third piece was the Zeigler family's bank transaction records showing their attempts to transfer assets before the case came to light.Every transfer, every account, and every point in time was clearly marked on the large screen. One week before I went to the police, Wendy had moved five million into an account under her mother's name, Rachel Mitson. There were also several redemptions of investment products, with the proceeds transferred into accounts belonging to distant relatives of the Zeigler family. They t

Only after a long while did I take the cigarette, light it, and nod gently."Yeah. I won."However, this victory had come too late, and it hurt too much.It took away six years of my youth, as well as every fantasy I had ever had about having a family. Moreover, it left a ring of scars around my wrist that would never disappear. On the day of the verdict, the internet exploded. The "Live-In Son-in-Law Poison Bracelet Case" became a trending topic, and many people were furious about it. People were terrified by how easily it could have happened to them, and many men began sharing the schemes they had experienced in their own marriages, which had been packaged as "for your own good."Their wives' families forced them to drink folk remedies, claiming they were meant to improve their health. Some were clearly allergic to certain materials, yet were still pressured to wear so-called family tokens. It was all just control disguised as love.My case was like a knife, cutting open wou

"Why couldn't you just keep wearing it? Why did you have to investigate?"The officers immediately stepped forward and restrained Chester, but he continued struggling wildly."A live-in son-in-law is nothing but a dog of our family! We support him, feed him, and give him respect, so what if we use him to make a little money? He was an orphan nobody wanted in the first place! If Wendy hadn't taken him into the family as a live-in husband, he would be nothing but trash!"The courtroom instantly descended into chaos.I sat there and looked at him with cold eyes.I watched Chester, who had once brought me soup and treated me nicely, finally tear away the last layer of his disguise. In the meantime, I watched Wendy, who had once held me in her arms and promised to support me for the rest of my life, slump in her chair, unable to say a single word.Suddenly, I felt that this was truly the most ironic scene I had witnessed in the past six years. That bracelet they called a "family heir

After that, the police submitted the other four similar bracelets recovered from the Zeigler family's old house.Their materials were highly consistent. When the labels reading "Gwen's Husband," "Wendy's Husband," and "Spare" were projected onto the large screen, the entire courtroom erupted. The opposing lawyer's expression finally changed. Still, he stubbornly clung to one argument."The Zeigler family did not know these items were harmful."Ms. Selin did not argue. She simply called the next witness, the insurance agent. The moment the middle-aged man stepped onto the witness stand, Wendy's face instantly turned pale. The insurance agent said, "Three years ago, before Ms. Zeigler purchased the insurance policy for Mr. Schafer, she repeatedly asked about claims involving death from overwork, death from chronic illness, and heavy metal poisoning. She was particularly concerned about the waiting period and exclusion clauses. I found it strange at the time, but she explained that
