Chapter 4

작가: Bright Lights
“Nathan, do you have no compassion at all?”

I laughed coldly and shot back, “You’re right. I’m nowhere near as kind as you. You’re so kind that not only did you get married to your assistant, you even brought him and his son home to live with you.”

Just then, Ryan, who had been silent the whole time, suddenly spoke.

His eyes were red as he took off the pajamas he was wearing, looking fragile and wounded.

“Nathan, Claire, please stop fighting because of me.

“If Nathan doesn’t want us to stay, I’ll take Noah and leave right now. It’ll just be harder for Noah to get to school from now on, that’s all. Claire, I’m already grateful that you helped Noah with his school registration. I wouldn’t dare ask for anything more...”

As he spoke, he exchanged a look with Noah.

The next second, Noah rushed forward and sank his teeth hard into my calf.

Blood welled from the bite mark.

But Noah still was not satisfied. He clenched his fists and started hitting me.

“You’re a bad man! Why do you get to kick Dad and me out? This is my home. If anyone should leave, it’s you!”

Only after Noah had beaten red marks into me did Ryan finally step in and carry him away.

“Nathan, he’s just a kid. He doesn’t know any better. Please don’t take it personally.”

Before I could speak, Claire cut in.

“Ryan, you and Noah can stay here in peace.

“Nathan, Ryan felt guilty about taking your turn at City Hall, so he bought you a gift to apologize. And you’re still being this petty? If you ask me, the one who doesn’t know any better is you.”

I looked over and saw half a soufflé that had already been eaten.

My voice turned cold.

“I’m allergic to eggs. I can’t eat that. And I’m not a trash can. I don’t have the habit of taking other people’s leftovers.”

Ryan’s tears immediately began to fall.

“Claire, I know Nathan thinks my gift is cheap, but this is already the best I can afford. If he doesn’t like it, he can just say so. Why does he have to be so passive-aggressive?”

Claire’s expression darkened. She picked up the half-eaten soufflé and shoved it toward my mouth.

“Ryan gave it to you out of kindness, and now you’re looking down on it?

“You can even come up with something as ridiculous as an egg allergy? Fine. Let’s see if you’re really allergic.”

I could not dodge in time.

The soufflé smeared across my mouth. The smell of egg hit me hard, and nausea surged straight up. It took me a long while before I finally spat everything out.

By the time I recovered, red hives had already spread across my body.

Only then did Claire remember that I really was allergic to eggs. Guilt flashed through her eyes.

“Nate, I...”

I did not bother listening anymore. I turned and went back to my room.

Claire followed me in and softened her voice.

“Nate, I only forgot about your egg allergy because I was angry. I’m sorry.”

I was wondering why Claire had suddenly become so easy to talk to when, the very next second, she revealed what she really wanted.

“But can you let Ryan and Noah stay here for now?

“Once Ryan finds a place, I’ll make them move out. After that, I’ll marry you to make it up to you, okay?”

So in the end, it was still for Ryan.

I pulled my hand away from Claire.

“There’s no need. I’ll move out right now and leave the happy family of three to yourselves.”

With that, I lowered my head and began packing.

When Claire saw that, she finally lost her temper.

“Nathan, I already backed down. What more do you want? Keep this up, and I’ll break up with you.”

I only gave a cold laugh.

“Perfect. I was thinking the same thing. Let’s break up.”

Claire froze.

She had only wanted to use the threat of a breakup to make me give in the way I always had.

She had not expected me to agree.

“Nathan, do you even know what you’re saying?”

I nodded.

After not seeing her for some time, Claire looked far more disheveled than before. Her hair was a mess, and her clothes were covered in dust. The old polished elegance was gone. I almost did not recognize her. When she saw me, her eyes reddened, and her face filled with grievance.“Nate, do you know how long I searched before I finally found you?“Nate, I truly know I was wrong this time. I’ve already fired Ryan. I deleted his contact information. I even got divorced from him. I promise I won’t have anything to do with him or Noah ever again.“Please stop being angry with me. Come back with me and get married, okay? I’ve already chosen the wedding venue, and the wedding outfits are ordered too. All that’s missing is you, the groom...”When Sophie saw Claire appear, she lowered her head in disappointment and stepped aside to make way for her.But I pulled Sophie into my arms and said to Claire, “I’m not going back with you. My girlfriend wouldn’t agree to that either.”Sophie’s eyes wid

[Nate, I’m back. Where did you go? Didn’t I tell you to wait for me where you were?][Are you on the bus now?][Where is your hometown? Tell me. I’ll come find you right now.]It was almost funny.Claire had gone back to Maple Creek with me several times, yet she did not even know where my hometown was.She really had ignored me to a ridiculous degree.I did not reply. I only blocked her and deleted her contact. After four hours on the bus, I finally returned to Maple Creek. My parents had been waiting for a long time. The moment they saw me get off the bus, they rushed over and took my luggage.“Son, you’re finally back! You have no idea how much your mother and I have missed you all these years!”It had been so long since I last saw them. My parents had so much more gray in their hair now, and wrinkles had spread across their faces, carrying the marks of age.Looking at them, my nose stung. All these years, Claire had always used the development of Whitmore Group to guilt me into wor

I froze.I had always thought Claire was simply careless and did not realize how outrageous her behavior was.I never expected that she knew everything.Even though I had already given up on Claire, a chill still spread through my heart.I pulled my hand back in disgust.“Claire, I won’t forgive you. And you won’t get another chance.“Before this, I gave you a total of one hundred and one chances. You didn’t cherish a single one. The last chance disappeared the day you got married with Ryan.”I pulled my suitcase and walked around Claire toward the bus station.Panic flashed in Claire’s eyes. She lifted her foot to chase after me.“Nate, wait. I think we need to talk...”The next second, a groan came from behind us.I turned and saw Ryan crouching on the ground, clutching his stomach, his face twisted in pain.“Claire, I think my enteritis is acting up. My stomach hurts so much. Can you take me to the hospital?”This trick again. In the past, Ryan often pretended to be sick in front of

Ryan also grabbed my hand with fake concern.“Nathan, think this through. It’s not worth throwing away your future just because you’re angry.”But I knew exactly why Ryan was trying so hard to keep me.He simply could not bear to lose a useful tool like me.I pulled my hand away without a change in expression and was just about to fire back when my phone rang. When I answered, I accidentally turned on the speaker. The next second, my parents’ voices came through.“Son, when are you getting home? Your mom made your favorite pot roast, and she’s waiting for you!”“That’s right. I’ve already found you a date. She’s my best friend’s daughter, absolutely reliable!”Claire’s beautiful eyes widened. For a moment, she stood there stunned. “Nathan, you’re going back to Maple Creek?”Only when she came back to herself did she notice the suitcase behind me, and her heart seemed to miss a beat.“Why did you even pack a suitcase? You’re serious?“And what blind date? You already have me. Why would

“Nathan, do you know that forging a company seal is illegal?“But considering what we once had, as long as you get back together with me and return to work obediently, I can pretend the fake seal and fake resignation letter never happened. I can also let the past go. Otherwise, get ready for me to sue you.”Claire had always been like this. She trusted Ryan, a man she had known for less than a year, without question. She trusted him so much that she told him her phone password and every company secret, large and small.Yet she always judged me, her boyfriend of six years, with the worst possible assumptions.Every document I handed in, she practically wanted to inspect with a magnifying glass, afraid I was hiding some evil intention.I found it ridiculous.“Do whatever you want.”Seeing that neither soft words nor threats worked on me, Claire called HR in a fury.“HR, contact the lawyers right now. Nathan forged the company seal and faked his resignation. I’m suing him!”HR sounded con

  • The Hijacked Marriage   Chapter 8

All these years, because Claire said we would need a lot of money after getting married, I had handed over my paycheck to her on time every month and let her manage it as our wedding fund.I knew it was not easy for Claire to earn money, so I saved wherever I could. I kept using my toothbrush even after the bristles had frayed. I wore socks that cost 3.80 for two pairs, and even when holes appeared, I could not bring myself to throw them away. I patched them up and kept wearing them.In the end, all the money I had saved went to Ryan and his son.At first, I thought Claire simply spent a lot, so I did not take it to heart. But after the day Claire got married to Ryan, the more I thought about it, the more wrong it felt. I went straight to the bank and checked the detailed transaction records.Only then did I learn that more than half the money in the account had been spent by Claire on Ryan and Noah.A three-hundred-thousand-dollar watch. A million-dollar supercar. Toys that cost thous
