Lysandra’s POV
The backstage hallway of the arena smelled like stale ice and expensive champagne, and I kept twisting my wedding ring around my finger because my palms were sweating from the sheer excitement of the night. Atlas had just won the league championship, the crowd outside was still screaming his name, and I could hear the camera shutters clicking rapidly from the press room just down the corridor.
One of the team coordinators walked past me with a clipboard, and I smiled at him, stepping forward to ask, "Hey, Julian, do you know when Atlas is coming off the stage? I want to surprise him before the team head to the afterparty."
Julian stopped, blinking at me with a completely blank expression, and he looked down at his clipboard before looking back up at me, saying, "I'm sorry, who are you looking for?"
"Atlas," I said, laughing a little because I thought he was just exhausted from the game, "My husband, Julian. Did you lose your memory on the ice tonight or something?"
"The players are busy with the media right now, miss, so you need to step back into the waiting area," he replied, his voice entirely flat and formal, and he didn't even smile before he walked away, leaving me standing there alone by the concrete wall.
I frowned, thinking it was just the chaos of the championship win making everyone crazy, and I walked closer to the heavy double doors that led straight onto the media stage.
I cracked them open just an inch so I could watch him, and I saw Atlas standing at the center podium under the bright television lights, looking incredibly handsome in his team jersey with his dark hair damp from sweat, while reporters shoved microphones into his face.
"Atlas! Over here!" a reporter from the front row shouted, and when Atlas nodded at him, the man asked, "The rumors have been flying all season about your personal life, so now that you have the cup, are you ready to tell the world who the lucky woman is?"
I smiled, pressing my hand against my stomach, expecting him to finally announce my name to the world and call me out onto the stage, but Atlas just cleared his throat, leaned into the microphone, and said, "There is no mystery woman, I am completely single, and my only focus has been this team and this championship."
The entire room erupted into cheers, reporters started laughing and shouting more questions, and my heart stopped beating completely as I gripped the edge of the door.
I stared at his face on the giant monitor above the stage, waiting for him to break out into a grin and say he was joking, but his expression stayed totally serious, and he didn't even look toward the doors where he knew I was waiting.
Before I could even process the words, a beautiful woman in a designer dress walked right onto the stage from the opposite side, and the head coach stepped up to the microphone, smiling widely as he announced, "Actually, we have another big celebration tonight, because Atlas has recently become engaged to my daughter, Vivian Vance."
Vivian walked right up to Atlas, slipping her hand into his arm, and she looked up at him with a perfect, practiced smile while the camera flashes turned blindingly bright, and the reporters went absolutely wild, shouting their congratulations.
"Atlas, no," I whispered to myself, and I pushed the double doors wide open, stepping out into the backstage light because I knew this had to be some insane publicity stunt his manager had forced him into, or maybe I was having a literal nightmare.
I took three steps toward the stage, my eyes fixed on my husband, and I called out, "Atlas! What are you doing? Atlas, look at me!"
He didn't even turn his head, but two massive arena security guards immediately stepped into my path, blocking my view of the stage completely, and one of them grabbed my upper arm so tightly it bruised, while the other pushed my shoulder back toward the exit.
"Let go of me!" I yelled, struggling against their grip, and I pointed toward the stage, saying, "That is my husband! I am Atlas Devereux's wife, you know who I am, I was with him in the locker room before the game started!"
"Ma'am, you need to calm down and come with us right now," the first guard said, his voice loud and aggressive, and he started dragging me down the hallway toward the back exit doors while people turned to look at me, some of them pulling out their phones to record the scene.
"Julian! Tell them!" I screamed as we passed the coordinator again, but Julian just looked away, ignoring me completely as if I were a ghost, and the guards pushed open the heavy metal doors, shoving me out into the cold, empty alleyway behind the arena.
I stumbled on the pavement, nearly falling over, and I gripped the sleeve of the guard closest to me, crying openly now as I pleaded, "Please, just let me go back inside to talk to him, there is a huge mistake happening, I have my wedding ring right here, I am Mrs. Devereux."
The guard pulled his arm away from my grip, looking down at me with cold, empty eyes, and he locked the heavy metal door from the inside, but right before the latch clicked shut, he looked through the small glass window and said, "There has never been a Mrs. Devereux."
POV: AtlasI drove back from the downtown restaurant with my left hand resting on the steering wheel while my right palm throbbed under the tight white bandages, and after parking my car in the driveway of my house, I walked inside, tossed my keys onto the hall table, and sat down on the living room sofa to stare at the blank television screen.hadn't been sitting there for even ten minutes when the front door slammed shut with a loud bang, and Vivian marched straight into the living room, throwing her designer purse onto the armchair while her face was red with anger."Are you completely out of your mind, Atlas?" Vivian screamed, stepping right up to the coffee table and pointing her finger directly at my face, and she continued, "I just received three separate calls from news reporters asking why my fiancé left team meetings to go crush a water glass at a restaurant while sitting right next to that European tech woman and her husband!""I don't want to argue about this right no
POV: LysandraI pulled the cloth tight around his palm to secure the knot, keeping my head down so Atlas wouldn't see the tension in my face, and I made sure the bandage covered the deep cuts on his skin properly before I stepped back on the hallway floor to put some space between us."There, your hand is wrapped properly now, so you can stop bleeding all over the building and go back to your team," I said, keeping my voice completely level as I picked up the trash from the first aid kit to throw it away, and I added, "And I am telling you right now, Mr. Devereux, this is the last time you are ever going to cause a public scene around me or my family.""I didn't mean to break the glass, Lysandra," Atlas said, his low voice echoing against the quiet walls as he stood up slowly from the bench, holding his wrapped hand against his side, and he continued, "I came here because I wanted to talk to you like normal adults, but seeing you sitting at that table kissing another man made me
POV: AtlasI sat at the table right next to them while my chest felt like it was going to burst open from the anger running through my veins, and watching Lysandra press her lips so gently against Jason's cheek right in front of the whole restaurant caused something inside my chest to snap completely, my fingers tightened around the water glass in my hand without me even noticing what I was doing. Before I could even pull my eyes away from her face, the glass shattered right in my grip, sending small sharp pieces onto the table while blood immediately started pooling in the palm of my hand and dripping onto the white cloth. The entire dining room went completely silent as several restaurant guests gasped in shock, the head waiter came running over to my table with a stack of white napkins in his hands, saying in a panicked voice, "Mr. Devereux, you're bleeding very badly, please let me call our onsite medical manager or get an ambulance right now so someone can take a look at that
POV: LysandraI sat near the middle of the private dining room at the Grand Avenue restaurant, taking a small sip from my glass of water while Jason chatted comfortably with two of the senior league sponsors sitting across from us, I kept a relaxed smile on my face because I could see two local journalists sitting near the front entrance watching our table very carefully.Jason reached over to place his hand over mine on top of the white tablecloth, leaning in to whisper in my ear so the nearby reporters would notice, and he said, "The press is taking plenty of photos of us right now, Lysandra, this little strategy is working perfectly to erase those horrible home-wrecker headlines from this morning.""You are doing a great job playing the devoted partner, Jason, thank you for going along with this whole plan," I replied softly, offering him a genuine, warm smile as I patted his hand, I added, "Once this luncheon ends, we can head straight back to the hotel and spend the rest of t
POV: AtlasI sat on the bench in the arena locker room with a towel resting over my shoulders, fresh out of the morning ice practice, while my teammates were chatting loudly around me, but my eyes were fixed entirely on the small television screen mounted on the wall across from my locker. The entertainment news channel was showing live footage from the restaurant downtown, and the camera zoomed in close on Lysandra walking up the front steps on Jason's arm, wearing a dark blue dress that fit her perfectly, while she smiled softly up at him in front of a dozen reporters."Look at that European tech couple, man," my teammate Marcus said, sitting down on the bench next to me while he unlaced his skates, and he gestured toward the screen with his hand, adding, "The news tried to say she was chasing after you at the gala last night, but she looks completely crazy about her husband, so Vivian's public relations team clearly lied about the whole thing."I didn't answer Marcus, because
POV: LysandraI woke up early the next morning long before the sun was fully up, and after walking into the guest room to verify that Lysara was still sleeping peacefully in her bed, I stepped out into the hotel living room where the television was already turned on with the volume kept low.The morning news show host was standing in front of a giant screen that displayed a clear photo of me kneeling on the balcony with my hands on Atlas's face, and the woman presenter looked directly into the camera with a smug smile, saying, "Local sports media is buzzing today after last night's charity gala, where European tech executive Lysandra Villeneuve was spotted getting extremely cozy with hockey captain Atlas Devereux right under his fiancée's nose.""That's right, Sarah, and multiple witnesses claim Miss Villeneuve deliberately cornered Atlas on the terrace and used his sudden breathing spell to make a move on him," the male co-host added, leaning across the desk while he gestured tow
