MALACHAR

THREE WEEKS LATER…

The defenseman wanted me gone.

I twisted with the puck in my possession, then tossed it back to Sky, who I could smell behind me at exactly ten feet.

Afterwards, I stickhandled past the defenseman. He wasn’t quick enough to notice the puck already back in my possession.

“How—what the fuck, cap?” Ryan Walter ripped off his helmet as soon as I scored. “Coach!”

“Stetson isn’t here to baby your ass. Grow up,” Sky, the left wing, told him, chuckling while following me.

Saturday was scrimmage and we’d been at it for almost two hours. I didn’t need practice to understand human gameplay, but Coach Stetson had left me in charge of the team today. He had business to take care of.

“That was impossible,” Ryan said.

I stopped and turned. The rest of the team had gathered around us.

“What the hell are you chirping about?” Sky pushed at Ryan’s chest, keeping him from me.

“Malachar knows what I’m talking about,” Ryan insisted.

I could snap this human in two in barely a second or flatten him until he was permanently melded with the rink’s ice.

He tried to advance again despite Sky in his way, adamant that I was using steroids. He was a fool.

But we couldn’t afford to have our best defense benched this season because of a few broken bones.

“Shoot drills. From the top!” I yelled with startling authority and the gathering around us dispersed. “Including you, Walter.”

The team grumbled, but after Stetson, my word as captain was law. They respected me. For the two years I had been enrolled in Richmond High, LA, as a transfer student, this rink and my teammates were my family.

Although I was nothing more than an eighteen-year-old high school senior at the moment, the only position I could ever hold was one of power. I was born to rule, raised to rule, and have ruled longer than should be possible.

In the school’s locker room, I undressed before the mirror and touched my left smile line that seemed to have become more defined. These past few weeks unusual things have been happening to me. I looked… older.

I tried to stop it, but whenever I thought about weeks ago, I thought about her. Her lips. Her body. Her nude painted nails spreading over my tattooed chest, trailing lower and lower…

I grunted and shivered at the memory, my blood rushing south quickly.

The only time I had ever forfeited power was at Cliffview lodge’s dining room.

“Fuck, man!” A teammate walked in and tossed his sweaty jersey at me, covering his eyes. “Go get a cold shower or get fucking laid!”

I was hard.

Perpetually it seemed, but only when I thought about her, which was every minute.

And now I couldn’t fuck. The sight of other women irritated me.

I didn’t follow her after she found my ID on the floor and got the wrong idea about my age. I believed the hunger would fade. That she was just one amongst the city of women I had given a good time.

“And get your ass to drills, Atlas,” I yelled back, a bit jaded as I entered one of the stalls.

My third cold shower in one morning.

I was losing my shit, but more importantly, I couldn’t go after her now, seeing how much she affected me. I’d have to make sure we never cross paths again.

After ensuring our kits were intact and stored properly, I shut down the rink once everyone else had left. Coach Stetson texted, said he wanted to discuss a lucrative deal with me. Something about bringing my name to big screens like N*****x and delivering me on a platter to NHL scouts. When I came to Richmond, I had no desire for fame. I started playing hockey because I enjoyed it. It was a good pastime, but there was no future for me in the sport. Once I completed the important task I came to this city to do, my pack and I would return to hiding from the rest of the world.

I was going to meet up with Stetson at Sandy’s, which was our team’s favorite bar. And I could use a few beers. But whatever this deal was, I had no intention of accepting it.

I grabbed the door handle of my Porsche, then I paused.

I looked over my shoulder by a fraction. Eryx Blackwood was approaching just as I sensed. He was Sky’s father and a high-ranked wolf in our secret pack.

“I have news.”

“That couldn’t wait?” I opened my car door.

“The Trydon pack is celebrating their Alpha’s wedding today.”

“Motherfucker!” I spat, turning around. “I should know everything he’s doing. Not finding out like this!”

“I’m sorry I failed you, Alpha Malachar, but… but that’s not all…”

Eryx lowered his head. “What else is there?!” I growled in his face, seeing red.

The Trydon pack used to be my home. Then tragedy struck. I was cursed by the moon goddess and cast out, abandoned by the ones I called family.

After that, I went into hiding, but two years ago, I had reason to believe Trydon wolves were stealing the moon’s power. It was like a fast-spreading rot. Many werewolves started defecting to the Trydon pack because of the promise of this supreme power. But they were also turning feral and dying.

I came back because the moon goddess didn’t just curse me, she tasked me with guarding the moon’s power and keeping her wolves in check. In other words, I was bound by duty to not let tragedy strike again.

“I met with a witch seer—“ He blurted and then cut off my reprimand. “No! I didn’t want to come to you with half answers when we’re running out of time.”

“Witches are forbidden.”

“It will never happen again, I swear. But hear me out. The old woman told me Alpha Jason’s mate is not ordinary.”

“What do you mean not ordinary?”

“She’s an omega… with powerful healer magic.”

My brows furrowed. In all my years, I had seen great feats accomplished by healers. On the other hand, omegas were weak and unspecial, always at the bottom of the chain. It was fucking ridiculous to call one powerful.

But if this was true, then Jason intended to find a way to draw power from the moon without side effects through this mate of his.

A way to stop wolves from turning feral and dying after stealing moon power.

I clasped his shoulder hard and leaned in icily. “I want that healer’s head.”

MALACHAR I ended up at Richmond High. One afternoon months ago, Coach forgot the key with me. I had it duplicated before returning it, and ever since, I would come here past school hours to clear my head. I parked the motorcycle and jumped over the fence, sneaking into the hockey rink. I suited up in the locker room and flipped only the switch of the main area afterwards. Light poured down on the ice. I stayed put by the entrance, taking it all in. When I moved to LA under this disguise two years ago, I was numb. But for the first time in a long while, I was thinking about my future and getting excited. I didn’t have to move my pack around anymore. I didn’t have to hide from the world, or use a different name every couple of years. I could be whatever I wanted to be. And I already had an idea of that. I skated onto the ice and stopped at the centre, knees bent, hands clasped around the end of my stick. At the back of my mind, I heard people scream my name. I imagined

RAE TRIGGER WARNING (THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS SCENES OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE) “Please, Jason. Please. Don’t do this!” Jason yanked my hair back and it drove the glass shards deeper into my scalp. A silver leash clasped around my neck. It seared my skin like fire. I cried out as my dormant omega wolf slowly withered. There was no one else here. I had escaped a feral wolf, only to fall right into the hands of the real monster. My own husband. Jason brought down the chains hanging from the ceiling of the small, dimly-lit room in the basement he had dragged me into. He hauled my hands above my head and bound me there. “Please.” I begged, crying and sweating. “I’m sorry that I wronged you—“ He cupped my chin hard, almost crushing my jaw. “You can’t begin to imagine how much you’ve wronged me, you worthless piece of nothing!” He spat, and tossed my head back, letting go of me. It was probably this leash that had saved my neck from snapping now. Jason grabb

RAE I had been mentally fist-pumping the air since my mate kissed me under the stars. It was perfect. I knew who I wanted now and I could finally put everyone who didn’t believe that someone could love me to shame. Though my sins were plenty. I had done a lot of terrible things to him and I didn’t even know where to start to confess them. I would eventually. But maybe this run-in with death was my karma for trying to covet father and son. The cops surrounded the scene and a tow truck was hauling away the ruined vehicles. After giving our statements and getting tested for DUI, the paramedics dressed my wounds in the back of their ambulance. They advised me to get my head injury checked out at a hospital to rule out a concussion. Jason cut in then. Our ride was here. He assured the paramedic nurse that I would be properly taken care of. He was my husband and legally my next of kin so none of them protested letting me go. Besides, the chances of me getting a con

MALACHAR It took everything in me not to tie up my father’s wife and bind her to my bed for an eternity. Where she would exist just for my pleasure and no other man would so much as look at her again. If I had my way, Rachel would be only mine. MINE. I blinked and reality set in. I tore my gaze away from the door, turning around. Sky had been studying me since he walked in on Rachel and I. I bet he had a truckload of opinions to give, but the issue was that I didn’t give a shit. “Next time, fucking knock.” Sky just shook his head, narrowing his gaze. I raised a brow and the silence in the lounge stretched thin. “So this was why you did it?” He said, but it was more to himself. “Why I did what?” I sat down and resumed drinking solo. “If you’ve got nothing else to say, leave. I want to be alone.” “You convinced my father and your entire council that it was wise to hold off killing Rachel Kane until the next blood moon. It’s one thing for you to think about stalling for a

RAE I used to think I was an unlucky person. That nothing ever went my way. But an otherworldly force had been indeed looking after me. My phone’s screen lit up with Jason’s name. I exhaled sharply, my finger trembling as I tapped the answer button. “Hello,” I whispered behind my palm, eyes glued to the rearview mirror. “Jason. Help. I… I’m being kidnapped.” The creature driving me shrieked again and I jolted. My phone slipped out of my hands, tumbling underneath the driver’s seat. I screwed my eyes shut and a tear slid past my closed lids. Fuck. Jason was still on the line, shouting my name. I figured whatever had kidnapped me didn’t have the ability to hear because when I peeked at it, it was still focused on the road ahead, driving like nothing happened. As I forced myself to take in its amber eyes and fangs, my head tilted in shock. This thing was a werewolf. But it was also death in the flesh. As if there was no soul in that body. When I stopped h

RAE Gods, just a little more. But he removed his finger before I could cum. And I was so frustrated a tear escaped my closed eyelids. I hadn’t even been able to get off on my own. Why couldn’t he just finish what he already started? I opened my eyes. Malachar was sucking me off his finger. I glimpsed the smile creeping onto his face while I just stood there, gulping air like it was my first time breathing. Words would never be able to describe how mortified I was now. I had let it happen again. My fingers shakily tucked the strands of my hair that had left my bun behind my ear. How was I supposed to fix this? I felt so slick in between my legs. The ache, the sensations he had stirred up with his fingers. I clenched my thighs and a bolt of pleasure shot through me. Fuck, I shouldn’t have done that. I bit my bottom lip to hold back a groan. Any more friction would make me combust. “What happened between us was a mistake—“ He came at me again and I backe
