Chapter 3

Auteur: Vera
Six hours later, I found Theodore in the dream with a backpack at his feet.

He was colder than usual tonight.

“Let's get started. Don't waste these two hours.”

I warmed up the way he'd taught me, then started on split squats.

The moment I tried to take a break, he handed me two dumbbells.

“Freya, I don't have time to watch you slack off.”

Fine. I'll work out!

I kept going until I couldn't take it anymore and needed another break.

Suddenly, he stepped closer, wrapped his large hands around mine, and practically forced me through several more sets of exercises.

Is he in a hurry or something?

But I need a break! I plopped down on the floor and looked up at him.

“Theodore, what's with the attitude?”

He stared at me.

“Don't you have something to explain to me?”

My eyes went wide. “Explain what? I didn't beg you to come into this dream. You barged in all on your own.”

As for why he's the one in my dream, it probably has something to do with my second wish.

But I'm definitely not telling him that right now.

Theodore took a deep breath, trying to hold back his irritation.

He was the team's star player, the one most likely to make it to the NHL. He'd never had to go out of his way for a woman.

So why was one girl getting under his skin like this?

His voice was cold and firm. “I don't think you need to work on getting a peach butt.”

That made me mad.

“Enough. That's my business.”

Theodore remembered what he'd overheard earlier, and his anger flared.

“Listen, Freya. Your body is already perfect. You don't need to change yourself just to please some guy!”

“Who said I was doing it for a guy?”

Theodore went stiff.

“What do you mean?”

Since he'd just complimented me, I decided to be honest with him.

“I hate being treated like a nerd. I want top grades in my major and a great body. I'm going to put trash like Amanda in her place.”

His expression shifted.

“So it's not for Isaac?”

“What does he have to do with anything?”

Theodore suddenly felt like a complete idiot. His expression tightened as he grabbed the backpack with one hand and shoved it into my arms.

“What's this?”

“Open it.”

The backpack was stuffed to bursting: a set of women's workout clothes, a water bottle, a quick-drying towel, resistance bands... and a sports bra.

“How do you know my size?”

Theodore raised an eyebrow.

“As your personal trainer, it's my job to know your body.”

Um... why does that sound so weird?

Theodore rolled out a yoga mat.

“Starting today, we're adding a few new exercises. Loop the band above your knees. I'm going to teach you clamshells.”

He coached me carefully, even adjusting the angle of my bent legs.

“Does the hockey team do this kind of training too?”

“Of course not.”

“So you learned it just for me?”

It suddenly hit me that Theodore wasn't arrogant at all.

Quite the opposite. Beneath his rough exterior, he was surprisingly thoughtful.

Theodore's hand suddenly settled on my back, his palm burning hot.

“Try to keep your back and hips in a straight line.”

As he adjusted my position, I realized he was closer than usual. His nostrils flared, as if he were trying to catch a scent. What is he smelling?

With him so close, I suddenly became aware of something I'd never really thought about before.

Theodore was a grown man, tall and muscular.

The silent room kept growing hotter. Then someone shouted, “Freya! Open the door, Freya!”

The pounding on the door jolted me awake. Theodore's expression changed abruptly before his face disappeared from view.

The two hours were already up.

And outside, Isaac was still yelling.

When the new semester started, Theodore made sure we became the most talked-about couple on campus.During the off-season, he came to class with me.He'd plastered pictures of me all over his social media, and most of his rabid fan club had drifted away.I told him he was nothing like the cold, untouchable “Ice Prince” everyone talked about. He was clearly pleased.“I've made sure everyone knows I'm taken. That way, nobody will dare try to break us up.”He pulled me against him with one arm, sounding jealous. “What about you? Everyone knows we're together, so why do guys still throw themselves at you?”I explained patiently, “Those are just classmates being friendly. That guy today, for example, just wanted help with a problem set.”Theodore raised an eyebrow.“If he was there to study, why wasn't he looking at the problems? Why was he staring at you the whole time?”He held me even tighter.“Freya, keep your eyes on me. No one else.”The next day, he showed up with a workbook.“Freya,

When I arrived at the victory party, I could feel eyes on me.No one was leering at me. Their looks were admiring but respectful.I wore the little cocktail dress I'd carefully chosen, one that showed off the body I'd worked so hard for.Tonight, I wanted to dress up.To celebrate surviving finals week. And to catch a certain someone's eye.“Freya!”Theodore's voice came from behind me. When I turned, his eyes widened in open admiration. One of his teammates clapped him on the shoulder.“That's her, right? The sweetheart who gave you the dreamcatcher?”Then he turned to me and said warmly, “You have no idea how grateful the whole team is to you. Ever since Theodore started carrying your dreamcatcher around, his rotten temper's gotten way better.”Theodore kicked his loudmouthed teammate out of the way.He straightened his bow tie and stopped in front of me.His heated gaze swept over my face, my collarbone, and...“Long time no see.”I said it to stop him from checking me out like that

After the Wish Room closed, Theodore and I didn't see each other for a week.I was swamped with finals, and he was busy preparing for the last game of the season. Our last conversation had ended with this message from him.“Freya, I'm so glad I'm the hottest guy on campus in your eyes.”He's so full of himself! I decided to leave him hanging for a while.Besides studying hard for my exams, I'd gotten into the habit of working out every day.I had to admit, all that exercise had made me a lot stronger. When finals were over, I ranked first in my major. My professor said, “Freya, I've always believed in you. And now you shine brighter than ever.”I knew why.I couldn't help thinking of Theodore, who was far away at his game. He was the one who'd helped me become more confident and courageous.Because of my grades, Isaac's mom chewed him out until he was too ashamed to hold his head up.Isaac couldn't let it go, so he and Amanda cornered me, only for a passing professor to scold them for

Seeing my dreamcatcher hanging over his bed felt unreal. Then my phone rang, and I frowned. It was Isaac. Theodore saw the name on the screen, and his smile disappeared.“Your little childhood buddy sure is clingy.”Since when is he so snide? And what does that lunatic Isaac want now? When I picked up, Isaac's loud voice filled the room. “Freya, you actually know Theodore? How is that even possible?”“That's between Theodore and me. You don't need to know.”“But you like me. Didn't you come to the game to see me?”I watched Theodore. He had his back to me, digging through a cabinet for something, but I had a feeling he was listening to every word.Isaac was still yapping on the other end.Fed up, I cut him off. “Enough, Isaac. I never liked you. Knock it off and stay out of my life.”“Then what about Theodore? Do you like him?”I stared at Theodore's back.“No question. He's a lot easier to like than you are.”Wait. What did I just say? When did I start thinking of Theodore like that?

After that day, we got more and more in sync in the dream room.Theodore even invited me to come watch one of his hockey games. When I sat down in the front row, I could hear his fangirls screaming behind me.“Look at him. Theodore is pure testosterone. I'm getting hot just watching him!”“Remember last time, in the second period? The moment Theodore hit the ice, he tied the game for his team. The way he took over that game was so hot! That was the night he showed up in my dream, breathing hard all night long!“If only that dream were real! I wonder who'll be lucky enough to have Theodore all to herself someday. With a body like his, I'm already jealous of her!”By the end of the game, my face was on fire, and I couldn't get the image of Theodore tearing across the ice out of my head. This is what Theodore's fangirls are like? They're so... bold. So explicit.“What are you doing here?”Amanda was standing in front of me, frowning, her arm hooked through Isaac's.“Did you find out Isaac

Back in the dream room, I watched Theodore in the wall-to-wall mirror. He had the same dark circles under his eyes that I did. What's going on? I stayed up on purpose, but did he have trouble sleeping too? This can't go on.I hated letting stupid feelings mess with my studies, and I didn't want to screw up his life either. Now that I knew Theodore was actually a good guy, I felt even worse about dragging him down.I spoke up first. “Theodore, what if I found a personal trainer?”“What?” His gaze snapped to me.What is happening? Is the room getting colder?I explained with a smile, “You know, a real-life trainer. That way, you won't have to work so hard training me.”He didn't answer. He was probably thinking it over.I studied myself in the mirror. My curves were already taking on that peach shape, but I had no idea what the wish system counted as reaching the goal.It wasn't just one area, either. My whole body was becoming more defined. It was an amazing surprise. Working hard for a
