The Conversation My Father Never Finished

Noah's POV

My father had warned me this day would come, but I just never believed it would happen like this.

The voice outside the apartment door was too calm, and too patient. As if the man had all the time in the world.

"Noah Knight...open the door."

Liam looked from me to the entrance.

"You know him." It wasn't a question. But I kept my eyes on the door.

"I know the voice."

"Who is it?"

"I don't know if it's really him."

Another knock, not loud but j

The Fire EscapeLiam's POV"They're lying."Noah's voice was quiet, but there wasn't a trace of hesitation in it.Another hard bang rattled my apartment door."Liam Cole!"The man outside sounded impatient now."Open the door!" I looked toward the entrance, then back at Noah."If they really have a warrant—""They don't.""How can you be so sure?""Because a real warrant isn't announced like that." He was already crossing my apartment. Not toward the front door. Toward the kitchen. I followed him."What are you doing?"Instead of answering, he unlocked the window above the sink and pushed it open. Cold night air rushed inside.Beyond it was the narrow metal fire escape bolted to the side of the building.I stared at him."You've got to be kidding.""I wish I was.""We're climbing down four floors?""We're climbing across first.""Across?"He pointed toward the neighboring building. The gap between the two fire escapes couldn't have been more than four feet, but four floors below us wa

"Liam," I whispered low."Lock the deadbolt."But he hesitated, and asked. "Why?""Just do it."Something in my tone must have convinced him, he crossed the room and slid the deadbolt into place. And the metallic click hit through the apartment. The man outside chuckled. "Still cautious."His voice carried through the wood as though he were standing beside us."That's good."Liam sighed. "Who are you?" There was a brief silence, and then—"Someone tryin

Three KnocksNoah's POVBut the ringing wouldn't stop.Liam looked at his phone, again.I looked at mine. It's Coach Derrick in his, and Private Number, in mine. But neither of us answered. For three long seconds, the apartment was filled with nothing but the vibration of two phones and the pounding of my heart."Answer yours," Liam said."You answer yours, first.""Why?""Because if Derrick is calling now, it's not a coincidence."Liam glanced at the screen again before finally accepting the call.I watched his face carefully notice. "Coach?"A pause, from the other end."Yeah... I'm home."Another pause. His eyebrows pulled together."What package?"The muscles in my shoulders tightened. So Derrick knew. But how?Liam looked at the wooden box sitting on the coffee table. "No... I haven't received anything."He was lying. Good, very good.Another silence. "I understand."He ended the call and looked at me."He asked if anyone had contacted me tonight.""What exactly did he say?""He

Three KnocksLiam's POVThree slow knocks. The sound echoed through my apartment like a countdown.Noah reacted before I did. His hand shot out, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me two steps away from the door."Don't answer it."His voice was barely above a whisper. I frowned and pulled my arm free. "You don't get to order me around.""I'm dead serious.""So am I too."Another three knocks, steady and patient, this time. Whoever stood outside wasn't trying to force their way in, but they were waiting for me to make the choice.I looked through the peephole, the hallway was empty, again. My chest started hitting fast again."No one's there."Noah didn't move. "They know you'll look first.""What?""They're standing where the peephole can't see them."I turned to look at him. "How would you know that?"His mood didn't change. "I've seen it before." That answer only raised more questions.I slowly unlocked the deadbolt."Liam.""If nobody's there, I'm opening it.""You'll regret it."I igno

Behind the DoorLiam's POVNoah's eyes never left the envelope in my hand. For a second, neither of us found a word to say, and even the hallway was silent except for our breathing. He took one slow step towards me."Where did you get that?" I asked. His voice was calm, too calm. I looked down at the envelope. "I found it taped to my door." I said. His jaw tightened. "Who gave it to you?" He asked me. "I don't know." I replied. "Liam?" He called my name, looking surprised. "I'm telling you the truth."He searched my face as if trying to decide whether I was lying, and then his eyes shifted past me, into my apartment. "Has anyone been here?" He asked. The question came so quickly that I didn't answer immediately. But his face changed, not to surprise but to frustration. Someone had been. "You knew?" I asked. His eyes snapped back to mine. "Knew what?" He asked. "That somebody was coming, I suspected.""No." I shook my head. "You knew?" The words hung between us. He rubbed the back of h

Behind the DoorLiam's POVThe man standing in my apartment smiled like we had met before, but I had never seen him in my life, and he looked to be in his late fifties, dressed in a charcoal overcoat despite the warmth outside. His hair was neatly combed, and a pair of thin glasses rested low on his nose. There was nothing threatening about him, that was what made him terrifying. People who meant trouble usually looked the part. This man looked like someone's favorite professor. "I apologize for the late visit," he said politely. "May I come in?" He asked.I frowned. "You're already inside." I muttered, shaking with fear.He glanced around my apartment before giving me an apologetic smile. "Fair point." He acknowledged. My grip tightened around the hockey stick hidden beside my leg. "I asked a simple question," I said. "Who are you?"He ignored it, but instead, his eyes drifted to the brown envelope lying on my kitchen table. "So...you opened the file?" He asked and every muscle in my
