登入Chapter 5
Kellan I left her place later than I meant to. The apartment felt smaller with her in it, all soft curves and that stubborn look she got when she was hurting but refused to say it out loud. The drive home took twenty minutes. I thought about the way she had looked at me when I said she had to come. She was tired, but she still fought me, and that stubborn set of her mouth stayed in my head. My place sat on the broader edge of town, the part where the houses mixed with a few human families. It was not the fancy side, and it was not near the royal palace either. That place was a few miles farther in, all stone and guards and the kind of silence that made my skin crawl. Most of the younger wolves lived out here in town because it was cheaper and louder and easier to breathe. I parked, went inside, and dropped my keys on the counter. The arm still ached from the last fight, but I ignored it. I pulled out my phone and ordered the dress. It was green and made of soft fabric, something that would sit right on her hips and show what Ryder had been too blind to want. I did not expect her to wear it, and I did not even expect her to show up. But if she did, I was going to make sure every single person in that rink knew she was with me now. I paid for the order, set the phone down, and stood in the kitchen for a long time while the quiet of the house pressed in around me. I slept like shit because every time I closed my eyes I saw her face again. I woke up early, drove to the training grounds, and got into the locker room with the rest of the team. The match was the usual setup. It was hockey style but harder, and it was only for the strong kids. Alphas’ sons, betas with real power, and the royalty brats who thought the ice belonged to them filled the two teams. I was on one side and Ryder was on the other. We had not been on the same side in years because we did not like each other enough for that. I was tired, but I knew I had to focus. The locker room was loud with people talking, laughing, and throwing gear around. Someone turned on music, and another guy started singing badly just to annoy everyone else. A helmet flew across the room, and somebody shouted for them to stop acting like children. I sat on the bench and slowly laced my skates. My hands were moving, but my mind was somewhere else. I kept thinking about her. I wondered if she had slept at all. I wondered if she was still upset. I wondered if she had changed her mind about coming today. Across the room, Ryder laughed at something one of his friends said. His voice made me look up for a second. He looked relaxed like he did not have a care in the world. That only made me more annoyed. He caught me looking and smirked before turning away. I looked back down and finished tying my skates. The room slowly became quieter as everyone got ready. Players stretched, checked their sticks, and talked about today’s match. A few of them were already making bets on which team would win. Others were arguing about who would score first. It was the same thing every week. We hit the ice for warmups while the stands were already filling. Pack members, some ranking wolves, and a few elders who liked to pretend they still ran things took their seats. I skated a few laps and tested the arm. It held, but only barely. Ryder was across the rink with his team, and he was talking to Solia who sat in the VIP section like she owned it simply because she was the Luna to be. She caught my eye and gave me that little smile she used to give when we were still together. I looked away because whatever had been between us was finished a long time ago. The whistle blew for the start, and we lined up. The puck dropped, and the first period turned into the usual mess of checks and sticks and growling. I scored once, and Ryder answered soon after. He hit harder than he needed to every time he got near me, so I hit back just as hard. The crowd liked it. They always did when the two of us went at each other. Halfway through the second period I was skating back to the bench for a line change when I saw her. She walked in wearing the green dress, and I almost missed the boards. The fabric sat on her the way I knew it would. It was soft and fitted enough that every curve showed hips, waist, and the full shape of her that Ryder had laughed at in front of everyone. She kept her head up even though I could see the way her hands twisted the little bag she carried. She looked around once, found the VIP section, and started that way. My wolf slammed against my ribs so hard I had to lock my jaw to keep from shifting right there on the ice. He was possessive and hungry and ready to rip into anyone who looked at her wrong. I forced a breath through my nose and skated over to the boards before I did something that would get me benched. She reached the barrier about the same time I did. Up close the dress looked even better. The color made her skin warmer, and her hair was down. She smelled like herself under the nerves. “You came,” I said. My voice came out like whisper.Chapter 55SophiaRyder did not ask permission before he pulled his phone out and hit call. He set it down flat on the counter between the three of us and put it on speaker, and the sound of it ringing filled the whole kitchen while none of us breathed right. It picked up on the fourth ring. “Ryder? Hey, sorry, I was resting, what’s wrong?”Her voice was steady. Too steady for someone who had supposedly been in a car wreck a few hours earlier. There was no beeping in the background, no hum of hospital fluorescents, no nurse calling a name over an intercom, just quiet, the kind of quiet you only get at home with the television off and nobody moving around.“Where are you right now,” Ryder said. He kept his eyes on me while he said it, not on the phone, like he already knew what he was about to hear and wanted a witness standing there when it landed.“Home. Why, what’s going on, you sound weird.”“You’re not at the pack clinic.”A pause. Small, but I caught it, and I could tell Ryder ca
Chapter 54 Ryder Harland set the gauze down on the counter and did not pick anything else up after that. He had been checking the marks for almost ten minutes, way longer than checking a few dark lines under someone’s jaw should ever take, and both of us knew it, and neither of us said a word about it because saying something out loud would have made it real in a way neither of us was ready for at one in the morning with Kellan gone and the house sitting too quiet around us.“You should sit,” he said. “You’re still shaking a little.”“I’m not shaking.”“You are. Just not where you can see it.”I sat anyway because my legs agreed with him even if my mouth did not want to admit defeat that easily. He crouched down in front of me the way he always did, slow and careful, like my body was something he needed to read line by line instead of a person standing right in front of him, except his hands had stopped being careful somewhere in the last twenty minutes and neither of us had bothere
Chapter 53 Ryder I got home and Solia was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed with her knees pulled up and her phone in her hand like she had been staring at it for an hour instead of actually looking at anything on the screen. She heard me come in and she did not turn around right away. That was the first sign something was wrong. Solia always turned around. She always had something to say the second I walked through a door, some complaint about the pack or something one of the elders said or some story about her day that she needed to get out before she could breathe right. Tonight she just sat there.“You’re up late,” I said.“Couldn’t sleep.”I dropped my keys on the dresser and pulled my shirt over my head. My ribs still ached from the airport. Kellan had cracked something and it had not finished healing all the way, and every time I twisted wrong it reminded me exactly whose fist had done it. I sat on the other side of the bed and started working my boots off.“Where
Chapter 52Kellan POVThe car smelled like my woman.I do not know how that was possible. Sophia. But I could smell her anyway. Roses. Something sweet underneath. It was in my head. It was in my skin. It was everywhere.I gripped the wheel and drove. The motel was behind me now. Solia was behind me now. But her words were not. They kept playing in my head like a song I could not turn off.Little does he know what I am planning. What was she planning? What else could she possibly do? She had already sent Elina. She had already created chaos. She had already made me walk out on the only person who mattered.I pressed the gas harder. The road was dark. Empty. Just like I felt.I thought about Sophia's face when I left. The way she looked at me. Not with anger. Not with hate. With something worse. Disappointment. Like she had expected me to leave. Like she had known I would. That was the worst part. She had known. She had known I would choose Solia. She had known I would walk out. She had
Chapter 51 Sophia I stood in the sitting room with my arms crossed. Kellan was on the couch. Harland was by the window. Nobody had spoken for five minutes. "So let me get this straight," Harland said. "You told a royal's daughter to leave. You told her Kellan would take responsibility. And then you just let her walk out?" "Yes," I said. "That's insane." "I know." Kellan rubbed his face. "Sophia, I don't understand what you're doing. Elina is dangerous. Her father has connections. If she goes back to court and tells them I refused to acknowledge…" "She won't, dont be a coward" I said. "How do you know that? I'm an Alpha to be in case you don't know " "Because she's lying! And yes i Alpha who is the second son!" Kellan stared at me. "What?" I walked to the table and sat down. I kept my voice calm. "I've been thinking about this since she walked in. The timeline doesn't make sense. That means conception happened around the time you were still in London." Kellan's jaw tighte
Chapter 50Sophia The knock came again before either of us had time to pretend the last hour had not happened. Kellan was already off the bed, dragging his shirt over his head, shoving his arms through the sleeves like the fabric could put the room back together. Petals stuck to his knees. A diamond clicked against the floor when his heel caught it. He did not look at me when he went for the door. He looked like a man who already knew the night was about to get worse and still opened it anyway.I heard the kiss before I saw it.Not a greeting. A mouth on his mouth, fast and sure, and then a woman’s laugh right up against his face. She pulled him back by the front of his shirt like she had done it before. I sat up with the sheet still around me and watched his whole body go stiff in the doorway.“Miss me?” she said.“What are you doing here.”“Looking for you. You left London and vanished. Do you know how many clubs I walked through before someone said you were staying in her house.”
