Valerie’s POV

Three Hours Earlier.

“I can't be pregnant… No.” I’m freaking out.

“I wish so too.” Dr. Glynn’s voice is dead flat.

My body goes still as I watch him walk down to the bedside table.

“Pregnancy is a burden especially when it’s for a loser like him.” He sucks his teeth.

Oddly, he crushes against my space, so close that I can feel his breath on my skin. Only now did I notice his cool brown eyes, sharp cheekbones, dominant features…

I gulp dryly, feeling terrified. My uneven breathing makes him pause. We are barely an inch apart, with his hand twisting my curls around his fingers.

“Don’t be scared, it's just me.” He pulls upright.

For a moment, my breathing is labored. I pause to get stability, my hand presses to my beating heart.

“You seem-you seem to know so much.” I stop to swallow.

“And you act like you’ve forgotten so soon.” His tone is hurt. “I woke up to the news of your death and the loser taking over your company… I should have known it was his nasty scheme!”

He cackles like he’s high on his thoughts, then pulls forward, taking my hand in his, eyes on my belly. When his eyes meet mine, they are possessive.

“Veronica, this should be me and you… us.” He strokes my hand. “We’ll make a power couple, take over the world. You and I.”

My lips part in protest but no words form.

“I'm Valerie.” I manage to mumble.

His hands feel rigid against mine, just as his eyes squint. “The baby sister?” As if stunned, he smiles and gently lets go. “You both have such an uncanny resemblance.”

Silence settles in between us. While I try to process all that he said, he goes on about his job.

“Good thing you're ready for discharge.” He breaks the silence. “I’ll have a nurse attend to you.”

“Wait!” The word slips out of me. It makes him pause by the door. I adjust forward. “Do you know how my sister's last days were? She died in this hospital.”

He masks his shock with an awkward grin. “No.” He bluntly admits. “I apologize for opening old wounds.” He disappears with that.

Things don't seem to add up. If he thinks that my sister's death was a publicity stunt, then maybe there are more skeletons.

As promised, a nurse shows up to complete the process of my discharge. Instead of simply leaving, I walk down the hallway, reading every title on the door. My intention for coming here was to demand Veronica’s medical record, but Dr. Glynn is a better catch.

“Hi,” I stop an orderly. “I'm Dr. Glynn’s patient.” It makes her relax.

“He’s outsid…”

“Wondering when he closes from work.” I cut her off. I can't risk being seen. “Just for a kind gesture.”

“7 PM. In about an hour.” She does the math and flashes a smile before leaving.

Pressing my ears to each door, the last one before the bend seems silent. Thankfully, it's not locked. It's their linen room. There’s a dark place in the room, like a small corridor. I press myself into it.

Steady footsteps grow louder. The door opens and someone walks in.

I push in, trying to go undetected as much as possible. Suddenly the footsteps stop. My heart begins to pound loudly. I shut my eyes, feeling the presence grow stronger. I’m quite scared.

Slowly, I open my eyes. Black crocs, down to the start of navy-green pants, like the orderly’s uniform. I look upward, meeting cool blue eyes…

Baron!?

Before I can scream, he jerks me into his arms and covers my mouth with a napkin.

Valerie’s POV“I have millions in my trust fund?” I mop, barely audible. I scoff, trying to make sense of it. “I'm a multi-millionaire?”Mr. Torres just grins from ear to ear, he’s holding his copy of the will.“Congratulations.” He mumbles for the umpteenth time. “How?”I stammer. Even though the evidence is staring right in my face, I find it hard to digest. The document on my lap shows everything, still, it's hard.Baron leans in and rubs my shoulders and strokes down to my back. Veronica on the other hand is perched beside me, happy. Her eyes scan the papers and she gasps nonstop. I know that look. That confirmation of ‘we’re rich’ look. Screw that, ‘we’re super rich!’ Made, even. But I focus on the lawyer, needing him to spill everything.“Before your father died,” Mr. Torres starts as if he knows my demand. “He had the money invested in shares of a new energy company.” We give him all our attention. “At that time, it was all he had. He didn't have much as the company was plu

Valerie’s POVI ignore the blank stare of our family lawyer and run into the house like a lunatic. It's either this or I puke all over and make a mess of myself. Too confused to focus, I bump into a hard mass.Baron."Babe," he tries to reach for me.I hum and run upstairs, not waiting for a second. He runs after me, like a savior. Once I get into our bedroom, I race for the bathroom and throw up in the sink. "Easy," Baron murmurs as he continues to rub my back with one hand while the other holds up my hair in a bunch. "I'm sorry." He pats me and helps me clean up. Tired, I lean into him, finding solace in my most comfortable place in the world. *********All four of us sit, silent, waiting for the lawyer to speak the first word. My toes subconsciously tap on the floor, showing how anxious I am about this long-anticipated meeting. Veronica had changed her dress because of the perfume. She said she doesn't mind, but I feel terrible for inconveniencing her. Baron on the other hand

Valerie’s POV‘Notice of an important legal meeting scheduled for tomorrow, 10 AM prompt. You’re mandated to be present.- Mr. Jethro Torres, the legal representative of the Late Morphy Smith’s family.’ Staring at it for so long, it seems more serious than I had imagined. He had never been this serious, not even when our late dad’s will was read. And the more I try to dissect every layer, the more it gets rowdy in my head. I shut my eyes, my little way of focusing on something else other than the stern reminder from our stone-cold lawyer. “Where are you, babe?” I suck my teeth and flip through my call logs, not sure if I should call Baron. It's past 7 PM, more than two hours since he left even though he promised to be back in an hour.‘Is he okay?’ It's hard not to entertain the scary thoughts coming to me. I start searching the blogs, scared I’d find terrible news about him. If he had an accident or something of such, it would be all over, right?‘Breathe in, Valerie!’My breathi

Baron’s POV “Go, now,” I tell Jax once I get into the car. The pocket where the little boy’s hair is suddenly feels itchy. Ignorant, she stands by the pavement and waves as I leave. Her little boy is in her arms, still rubbing the exact spot on his scalp where I had plucked hair off. “What's next, boss?” Jax breaks the silence while driving. “To the hospital or home?” I hiss, quite scared of the result. “A standard laboratory, just not ours.” He nods and drives us in silence. My eyes remain on the window as I watch the moving houses with zero interest. I stare, blankly. My heart beats spike each second. When Jax pulls the car to a halt in a free spot in the hospital’s garage, I replace my mask. I'm anxious, too anxious. Jax takes the lead. After a brief inquiry with the receptionist, he returns to my side and escorts you to the laboratory. The place is fully equipped, Bright light, test tubes, microscope… “I want to speak with the person in charge,” I say directly to a

Once, then twice, I ring the doorbell.“Mummy!” A small voice yells from the living room. One that’s obviously Prescott’s. “Someone is at the door!” His voice reduces.I pause, giving mother and child room to communicate. Next, I hear footsteps, and the door opens. And ensure not one of you is missing.”“Yes, sir.” He nods his understanding. “Also, we’ve closed the window phase and the paperwork will proceed in about a few hours.” “Fine.
