“Are you fucking crazy?!”
Penelope groans as she snatches the velvety box of a customized diamond ring from my hand. She reads the receipt in disbelief and oddly spins into laughter.
I duck, embarrassed about the little drama in front of my domestic staff.
“50k dollars for a damn ring? Wait…” She gasps. “You didn't use your life savings for it, did you…”
It's slowly getting out of hand.
“Oh, my god.” Acting like she is struggling to breathe, she collapses into a seat around the finely decorated dining table.
“It's not just a ring, Penny. I saw the sketch in Baron's archive. I guess he would have proposed with it…” I pause to gulp air into my parched lungs. “I want to make our third anniversary special, yunno- renew our vows with his dream ring…”
“Exactly. His.” She scoffs. “It’s all about him, and never you. If he loves you a bit, he'd know that your favorite color is peach, not pink!” She slaps the glass table, causing the fancy glassware to rattle.
I can feel my staff's eyes on me and they suddenly whisper. My hands clench beside me.
“So what if he loves pink on me…”
“Vee…”
“No, listen!” My voice takes a rough tone, with rage seeping through my pores. “You know, I thought my ‘best friend' could help out.” I sigh. “But clearly, you're ruining my day. Leave.”
My stern command makes the place go still.
“What?” She stutters, shocked to her bones.
I stretch my hand out, demanding that she hands back the ring.
She chuckles in disbelief and hesitates for a brief second before slamming the box into my palm and storming out. “I hope you don't regret this.”
The loud bang follows as she slams the door shut.
“You know what, I changed my mind.” I manage a small smile. “I want this to be a private dinner… So all of you, take the day off.”
They nod and mumble their responses before leaving in obedience. Alone, I admire the customized ring with our initials; V.B. The part with my letter has a pink shade from rare stones, and the other has white, Baron’s favorite color.
I set it on the fine dining table. I took time off work to set the table, decorating it with petals and romantic candles around it.
3 PM.
Baron won't be home until 4.
Feeling a bit too extra, I have a quick shower, settle into a sexy pink two-piece that Baron got me on my birthday. The skirt is a bit too tight and the boob cups too small, but it gives off good cleavage. I have my hair styled in the exact way he always compliments me in, and douse myself in the sweet perfume he got me on our last anniversary.
Something feels odd…
I pause to listen closely. Low groans filter in through the bedroom window. My heart sinks deep in my stomach, and it suddenly feels cold. All my domestic staff are gone…
‘I have an intruder?!’
Without thinking twice, I throw on a robe, grab the bedside lamp, and head towards the sound. My bedroom overlooks the sprawling lawn in the backyard.
The noise gets louder.
Clutching tighter to my weapon, I take gentle steps, trying not to alert whoever it is. Past the garden, I see a familiar figure sobbing and murmuring at Veronica, my elder sister's grave.
Baron?!
My brain spins, trying to figure out why my husband who should be at work is at the back of our house, and on my sister's grave, crying.
“I miss you…” His polished British accent fills the air. “I have only loved you in my life, Vee…” His breath shudders as he sobs.
Thick beads of sweat streak down. My heart pounds in my chest like it will explode.
Weak to the knees, I stagger backward. My hand grows limp, causing the lamp to fall and crash. Shards of broken glass slice through my skin.
It startles Baron. He gasps, shocked. “Vee, I’m just… This isn’t what you think…”
“Don't you dare,” I'm trying not to give in. “You have a fetish for the dead…”
“No.” He shuts his eyes. “Let's not do this…”
“You love my dead sister?! Are you a psychopath?! What the…”
“I was supposed to marry her!” He bluffs and palms his face when the words spill out. “This… It was supposed to be her anniversary, not yours.”
I shake my head. None of it is making sense.
“Before cancer took her, I made her a promise to save the company.” He puffs. “It was the only reason you got into the picture.”
“No. No.” Tears threaten to fall. “We met at the Cafe, remember? I spilled coffee and you and you were just so sweet…”
“It was all planned.” He stops me from yapping. “I’m sorry.”
I take hurried steps towards him but he retreats. Hands out, I aim to touch his cheeks and shake him off the spell. I miss a step, putting pressure on the skirt as it rips, and I fall on Veronica’s grave. I remain still, sobbing.
“I’m sorry,” he continues to mumble.
My palms kiss the grave and I attempt to stand up when I see Veronica’s portrait. She was beautiful and slim, having been a model. The fine pink dress suits her pale skin and dark-blonde hair…
Shaky, my hand reaches to pull my hair. My fingers start to tremble. My hair is dyed in her shade like I'm her spitting image.
Oh, my god!
Still trembling, I manage to get on my feet. My whole body jerks in shock, even my lips are quivering. “You know I love peach yet you always get me pink dresses.”
“Come on, Vee.” It's his turn to reach for me. “I just get it in a better shade.”
I ignore him. “You make me dye my hair and diet just to fit into the small dresses even though they are custom-made.”
Thick balls of saliva threaten to choke me.
‘Shoulders high… Chin squared… Smile just a little… Keep your poise…’
His incessant lectures taunt my sanity.
I break into a loud sob. “Am I her replacement?”
“Jeez.” He stutters and rakes his hands through his jet-black hair. The truth is clear in his ocean-blue eyes, but I want him to say it…
Maybe lie to me.
“I have one question, Baron.” I sniffle. “When you call me Vee,” I stop to catch my breath, scared of the truth. “Do you mean Valerie or Veronica?”
Baron's POV"Thank you Doctor." I appreciated it and shook hands with the doctor. He nodded at me and walked away, disappearing into a ward by the left.I sighed, heading towards the exit of the hospital. I was grateful that Valerie was okay to an extent. My worries had been reduced and right now, I was headed home. The night air hit my face as I stepped outside. I took a deep breath, a temporary relief to the heaviness in my chest. I headed for my car which was parked in the hospital’s parking lot. I slid in behind the wheels, gripping the steering tightly. I was glad Valerie was stable, but something still troubled me.What I couldn't understand was why things were happening or the way they were happening. Why was I facing all? Why couldn't Veronica move on and leave Valerie and I alone? The phone call from Jax earlier kept replaying in my head like a broken record. Missing funds was now the trend in my company. The trending photo of Veronica and I that was all over the intern
Baron's POV “How is she a doctor? Is she in labor?”. I stood up from the lounge right outside the ward immediately the doctor came outside. I was worried that something might have happened to Valerie but I wasn't really scared since I knew the doctors here were professional and she was also being treated in the VIP ward.“No, Mr Baron. Your wife isn't in labor. All she's having is a little complication caused by sitting down for a long time consecutively.”Relief washed over me at the doctor’s words. My heart beat slowed at his words and I let out a breath that I didn’t realize I was holding. “What a relief to hear this, Doctor. I am always so worried. I thought my wife had entered labor. So tell me, doc… is she and the baby okay?” I asked quickly, needing the reassurance of his words. The doctor gave a small nod. “I can't really say that they are both fine. Your wife just needs her to get some rest and avoid staying in one position for too long. She needs to be around those that l
Valerie's POV“What's wrong, Valerie? Are you okay?”. Baron asked me, sitting up with concern etched on his face.I clutched my stomach, grimacing as the pain shot through me.“Baron. It hurts. My belly hurts. My baby bump.”Baron’s eyes widened instantly, panic flashing across his face. He reached for me, his hands trembling as he held my shoulders. His gaze locked onto mine with full reassurance.“Valerie, talk to me. How bad is it? Homies the pain? Explain it to me. Should I call the doctor right now? Are you in labor?” he asked in a rushed tone.Tears pricked from my eyes as I rubbed my bump gently. . “It feels sharp, Baron, although it keeps coming and going. I don't know if it's signs of labor but I doubt if it is because my water hasn't broken yet.”I whispered, my voice shaking.Without wasting another second, Baron helped me get out of the bed, his arm around my waist as he guided me to the door. “We’re not taking chances, babe.” he muttered firmly. “I’m taking you to the hospi
Valerie's POV Two weeks laterI sat by the balcony, feeling the cool breeze on my skin. I sipped from my strawberry banana smoothie pleased at the unique taste that left me rejuvenated.Baron was back to being a happy man in love with his wife and his unborn child. Though they matters concerning the fluctuation of the company's fund hasn't been resolved, the hasn't been anymore stolen funds so far Arms suddenly found its way around my waist, Baron's cologne comforting me as I sniffled his unique scent like I was a dogBaron’s lips brushed softly against the side of my neck as he kissed me, sending a warm shiver traveling down my spine. His breath against my skin, tickled as he whispered, “Are you enjoying the city’s view from up here, my love? I have been noticing you spend a lot of time up here. Do you like what you see?”A small smile curved on my lips as I leaned back against him, snuggling closer while feeling his chest rise and fall behind me. Being in his warm embrace was so
Valerie's POVI raced downstairs almost bumping into Baron who was just about to open the door. My eyes widened in excitement as I got lost in his embrace, wrapping my arms tightly around him. For a moment, I inhaled his scent, expecting him to hold me the way he always did.But he didn't. Something about his aura felt off. His arms were stiff, his body tense and he didn't hug me back. His breath was tense and that was when I pulled back to look at him. Then I looked and I could see it clearly. His face was hard, like had just wrestled with someone. His eyes were dark and looked troubled. Slowly my smile faded. “Baron,” I whispered softly, brushing his cheek. “Are you good? What happened? Why do you look so unhappy?”Baron’s chest rose and fell quickly. He looked up at me with his eyes clouded with tears and before I could even say another word, he burst into sobs. His sobs broke me instantly. I had never seen him cry and look so broken and so fragile. This was unlike him. The Baron
Valerie's POV I stood by watching a group of staff load all the baby clothes I had just bought into the back of my trunk.“You don't have to do all this, Mrs Jenna. My driver is more than capable.” I muttered, my tone calm but polite.Mrs. Jenna shook her head quickly. Js smiled, her hands clasped together as if I had just said something ridiculous. “You don't have to worry, Mrs. Baron,” she assured with a wide smile. “This is the least we can do for you. This is the very least. It is such a great honor to have you here shopping in our branch. You are an inspiration to a lot of people here. Your presence alone has brought us joy and good fortune. We are ever grateful for everything. And that's what I am begging you to please, allow us thank you I'm out little way. You deserve to be treated specially because you are indeed special.”I pressed my lips together, a soft chuckle escaping through my mouth. It was both “You have to stop with all this, Jenna. I told you to treat like you wo
