Chapter 2

Author: Island
My neighbor, Amy, was young.

Ever since she moved into our neighborhood, the entire werewolf pack had been drowning in excitement.

I once asked Lucas, "Do you think she's pretty?"

He didn't even glance at her. "What does that have to do with me? To me, you're the most beautiful."

That was then. Now, his voice was sharp with frustration as he snarled at me. "You force me into it every weekend! Do you have any idea how exhausted I am?"

"But what did I do wrong? Have you forgotten? You were the one who begged me to sleep with you. You were the one who insisted we do it twice a week…"

My throat tightened. I had done everything he asked—changed for him, compromised for him—yet in the end, he found me so repulsive it made him physically sick.

Lucas was still trying to make excuses. "That was when we were young. Do you really think I have time for that now? You're not exactly in your prime anymore…"

I turned to face him, my voice barely above a whisper. "I just turned 30 today."

The words hung between us.

Then, the weight of it crushed me.

The tears I had fought so hard to hold back spilled over. I had never felt so humiliated, so wretched.

Today was my birthday.

Lucas froze. I saw it in his eyes—he had forgotten entirely.

Even Amy, the young she-wolf next door, had wished me a happy birthday.

Maybe my smile was too bitter because Lucas' face had darkened. He looked both embarrassed and annoyed. "You know you're thirty now, so why bother caring about things that don't matter?

"I've been busy preparing for war with the Silvermane Pack. I can't afford distractions. I still remember how they broke your leg when you saved me. I'll win this fight—for you. Consider it my gift."

Pain shot through my calf as if the wound from that day had never truly healed. The memory resurfaced, raw and sharp, sending a wave of fear crashing over me.

"You want to defeat the Silvermane Pack because it's your ambition, your duty as Beta. Don't act like this is all for me."

A flicker of irritation crossed his face.

It wasn't for me. It had never been for me.

Lucas sighed as if speaking to a child throwing a tantrum. He reached out and patted my head. "Alright, stop making a fuss. I remember now, okay? I'll get you a ruby."

He treated me like a trained puppy, offering a condescending crumb, expecting me to grovel in grateful submission.

I suddenly felt drained, too exhausted to keep arguing.

"Your stomach's upset, so I won't bother you. I'll sleep in another room tonight."

That night, I dreamed of Lucas at 20.

Back then, he was just a nameless warrior, always sent on the most dangerous missions.

On my birthday that year, he had come to see me covered in wounds. He told me he had nearly died in a rogue wolf's den, but the thought of not giving me my gift had kept him alive. He had dragged himself back from the brink.

He spent everything he had to buy me a ruby. It was fake; he had been scammed.

But I didn't care. I had been so touched that I accepted his courtship anyway.

I had many choices, but no one had ever loved me as fiercely as he did.

He once said, "When you turn thirty, I'll give you the biggest ruby. By then, I'll be stronger than I am now. I'll give you the whole world."

Today, I turned 30, and my tears flowed unchecked. By morning, my eyes were raw, and the truth was undeniable—he no longer loved me.

And then, in the sanctuary of sleep, the 20-year-old Lucas returned, whispering to me to leave him.

"Grace, if there ever comes a day when I make you cry, don't hesitate. Leave me. Losing you would be the greatest punishment for me."

I jolted awake, as if waking not just from a dream, but from the last ten years of love.

I had stayed in the pack for Lucas. But if he had already betrayed our love, then I had no reason to stay.

I dug out my offer letter from the Werewolf Genetics Institute. The worn paper still carried the weight of my past achievements.

I mindlinked Ms. Murphy, the woman who had once recommended me for the program.

She had been my mentor, and I had been her brightest student—the one she regretted losing the most.

When she heard my decision, she was as excited as if it were Christmas morning.

Afraid I might change my mind, she immediately made arrangements.

"Come see me now, I'll catch you up on the latest research. Your flight to the Wolfen Kingdom is in three days. Your junior will pick you up."

Three days were just enough time to submit my mate bond dissolution request to the Werewolf Court.

"You… You have feelings for me?" I whispered. "But you never said anything?"Noah had been so kind to me. Without him, I wouldn't have survived in the Wolfen Kingdom. Yet, he never overstepped any boundaries—just a dutiful junior following Ms. Murphy's instructions, looking after me, his senior.Noah looked at me seriously. "Grace, you've turned away everyone. I know you're not ready, but with your ex-mate showing up, I had to speak up. "You've loved him for 11 years, and I was afraid I might never get another chance if I didn't say anything. So… would you consider me?"I stared into his beautiful eyes. They always reminded me of the wolf cub I once rescued as a child. "I'm not sure, but we can try dating."Without warning, he lifted me into his arms and spun me around.I let out a startled yelp, asking him to put me down. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lucas standing frozen in place. He was watching us, tears streaming down his face.In the days that followed, Lucas didn

I gradually adapted to life in the Wolfen Kingdom, a fast-paced metropolis. My son adjusted well, too. He was more mature than I had expected.Even when he saw on social media that his father had suddenly gone crazy and hit the pretty neighbor, which led to a year-long sentence, he didn't seem fazed.I had initially worried that seeing all of this would make him break down, thinking he wouldn't understand the complexities of love and hate between adult werewolves. But he seemed not to care about those things. All he cared about was loving me.He patted my head and said, "Dad turned bad. I'll take care of you, Mommy. You're so beautiful. The werewolves chasing after you are lined up from Veyron to Parisian.""Am I that beautiful?""Yeah, you're more beautiful than when you were with Dad. Now, you smell so nice, and you're happy every day. I can feel your emotions, and you smell even better now."Our boy, Remus Howl, was still young. Even though he was mostly uttering nonsense, a

Lucas still haunted my life. He sent friends to convince me and borrowed their phones to harass me. I couldn't take it anymore and changed my number. But he didn't give up. When he couldn't find me, he went after my parents instead. They couldn't ignore it anymore.Their mindlink came through, filled with frustration. "Lucas is kneeling outside our house. What exactly did he do wrong?"I couldn't understand why Lucas was so persistent. Did he think begging for forgiveness would erase the pain he caused me?My parents seemed to feel sorry for him, too. "Lucas says you're the mate the Moon Goddess chose for him. Without you, he doesn't want to live anymore."He gets drunk every night and completely ignores his duties in the pack. When he sobers up, he runs to the werewolf police station, asking about you. Even the Alpha came to us, asking where you were."I frowned. Did Lucas really love me that much? Did he love me enough to throw away his dignity?"Werewolves in the pack are

I landed at the airport, surrounded by unfamiliar scents. For the first time in years, I felt alive again. I had finally broken free from that perfect yet hollow love.Ms. Murphy's student, Noah, was there to pick me up. Even though we had never met, he instantly spotted me in the crowd.I frowned. "How did you recognize me so easily?""Ms. Murphy said you're a very beautiful lady." Noah was a gentleman, taking my luggage without being asked. "But more importantly, you were all over the news. "The Southern Pack's Beta, Lucas Howl, caused a huge scene at the airport, holding up your picture and demanding to know if anyone had seen you. The police even issued him a formal warning."I glanced at the news report. Lucas looked frantic, completely devoid of the composure a Beta was supposed to have."Grace, where are you going? Why did you block our mindlink? I know I forgot your birthday, but I was busy protecting the pack every single day."I was wrong. Please, come back. I'll giv

How do I put this? When Lucas wrapped his arms around me, I nearly gagged. But I had more dignity than he did. I simply pushed him away and said, "I'm tired of you. Go sleep by yourself."He hadn't expected the rejection. For a moment, he looked lost, but then he shamelessly leaned in again, sure that a few sweet words would fix everything. "I was just angry and talking nonsense. Did you really take it to heart?"Even tolerating his touch made my skin crawl. We had marked each other once. The Moon Goddess had blessed us with a bond that allowed us to sense each other's emotions. But my mind was filled with images of him and Amy tangled together. I didn't know if it was my imagination or if I was sharing his memories. Either way, it was disgusting.Etiquette didn't matter anymore. I gagged, dry heaving.Lucas' expression darkened.I pulled away from him, throwing his excuse back at him. "Sorry, I must've eaten something bad."Maybe I had made my disgust too obvious because Luc

I hesitated, my pen hovering over the signature line of the mate bond dissolution agreement. Before I could sign, Lucas suddenly knocked on the door, his voice sharp with irritation. "Why didn't you make breakfast today? "I swear, I've spoiled you too much. Now, you don't even cook breakfast. What do you even contribute to this family?"With a single sentence, my mate dismissed every sacrifice I had made for this household. He was tired of me, yet he still craved my cooking. No—because he thought I was the cheapest maid.A bitter laugh slipped past my lips as I pressed the pen down and signed my name. After Lucas left, I went to meet Ms. Murphy. On my way, I ran into Amy, who was watering the flowers in front of her house. She greeted me with her usual cheerfulness. "Mrs. Howl, did you and Mr. Howl fight? He stormed out this morning, looking furious. He'd even asked me for a sandwich."Amy was wearing a thin-strapped top, her shoulders marked with faint bruises—the kind onl
