Chapter 3

Author: Nuke Smoke
My phone rang again.

Vivian opened with the same question.

"Are you coming back for the afternoon meeting or not?"

I looked at Mom's bill. "Have payroll advance me one month's salary."

"What for?"

"I still need five thousand dollars for Mom's treatment."

She paused. "We're managing a cash-flow shortage, and payroll's already been locked for the cycle."

"You're management. You can't be the first one to break the rules."

"It's five thousand dollars, Vivian."

"It isn't about the amount. It's about the rules. If I make an exception for you, what about everyone else?"

I actually laughed.

"Interns don't qualify for performance bonuses, but Caleb got a secret five-thousand-dollar payout. Is that part of the rules, too?"

Her voice hardened instantly. "Where did you hear that?"

"Does it matter?"

"That was a targeted incentive. He's been doing well, and his family is struggling. He needs encouragement."

Hearing that excuse again made my head ache.

"My mother's in the hospital, and that's a private problem. But his family having money trouble is company business?"

"Adrian!" Her voice rose. "You can't target an intern just because you're upset about your bonus. Business is business. I can't play favorites just because you're my husband."

There was no point arguing.

"You've got work to do."

"What about the meeting—"

I ended the call.

Less than a minute later, Caleb texted me.

The first message read: "Mr. Lockhart, I'm sorry. Can we talk about the $5,000?"

Before I could reply, a wall of text followed.

First, he apologized for going over my head to Vivian. He said he'd only been concerned about the Halstead account and hadn't known she'd blame me. Then he offered to transfer his bonus to me.

"You deserve this money more than I do. I only helped with the project. You did the real work."

His next messages explained the debt from his father's surgery and the rent coming due at the end of the month.

"But don't worry about me. I'm young. I'll find a way. Your mom's treatment is more important."

It sounded generous. It also left him protected no matter what I did.

If I accepted, I'd be taking a desperate intern's money. If I declined, he would keep his bonus and get credit for offering it.

I sent one reply.

"Vivian gave it to you. Keep it."

He wasn't finished.

"Mr. Lockhart, are you still angry with me? Ms. Hart's only been looking out for me because she knows what things are like at home. Please don't fight with her because of me."

I put the phone down.

The person who kept letting him cross the line had never been Caleb himself.

I scrolled through my contacts until I found Grant Ellison, the founder of Westbridge Technologies.

Six months earlier, Grant had openly tried to recruit me. I'd turned him down, telling him the company I'd built with Vivian meant too much to leave.

When he answered, I got straight to the point.

"Is that job offer still on the table?"

He didn't immediately say yes.

"Did you and Vivian have a fight? If you're doing this in the heat of the moment, I'm not interested."

"I'll resign properly, and a lawyer will handle my ownership stake. This isn't a tantrum."

Only then did he discuss terms: business director, a higher salary, and the freedom to build my own team.

"I have one condition," I told him.

"Let's hear it."

"Once I sign, I need a five-thousand-dollar advance."

Silence.

Then Grant asked, "Five thousand? Not fifty thousand?"

"I accept your apology," I said.A small spark of hope appeared in Vivian's eyes."But we aren't getting married again."The hope vanished."I could try to win you back," she said. "You wouldn't have to give me an answer now.""Vivian, I believe you're truly sorry. Believing you doesn't mean I'm willing to start over.""There's no chance at all?""No."I didn't want to trap her with an ambiguous promise. And I had no intention of putting myself back in a position where I was waiting for her to change. After that, both companies' teams handled the acquisition.Westbridge decided to buy the business outright and fold it into its existing operations. When Grant reviewed the final agreement, he grinned."I hired you with a five-thousand-dollar advance. Now you're bringing me an entire company.""You're not buying it to solve my personal problems.""I know." He nodded. "If the business weren't worth buying, I wouldn't pay a cent."On the day the deal closed, the old company k

During the next thirty days, Vivian stopped using work as an excuse to contact me.Once, she visited Mom with nothing more than a simple bag of fruit. They talked for half an hour, and Mom didn't suggest we reconcile.Later, Mom told me Vivian genuinely regretted what she'd done."Are you sure you don't want to think it over?" Mom asked.I shook my head.Understanding someone's regret and trusting them again were two different things. On the thirtieth day, Vivian and I returned to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. Before we signed the last documents, the clerk confirmed that we were proceeding voluntarily.Vivian hesitated for several seconds."Yes," she finally said. "Voluntarily."When the final divorce decree was issued, she slipped off her wedding ring."Do you regret it?"I looked down at the papers in my hand."I'm sad. But I don't regret it."She nodded and didn't push any further.Five days after our marriage officially ended, the company held an emergency

That night, Mom asked about the divorce."Are you really sure?""I am.""Don't leave just because you're angry, and don't stay just because you feel sorry for her. Ask yourself one thing: can you still trust her?"I thought about it.Maybe my love for Vivian hadn't disappeared completely. But a marriage couldn't survive on memories of being in love. The next time the company and my family needed her at the same time, I had no idea which one she'd choose.More importantly, I wasn't willing to gamble on it again."No," I told Mom. "I can't."Three days later, my attorney filed the divorce petition.Vivian called the night she received the court notice."Do you really have to drag our marriage into court?""You refused to negotiate.""You won't give an inch?""I gave you six years."She stayed silent for a long time before hanging up.I watched the lights shining in windows across the city long into the night. I didn't feel victorious.I'd simply stopped waiting. The com

The wind outside the hospital was fierce.Vivian pulled her coat tighter and stood in silence for a long time before she spoke."I can transfer the five thousand today. I'll have your year-end bonus recalculated, too."I'll take back the car. Caleb's reward will be reviewed.""And then?""You leave Westbridge. Come back to the company. Same job, same authority."I looked at her. "If Halstead hadn't paused its renewal, would you be standing here?""We're talking about our marriage.""Everything you've offered is about the business."She pressed her lips together.I knew that expression. Whenever Vivian didn't want to admit she was wrong, she'd go quiet until she found another argument.Sure enough, she soon said, "Husbands and wives shouldn't keep score like this. You helped when the company needed money. When you need help, I can make it up to you. One failure to communicate shouldn't end a marriage.""When the company needed cash, we were married, so I was supposed to hand

"A divorce agreement," I repeated."Quitting your job wasn't enough? Now you want a divorce, too?" Vivian's voice shot up."Our professional relationship is over. There's no reason to keep dragging out our marriage."I could hear her breathing change."Adrian, you're throwing away six years over one disagreement at work?"I said nothing.I'd spent years believing that six years together couldn't possibly be undone by one argument. That belief was why I'd kept making excuses for her.But our marriage hadn't been worn down by one five-thousand-dollar dispute. It had been worn down by countless moments when she assumed I would be the one to give in.In the early days, we'd lived in a rental with a leaking roof. The night the company landed its first contract, Vivian came home with two cans of beer. She'd promised that when we had money, we'd throw the kind of wedding celebration neither of us had been able to afford.Eventually, we had the money. We even had the time. Somehow, n

Vivian's grip tightened around her phone."That's impossible. What did Westbridge offer him?"She immediately assumed Grant must have put an astronomical package on the table. If this was about salary and position, she could still negotiate."I don't know his regular compensation," Mr. Bennett replied. "But Grant mentioned that Adrian asked for only one extra thing.""What?""A five-thousand-dollar advance."Vivian went still."Five thousand?""That's right. Grant thought he meant fifty thousand at first. Adrian said he just needed five thousand urgently."Mr. Bennett kept talking, but his words faded into a blur.Vivian remembered my phone call from the hospital. I'd told her Mom's treatment would cost another five thousand dollars and asked for a salary advance. She'd refused. She'd said cash was tight and that making an exception for her husband would undermine company policy. On that same day, she'd approved Caleb's $5,000 bonus. Later she'd signed off on a company car
