Chapter 3

Author: The Awakened
Jessica strode forward in her four-inch heels. Surrounded by a group of bodyguards and assistants, she radiated charisma.

Her features were sculpted to perfection. She was tall, poised, and had lips as red as flame. Every step she took carried a commanding aura.

The moment Leo saw her, he broke into sobs and ran to Jessica, but her bodyguards stopped him.

She frowned in visible disgust.

"Who the heck are you?"

Leo froze on the spot. He then wailed even harder.

He used to be fairly handsome. He could have been endearing even when he cried.

However, with his face swollen beyond recognition, it was hard to even look at.

It wasn't until her assistant leaned in and whispered a few words in her ear that realization flickered across her eyes.

"Leo?"

Anger appeared on her cold, beautiful face.

"Who had the nerve to beat my secretary into this state? Do they think I'm a joke?"

Leo, who was moved to tears, tried to approach Jessica again, but she took a step back.

"Come talk to me after your face heals."

She waved him off with open disdain before finally turning her attention to me.

I had been observing her for a while now.

Just like Steven said, his granddaughter was stunning, bold, and sharp-edged. She was truly unique.

Unfortunately, the way she looked at me now was full of contempt. It felt almost like she was looking at something dirty.

"Hello, I'm Christopher Sutton."

I stepped forward to introduce myself, but she cut me off immediately.

"You seem ordinary."

She smirked. "I have no idea what kind of spell you cast on my grandfather to make him insist I meet you."

She looked me up and down. Her gaze grew cold.

"If you know what's good for you, go back to wherever you came from.

"And if you dare say anything bad about me in front of Grandpa–"

She didn't finish the sentence, but the threat was clear.

To be honest, I had planned to leave right after meeting her anyway.

My condition was too dangerous. I could lose control anytime.

I had already accepted that I'd spend my life alone.

This trip was purely out of respect for Steven.

Even so, her arrogance sparked a fire in me.

"So you're the one Steven set me up with?"

I met her gaze directly. "We haven't even exchanged a few words, and you're already telling me to get lost. Is this what passes for manners in the Gardner family?"

Her expression darkened instantly.

"Do you even realize where you are?"

She sneered. "This is my turf! How dare you lecture me on how to behave?"

Her gaze swept over my plain clothes. She seemed even more disgusted.

"Grandpa must be losing it. He's trying to force me to marry a loser like you."

She clenched her jaw. "He even threatened to shut down my company if I refuse!"

There were gasps from around us.

People looked at me with shock written all over their faces.

Was this unremarkable man actually Jessica's fiancé?

Was he favored by that mysterious commanding general in the Gardner family?

"Why him?"

"Is he even worthy?"

Whispers rippled through the room.

When their gazes landed on the bodyguards lying unconscious all over the floor, their voices grew soft.

"Tsk. He's just some brute."

"He's an ugly man trying to get with a pretty girl."

I smiled.

"It's fine if you don't like me. I'm not forcing anything. You can explain it to Steven yourself."

I suppressed the violent urge inside me.

"But right now, I need to get to my room."

I could feel it. I was about to lose control of that thing inside me.

"Ms. Gardner! You can't let him go!"

Leo suddenly leaped forward and pointed at me as he shouted with all his might.

"He's the one who did this to me! He even took all those bodyguards down!"

He kept piling it on. "He knew I was reserving that presidential suite for your meeting, and he still tried to steal it!

"He clearly has no respect for you or the Gardner family!"

Jessica's expression turned ice-cold as soon as she heard what Leo said. The way she looked at me was like she's staring at a dead man.

It turned out my heart was on the right side of my chest. When Jessica heard that, she broke down laughing and crying at the same time. She frantically ordered people to get me into an ambulance.Throughout the journey, she held my hand tightly and felt the warmth of the body. That was the only thing that kept her relaxed. When I woke up at the hospital, the first thing I did was reach for my chest."Thanks," I murmured. My heart beat rapidly for a while."I was wrong about you in the past."I knew that if my alter hadn't held back at the last moment and suppressed his killing instinct, there would've been a bloodbath in the hotel. All these years, everyone, including me, had misunderstood him.Steven sat beside my hospital bed. Guilt was written all over his face as he held my hand."Chris, this is on me. If I hadn't been so foolish–" He let out a long sigh.I shook my head and coughed a couple of times."It's not your fault."After saying a few more words, Steven's eyes

It turned out I was the one Jessica had been searching for all along.Seven years ago, she had been kidnapped by an overseas espionage group for being Steven's only granddaughter. They held her in an abandoned factory near the border.Using her as leverage, they tried to force Steven to hand over classified state secrets. To protect the country, Steven chose to abandon his own granddaughter. Negotiations collapsed. That was when I went in alone after disobeying Steven's full retreat order and secretly infiltrated the factory. That night, it was raining cats and dogs. I was covered in blood when I kicked open the steel door. Jessica had already been tied to explosives. She was only fourteen then. While she trembled in the corner, her face was covered in tears. The moment she saw my fierce expression, her eyes lit up."Don't be afraid."I cut the ropes binding her and pulled her into my arms."I'm taking you home."Gunfire rained down behind us. Explosions decimated half the

"Grandpa?"Jessica's voice rose in pitch."What are you doing here?"The muzzle of her gun was still emitting smoke, but her hand trembled slightly at Steven's sudden appearance.Steven staggered forward. The moment he saw me lying in a pool of blood, all color drained from his face. He could barely stay standing."Jessica! What have you done? Why did you shoot?"His voice was hoarse. It sounded like someone was strangling him."He's a monster!" Jessica screamed. Her finger was still on the trigger. Her eyes were bloodshot."Grandpa, have you lost your mind? Why would you force me to marry something like that?"The surrounding crowd immediately chimed in. They pointed at me as they hurled insults."That's right! He's a monster and a lunatic! He almost killed all of us!""Someone like him belongs in a psych ward, not out here hurting people!""Ms. Gardner, shoot him again! Don't give him a chance to hurt anyone else!"After they egged her on, she raised the gun again and ai

"Bingo."I snapped my fingers. "You got it right."Come to think of it, I should thank you."My gaze drifted across Leo and Jessica. "If it weren't for you two, I'd still be locked in that disgusting room."Seeing the shock and confusion on Jessica's face, I nodded."That's right. The reason he kept insisting on going back to that room was because he was afraid I might–"I grinned widely. "Kill all of you."The moment those words came out, everyone kneeling on the floor became agitated. They pointed at Jessica and her men while yelling at them angrily."It's all your fault! If it weren't for you people, he would've been locked up already!""That's right. Why drag us down with you if you want to get yourselves killed?"I snorted as I looked at their faces. This was human nature.Seven years ago, I was born because of a classified mission.I was the one who eliminated their enemy, but they feared me as if I was a beast. As for the other guy inside my body, he actually chose

"They're too slow."I sighed. Like a ghost, I suddenly appeared in front of Jessica. I leaned close to her ear."Your men aren't good enough. If you want my arms and legs, you'll need a lot more than that."In the blink of an eye, I was in front of Leo again. My tone was impatient."You've been yapping in front of me the entire time. It's annoying!"If that useless coward hadn't let you go earlier, I would've crushed your throat the moment I saw you."A dark stain spread across Leo's pants.I glanced down at the suspicious liquid on the floor. Disgust was written all over my face."That's just filthy. I might as well get rid of it for you!"Before he could react, I drove my foot straight between his legs.He couldn't even scream. His body curled up like a worm and convulsed uncontrollably. After a moment of silence, people started screaming."Help! Someone help!""He's a monster. I don't want to die!""Let me out!""This has nothing to do with me!"People scrambled towa

"What?"Jessica's pupils constricted instantly. She released me and ran upstairs. The moment she saw the room, she realized the walls were at least ten feet thick and completely sealed with steel plating. Cameras covered every inch of the interior."How could a room like this even exist?"Her voice trembled.Moments later, she hurried back down and stopped about ten feet away from me.I caught the flicker of fear beneath her flawless makeup."W-Who exactly are you? Why would you stay in a place like that?"I looked around at the crowd. Excitement was bubbling up inside me.It had been a long time since I'd been out to play.Every time I woke up before, I was trapped inside a completely sealed room. Now, I slowly stretched my stiff limbs and savored this long-lost sense of freedom.I couldn't help but smile."So many people. This is perfect."My voice was so soft that it almost sounded like I was talking to myself, but the temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly.
