ARIA

I'm running through the woods again, chasing him. He's right in front of me. I can smell him in the air this time, and I won't stop until I've caught him and asked him what the hell he wants from us.

But then he disappears once again.

I stop, my panting loud in the empty forest. I look around until my head is spinning, but I can't see where he's gone.

Am I imagining all this? Is it all just in my head?

Have I gone crazy?

Just when I'm about to give up and head back to Ironclaw, I whirl

  • The Ice Alpha’s Mate   168: Loyal Gathering

ARIAI thought that our group would be larger, but it’s not. Sure, the living room is crowded with people, but we’re the minority. Ironclaw is surrounded by enemies now. We’re not at peace in our own pack. Nothing devastates me more. The group consists of Anne and all the Nocturns who came here with her—the ones of fighting age, of course—and Ryder’s hockey team. Well, the ones who stayed to fight. Anne is the one who breaks the silence. “I heard that you’re stepping down as leader of this revolution, Ryder. Is that true?”“Yes. I had to. I didn’t have a choice. That’s why we’re all here.”I place my hand on his back to encourage him to keep going. We didn’t want this to happen and we’d even discussed how we would never let Alpha Dorson or Wilson take control of our pack, but in this case, if we didn’t make that decision, then Ryder’s reputation would go down the drain. It’s a difficult moment for him, so I’m really proud of how he’s been reacting. I’m sure everyone else will un

  • The Ice Alpha’s Mate   167: Granting Wishes

RYDERI follow Zach through the road, trying to prepare myself for what I'm about to see. I hear their shouts before I see them. The mob is standing right in front of Ironclaw U, and standing right in front of them, seemingly trying to appease them, is Alpha Dorson. The sight of his face fills me with rage and my footsteps slow. Zach must notice this because he pauses and looks back at me. He opens his mouth to tell me something but doesn't have a chance to because Aria approaches us. "Ryder," she says breathlessly, fisting my shirt in her hands, "what will you do?""You should've stayed home.""Not a chance."My gaze shifts back to the crowd and this time, Alpha Dorson and I make eye contact. He has a clear smug look on his face, which slowly disappears until his expression is blank, but he doesn't convince me. I know that he's the reason why all of this is happening. He planned this from the very start—both he and Wilson. "Ryder," Aria says again, concern lacing her voice. I t

I barely have time to think before he attacks, teeth sinking right into the fleshy part of my neck. I howl and the pain rips me from this nightmare. I sit up in bed, covered in sweat and breathing hard. I'm in my room. I'm home. Ray isn't here. I look over at Ryder in the dark and he's still fast asleep. I let the sight of him reassure me. I didn't even hear him come home last night because he spent so much time in the medical tent, questioning the guys who were in c

  • The Ice Alpha’s Mate   165: Aftermath

RYDERThe attackers have all been killed, except for a handful who ran away. Anne told me that Aria would be at home with the doors locked, but after finding it empty, despair washes over me.Where is she?I start looking for her like a madman, starting with the places where she can usually be find. The medical tent is empty, and I doubt that she'd return to her uncle's gravesite, but I'll have to check anyway, because if she's not there, then I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.I cross the town square and ignore everyone all around me. The Nocturns are rushing toward the people who've been injured in hopes of healing them. I should be trying to find out where these attackers came from and how they got through our people, but I don't have time for that, not right now."Alpha Ryder."I keep going."Alpha Ryder!"A hand clamps down on my shoulder and I turn my head to look over my shoulder. I see Alpha Dorson standing behind me and sure enough, Wilson isn't that far behind hi

ARIARyder heads to the university to check on the new residents there, and instead of heading home like I told him I would, I decide to stop by the medical tent, where Anne is patching up a young Nocturn boy."Is everything alright?" I ask as I approach them."Oh, yeah. Training was a little tough on this guy, but he'll be okay." She caresses his shaved head. He has to be around fifteen, and it looks like he hurt his shoulder. "You're good to go, Jamie. You'll be as good as new by tomorrow."He leaves the tent and the two of us are alone. She starts cleaning up and asks, "Did Ryder find you?""Yeah. We were together.""Did he say anything about the meeting?""He said it went well.""Ah.""Why? Have you heard something?""No. I try to stay out of the legal matters. I don't think I'll be much use to anyone there. Ryder can handle himself." She clears the bed of the bloodied towels and then turns to look at me as she takes her gloves off. "You don't want to ask me about my guest?"I bri

  • The Ice Alpha’s Mate   163: Crossing Lines

RYDERWho the heck is sending my girl roses? I know I need to be a hell of a lot calmer about this whole thing, but I'm fuming. In my mind, there's only one person who could have put that rose there, and it's Wilson. That fucking pathetic piece of shit. Just thinking about it makes me want to storm inside the packhouse and tear him apart with my bare hands. I'd do it. Oh, I would. But Aria's reminder returns to me and I let her words ground me. If we start fighting among ourselves, we won't stand a chance against our enemies, and our cause will go straight down the drain along with all our hopes and dreams. How much more of this am I supposed to stand, though? I can't go about life terrified of saying what I feel, or they'll never respect me. Some things need to be straightened out, and if Wilson finds that a problem, then that's on him. The meeting with Alpha Dorson and the newcomers finally takes place. I enter the office and find everyone there, waiting for me. I grab a seat
