001: First Encounter

ARIAWe're losing the game, and I've never felt as tense as I do now.I can practically taste our defeat in the air, and there's no doubt that the players can, too. The Silvertails have always been Ironclaw's biggest enemies—their winning this hockey match in our territory would make things even more painful for us.I watch as the bodies of the players collide with each other, the ice cracking beneath their skates. It's violent, so much that blood is splattered all over the ice.I've seen plenty of blood in the two months that I've been working as an intern nurse for the team, but tonight, things are different. This isn't just a game—it's a war."By the goddess, damn him," the coach, my uncle Barty Murdock, says as he runs his fingers through his hair. His face is bright red from the stress, and he's sweating even though it's pretty cold all around us. "He's going to get hurt. He's not watching his left side!"My uncle is referring to the team captain, the Alpha's son. His uniform is

002: Intense Looks

ARIA"What?" Uncle Barty asks as he watches me place all my equipment back in the cabinets of the medical room. "You're not serious. All the youngsters are going. What do you mean, you won't go?"I sigh. I've tried explaining this to him a hundred times but it seems the truth—or maybe my reality—doesn't stick. "I don't have any friends. I can't just show up to a party alone. It's awkward and I'd rather not."He folds his arms and gives me a look that I can only describe as The Coach Look. "And how are you supposed to make friends if you don't go out? Help me understand that.""You don't have to. Besides, you wouldn't get it. You haven't been a teenager for like four decades."I chuckle at my own joke but he doesn't look amused. "What I hate to see is a young woman stuck at home because she's afraid of taking things a step forward.""You're the one who told me to keep a low profile.""Yeah. Don't yell at the Alpha's son. Not don't go out and make any friends. Those are two completely d

003: Dangerous Intrigue

RYDER"You already kicked my friend out, so we might as well," is what she says to me in response to my question. For a few beats, I don't know what to say back to her. I've never had anyone—and I mean anyone—talk to me the way she did just now."Tyler Hawke's your friend?" I ask, my voice laced with disbelief and this anger that really has no place inside of me. Why the fuck do I care if she's friends with that fucking loser? Why am I calling him that when we're teammates and I respect his work? Why do I feel this spark of jealousy and possessiveness just at the thought of them standing a few feet away from each other?Nothing makes sense anymore, and I realize this happened from the second I laid my eyes on her in that medical room. Her scent—it came from out of nowhere and hit me with a force that still has me confused. It was only a hint, though. A breath later, it was gone. My wolf held onto it, though, and maybe that's why I'm here.Standing in front of her like an idiot, even a

004: After Class

ARIAC?I got a C on my Werewolf History paper!?I look up at Professor Denver in disbelief. He gives me a look behind his glasses and says smoothly, "Do better next time, Murdock.""But...what could've gone wrong? I'm sure I—""Anything you wish to discuss can be done so after class," he tells me dismissively before moving on to hand out more graded assignments. I flip through the pages in disbelief. I gave this paper my all, like I always do, yet for some reason, nothing seems to be enough for Professor Denver.I'm the lowest-performing student in his class, which is crazy considering I do well in everything else, which is why I got a scholarship to study at Ironclaw U to begin with. But I have to maintain a certain grade to keep the scholarship. If I get kicked out, what am I supposed to do?I'm the oldest student in my class because Uncle Barty just didn't have the money to pay my tuition. I worked a few odd jobs after high school, demoralized because I really wanted to continue m

005: The Fall

RYDERInstead of answering my question, she gasps like I scared her, and without a word, starts to walk away from me.I scoff indignantly as I stare at her retreating figure. Will this girl ever cease to amaze me? Granted, I just met her, so I don't know what she's like, but if this is how she acts toward the future Alpha of her pack, how does she treat everyone else?I have to jog to catch up to her, and once I do, I grab her arm to stop her. Irritation courses through me, thick and prickly, at the realization that I was just ignored. Openly. Right to my face. "Are you deaf? I asked you a question!"She tears her arm out of my grip. "And I clearly don't want to answer it! What kind of question is that, anyway? Why would I be hurt?""Because Professor Denver has a reputation around here. You don't know? You haven't heard?"Her eyes are a little wide, but she's trying to mask her nervousness. I can tell. "What kind of reputation?"I shake my head at her. I can't stop myself from doing

006: Home Routine and Inner Changes

ARIAUncle Barty and I sit across from each other, not saying a word. When he's being an impossible person, I can't deal with him. Now, he has it in his head that I should quit being the team's medic and find an excuse to give the headmaster once I'm asked about it.According to him, someone made a complaint about me.And of course, I know who it is.I silently eat my food. To be fair, it tastes like ashes in my mouth. The news of my having to quit the team made me so upset. I was learning a lot, and of course, I have a lot of love for hockey and anything to do with healing. It's unfair. It truly is.He drops his fork so it hits against his plate noisily and I throw him a look. "Enough of this!" he exclaims, his face reddening. "I'm tired of this tension. I won't have this under my roof!"I shrug. "I'm not the one who's being irrational here, Unc."He gives me The Coach Look again. It's my turn to drop my fork. "Why don't you just tell me who did it? I could try to talk to the person

007: Breakup

RYDERI give my split lip another look in the mirror. If I had let Dan put some stitches on it, it would've healed faster. I keep forgetting it's there and the cut keeps reopening.Dammit.The fall was unexpected, but it's about time I got over it. Shit happens. I can't focus on that. What stood out to me about the whole thing was how distracted I was by her. It's like her presence compelled me or something. Now that it's in the past and I can think about it more clearly, I realize it was pretty strange indeed.I press the ice pack to my lips and keep pacing the corridor outside my father's office. He's in a meeting with his Beta, Martin Palmer. Right after, I'm sure he'll want to see me.He usually doesn't arrange meetings with me during the week, because I have to leave my dorm and drive all the way to our house, so this has to be important. And that's saying something, because when something is important, Calvin Drexel takes it very seriously. After what feels like an eternity, the

008: The Start of Friendships

ARIAAs I walk toward my Wolf Biology class, Ryder and his group of friends walk past me, and sure enough, his eyes are on me in that way I find so unnerving.I'm the first to look away, not caring how that affects his view of me. I'm openly avoiding him—I don't want to have any more unnecessary interactions with him. Who can predict what will happen next?Maybe he'll have me expelled from the university entirely. After my class, I head outside for some fresh air. The university is surrounded by gardens and so much greenery, so there are countless places where you could stop to take a breather and mentally prepare yourself for the next class, or for whatever reason, really.I'm standing near the entrance, arms folded. I see Ryder and his group of rowdy friends standing only a few feet away from me, and of course, his eyes find mine again. I rearrange the strap of my bag and start to turn around to head back inside, always annoyed that I won't have the little break I've been envisionin

009: Harassment

ARIAI manage to find an empty table, which is a relief.Tyler isn't here, though.I kind of thought he would be, simply because I was late. Putting stitches on my uncle's finger took quite some time.I'm not worried—I'm sure he'll come. Tyler doesn't seem like a liar, though it could be that he forgot, considering he was in such a rush.I pull my phone out and go through it. I mostly just go through the university's blogs. Our social media platform—Howlr—is boring to me. I mostly just follow the university's page to find out what's happening.I'm thinking of applying for the job at the library. It would be great, considering I don't have the job as an intern anymore. I have to do something with my time.I can't sit around and cry about something that won't have a solution. As a coach, Uncle Barty always told me never to quit. Never. The door opens and I turn my attention to it to find out if it's Tyler, but it's not.Ryder.I look back at my thorn as he walks past with his friends. W

010: Explosively Angry

ARIALunch was great, and I just had the best burger in the whole world.Food at Artie's is always amazing. I come here with my uncle occasionally and never get disappointed. Tyler turns to me with a smile and mentions, "That was great, wasn't it?"I nod. "Amazing."Tyler had like three burgers, two sides of fries, and nachos on top of that. I don't know where he put it all. I guess athletes do need to eat a lot."We should do this more often," he casually mentions before turning to look at me with an alarmed look. "I mean, if you want to, of course.""Of course, I do," I say genuinely.Tyler is a cool guy, and I'd really like to have him as a friend. This lunch was enough for me to realize that we have more in common than I initially realized. And the conversation was so entertaining that I forgot that Ryder and the rest of the team were behind us. In fact, I didn't even bring up the thing he said we would talk about concerning the complaint. What does it matter, anyway? I didn't wan
