"Stay in your positions. He knows we're here," I tell the warriors through a mindlink, making my way down the deserted, snow-covered road. The gravel is frozen under the snow, and the low sun that casts cold shadows across my skin is a daunting reminder that Jane is in danger.

The center of the pack grounds appears empty at first, but as I walk closer, I start to see them. The wolves are watching me from the dark shadows. They're hiding in wait, behind trees and buildings. There are no women or children hiding in their homes. They knew we were coming.

My eyes land on Chris, who is standing in the center of what resembles our training pit. There are barriers on every side, and I can only see the upper half of him as he stands there with a knowing grin on his face.

"Call the skirmish dogs off. Then we can talk," he shouts from a hundred yards out. Good, he thinks I'd skirmish, like my father would have. Good to know I didn't completely fuck this up.
