LOGINJane has one goal: to escape. She is tired of being beaten and belittled by her pack. In a world where wolves are ruthless and feared by the human race, she desperately wishes to get away. Just when she thinks she may finally be free of her abuse, one man turns her whole world upside down. Lucas has been avoiding his title of King of the Wolves, fighting his father to keep the title as long as possible. When sudden sickness forces Lucas to step up to the plate, he runs across the most peculiar woman he has ever met during an inspection of a pack. She is cold as ice, distant and silent, and he wonders what he could do to break those walls apart.
View MoreThe heel of his boot connects painfully to the side of my face as I lie shaking on the floor. My cry of pain is cut short by another blow to the stomach, and I try to pull my legs in front of my stomach.
"No. You take it, like the good mutt you are," Alpha Chris says through gritted teeth. Despisingly, I release my legs and let his kicks land on my stomach with brutal force. I bite down on my bottom lip, holding in the cries that threaten to fall until my throat feels as though I am going to vomit.
When the blows finally leave me cold and bloodied on the floor, I listen to the sound of his boots clicking across the stone floor.
"Did you learn your lesson about taking food, Jane?" He asks through panting breaths. As I squint my eyes, I can see him readjusting his pearl snap shirt that harbors drops of my blood on the front. When I try to respond to his question, my throat burns from where his hands had squeezed, and I cough instead.
Alpha Chris lets out an echoing laugh that causes a shiver to run down my spine, just before the dungeon door slams closed with him on the other side. I let out a long, ragged breath before trying to stand. I don't get very far before my legs give out, and I am left on the ground once more, unable to make it to the dirtied mattress in the corner.
Technically, it is more of a basement. Our pack house isn't very large, but there are other homes spread out in the area where the wolves live. There is a barred window that shines a small amount of the dying light into my chamber, and the door is just a normal door without iron bars or big locks on it. Any other wolf would be able to break the door down and walk out.
Not me, though. I am stuck on the locked side of the door. I have my wolf, but I can't feel her when the pack doctor comes in every day to inject wolfsbane into my veins. It burns worse than any form of beating or sexual assault I have suffered from Alpha Chris or the other pack members, but worse than the pain, it dilutes my senses, making me dizzy nearly every second of the day.
They are not diluted enough to not notice the stench of cigarette smoke covered with cologne, waving towards me a few hours after Alpha Chris had left me on the ground in a bloody heap. My legs instantly find their strength at the scent, and I stumble as far from the door as possible, huddling myself into the corner as he walks back into the room.
"Get the fuck up, Jane. We've got company and I can't have you down here while they're here." He says, wrapping his hand into my hair and pulling upwards until I am standing.
"Where will I go, Alpha?" I ask when he shoves me towards the door. I nearly stumble back to the ground, but I catch myself just before doing so. The effects of the wolfsbane are still clearly in my system.
"First, you're going to get hosed down outside because you reek," he says with another shove as he forces me up the stairs with his hand at my back. When we walk through the hallways, I keep my head down as we pass by others. Embarrassment courses through me when I glance down at my lack of clothing. My undergarments are dirtied with grime, and the only piece of coverage I have is a shirt that Alpha Chris gave me after tearing my others apart. Holes tatter the fabric, and it covers hardly anything.
He was not lying when he said I was going to be hosed down. I stood outside in the snow, barefoot, with my hands cupped around my pale skin to force the shivers down. After a few minutes of the hose water hitting me, nearly every feeling in my body disappears, and I let him hose me down without cries or shivers.
When he was finished hosing me off, he took me to a room, handing me a dress and new undergarments. Whoever is coming over must be very important if he is letting me dress like a normal person. It has been years since I have had the privilege of wearing clothes without holes.
"Don't fuck this up. You're going to be with the mades, got it?" He grabs my wrist with a brusing force that makes my brows crease.
"Yes, alpha," I tell him, desperate to get his grip off me. He only responds by pulling me closer to him with my hand. His free hand instinctively goes around my throat as he brings his face inches from mine, taking a deep breath in.
"If you do good, I'll take advantage of your clean state," he says with a grin that makes my stomach twist in fear. He drops my hand with a flick, leaving his red imprint on my skin.
"If you don't, well, Beta Mike and I might have some steam to blow off," he adjusts the sleeve of his shirt, and I realize he has changed it from the previously blood-covered one.
When I follow him down to the kitchen, the maids are all already holding trays in a line, ready to enter the dining area with them. I immediately fall in line with them, picking up a random tray at the end. Alpha Chris disappears from the kitchen, and we wait. We wait for several minutes in silence, until a butler pokes his head around the corner to signal our entry.
I focus on my feet, ensuring that the wolfsbane doesn't take its toll as I try to take the dish to the end of the table, placing it in line with the others. I don't look up from the ground, but I can smell his cigarette smoke and something I can't place. Something new that makes my stomach warm with comfort.
"Go away," Alpha Chris says to the line of maids, and we all turn to go around the other side of the table. Just as I think I am in the clear, a hand reaches from their seat, wrapping a large, warm hand around my wrist.
Lucas"Two words, 15 letters. A type of building or home?" Her voice is soft, but it is stern, like she is frustrated with the paper in front of her. I put the cup down I had been drying, rounding the counter to look at the newspaper from over her shoulder. "Hmm. Oh, split-level house." I say, planting a kiss on her head and returning the dishes. She had made pancakes and bacon for breakfast, but she is still eating the pancake that she won't finish. "Oh, thanks," she says with a smile, putting the last word of the codeword puzzle into the page. There is a crash from the living room, and both of us look at each other before I put a plate down, and she jumps to her feet. We round the corner together, finding the culprit of the noise sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of a broken picture frame. "Clarissa, what did we say about touching the pictures on the wall?" Jane asks her sternly as I pick her up from under her arms. She lets out a laugh as I hoist her into the air, and I
JaneHe doesn't stop running until we reach the bedroom, and the nerves in my stomach seemlessly reappear. He uses his foot to close the door as his hands cup my face, pulling me into his kiss. I respond greedily, running my hands through his soft brown hair. His legs gently usher mine backwards until the back of them bumps into the side of his bed. When his lips pull away from mine, and he moves them down my neck, I take a sharp breath in. "Wait," I say, trying my best to stay focused on the topic in my head. "Yeah?" He says, lips still brushing against the skin of my neck. Despite my thoughts, I pull my head back to allow him better access. "What if," I start to say, but have to hold my breath when his hands find the zipper of my dress. He inches it down slowly, while continuing to tickle me with his kisses. "Yeah?" His voice is raspy as he pulls away from my neck, taking my lips with his again while his hands start to push my dress down from my shoulders. It slides down easily
JaneIt's Sharyl on the other side of the door, and I hold my breath to make sure she can't hear me. "You lost my bride?" Luke says with a smile on his face, but his voice sounds stern, selling the part to his mother on the other side of the door. I bite my lip to keep the laughter in that threatens in my voice. "No, she just. Are you sure she's not in there? Whose in there with you, Luke?" Damn wolf hearing. He rolls his eyes before pulling the door open to reveal a very pissed off mom. "Luke! Don't you know it's bad luck to see her? You were supposed to be downstairs ten minutes ago," her words trail off as she takes him by the arm, dragging him downstairs with her. He looks back at me one last time, throwing me a thumbs-up from over his shoulder. I lag behind them slowly until Rebecca meets me at the back door. "You had me worried, Jane." Her voice is light with excitement, but I can hardly manage a tight smile in her direction. "Sorry. It's just a lot," I say, taking in a de
JaneGood goddess all mighty, Shayrl and Rebecca have not let me rest a wink since we told them we were getting married. I think Rebecca enjoys doing it because it takes her mind off James, and Shayrl likes teaching me all there is about being a good Luna and Queen. Every time we have a conversation, I can tell she is hurting without her mate. Even though he cheated on her and has done unspeakable things, he is still her mate. I just can never be the person she talks to about it.We wanted the wedding to be soon, but I didn't think they would insist on putting it all together in the timespan of two weeks. I haven't hardly spent any time with Luke, but both Rebecca and Shayrl say it is for the best. They claim the distance will make the wedding day special. "Purple or blue?" "Yellow or pink?" "Chocolate or velvet?" "Bridesmades?" That was a whole day's worth of explanation. So many questions that I couldn't answer, because I have never had chocolate cake, or any cake for that mat
Jane Luke wasn't very thrilled at what I told him I needed to do, but here he is driving me to where we're headed. I keep the map in my lap, hovering the crystal above it every so often, ensuring that he is still in the same spot."Are you sure about this?" Luke asks for the thousandth time as we pull into the parking lot of the rough-looking motel. It is single-story, and the stench of cigarettes can be smelled from miles away from it. I turn my nose up in disgust as I unbuckle my seatbelt. "Yes, I am sure. What's he gonna do, kill me?" I ask with a sly grin directed at him. It is possible that he thinks I have become arrogant since coming back to life, but the truth is, I am just masking my fear with the use of jokes. It seems to be very effective, for now that is. "Don't forget the safe word, alright? I'll be there in an-" I cut him off with a sigh and a smile, adjusting the hood over my head as the rain falls heavily over us. "I got it, Luke," I tell him, watching the wolf com
LucasHer hand is cold in mine, and I can't stop the pain that runs through me. I should bury her, move on, but I just can't let go. Arch has knocked on the door a few times since we got back, trying to get me to come out and talk to the warriors, but I can't bring myself to do it. I miss her. So many things I wish I had done before this. I should have claimed her as mine instead of worrying about things out of our control. It's not her fault she couldn't have kids. I should have been the person she could talk to about it instead of the person pushing her away from it. I can't stand myself right now, and all I want to do is keep her hand in mine until I wake from this nightmare. Just as I am about to drift to sleep, knees on the floor and her hand in mine as she lies on the bed, I feel her. The twitch in her hand. I blink into the crook of my arm, freeing the welled tears inside of them. Maybe I was just imagining it. It's been almost three days since the attack. But it happens ag
