Chapter 1

Penulis: Echo
“I propose we fire Caroline. Immediately.”

Lia’s voice cut through the quarterly board meeting like a shockwave.

I looked at the junior assistant, just three months out of college. She stood at the front of the conference room, gripping a remote, a look of ruthless triumph on her young face.

Two dozen pairs of eyes snapped to me.

“Lia, what are you talking about?” I set down my coffee cup, frowning. What game was this girl playing?

She clicked the remote.

The big screen flashed, displaying my attendance records and expense reports for all to see.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please look at the hard evidence.” Lia’s voice trembled with a giddy, nervous excitement. “For the past three months, Caroline has been absent from the office for over twenty hours a week.”

Another click. Photos of me at various upscale locations appeared.

A spa. A golf course. A three-star Michelin restaurant.

“And here is a record of her squandering company funds.” Lia tossed a stack of papers onto the table. “Le Bernardin, an eight-thousand-dollar dinner. The Mandarin Oriental Spa, thirty-five hundred. And this golf club, where every visit costs over five figures.”

The room was dead silent.

It was laughable. She had no idea that my so-called "absences" were spent leveraging my family's three-generation network to woo billionaire investors for this tiny company.

Behind those outrageously expensive bills were investment deals and partnership agreements worth tens of millions of dollars.

And everyone in this room knew it.

“A total of one hundred fifty thousand dollars in improper reimbursements.” Lia’s PowerPoint reached its final slide. “I strongly urge the CEO to fire her immediately to save the company’s cash flow.”

“Only by doing this can we demonstrate our company’s strict adherence to the rules. No one will dare to break them again!”

I scanned the faces around the table. The executives I’d done countless favors for were now intensely studying their own fingernails.

David, the CFO, who had personally seen me use my Michelin-star restaurant membership, pretended to be organizing a stack of financial reports.

Mark, the Marketing Director, who had borrowed a hundred thousand dollars from me last month for a “family emergency,” was now staring down at the table in silence.

Even Sarah, whom I had promoted from junior manager to Marketing Director, was giving me a look of condemnation.

My gaze settled on Claude, my Ivy League classmate, the CEO of this company.

Three years ago, he had come to me with a half-baked PowerPoint and a dream to “change the world with technology.”

I didn’t just give him his seed money; I used my private memberships to get discounts for all of the company’s schmoozing events.

He knew the truth.

He knew the value behind every “absence.” He knew what those bills had bought us.

They secured three funding rounds of Series A, totaling $45 million, with an upcoming Series B of $80 million.

Claude slowly looked up, his eyes devoid of any guilt.

Instead, they held a detached, almost condescending judgment.

“Caroline,” his voice was all business, “what do you have to say about the absences and expenses Lia has presented?”

She cried even harder, snot and tears streaming down her face. “I know I was wrong! I really know! Please forgive me, I’ll never do it again!”I looked at her pathetic state without a shred of pity.“You know you were wrong?” I let out a soft, sharp laugh. “Do you have any idea what I gave to that company?”“I put in millions of dollars of my own money. I leveraged a decade of my family’s top-tier connections. I worked day and night for that company. And you?”I looked down at Lia kneeling on the steps, my voice growing colder.“You took my contributions for granted. You slandered me. You tried to ruin my reputation online. And now that you’ve lost your job and ruined your credit, you feel wronged?”The reporters listened, captivated, their cameras fixed on us.“You’re not wronged at all,” my voice carried clearly across the steps. “This is the price you pay for mistaking kindness for weakness.”With that, I put my sunglasses back on and walked into the courthouse, my heels clicking wi

Faced with the reporters’ relentless questions, Lia completely panicked. Her tears were no longer an act; they were real fear.“I… I can explain…” she stammered.A reporter from The Wall Street Journal was merciless. “Explain what? How you framed Miss Caroline and then stole her job and her office?”The livestream chat was now a firehose of outrage. These two are disgusting! They took her money, used her connections, and then stabbed her in the back!I sat in the café, watching the two of them squirm on the screen, and took a graceful sip of my latte.Suddenly, the basement door was thrown open.A group of people stormed in, led by a middle-aged man who pointed an angry finger at Claude.“Claude! You liar! Where’s the half-million you owe me?”More and more suppliers crowded into the small basement.“Pay up! Or we’re taking you to court!”The scene descended into chaos.Lia hid behind the table in terror while Claude was swarmed by his creditors. The livestream was still running, broad

The next afternoon, Claude and Lia went live online. The background was a bleak concrete wall. They sat behind a rickety folding table.Lia was makeup-free, her eyes puffy and red, looking utterly worn out. She choked back sobs as she spoke to the camera.“I’m just an ordinary girl, fresh out of college, trying to make my way in this cruel world. When I found out about irregularities at my company and did my duty to report them, I was met with insane retaliation from a rich, powerful executive…”The comments in the livestream scrolled by at lightning speed.I feel so bad for her! Capitalists are the worst! This is a perfect example of class oppression!Rich kids should all just disappear!I support Lia! We need to get justice for the common person!I watched the screen filled with angry messages, my expression as calm as ever.Claude played his part, his voice trembling. “We just wanted to build an honest company, but we were used and then crushed by family influence. Is this the Ameri

My phone was now flooded with messages.Claude, Lia, other employees, even the receptionist, were all calling me.Claude’s texts were the most frantic, starting with angry threats, then shifting to desperate pleas, and finally, to tearful begging.Caroline, are you insane? Do you know what you’re doing? The police are saying we’re trespassing? What does that mean? Please, make them stop! I’ll give you anything you want!We were classmates! You can’t do this to me!Caroline, I was wrong, I know I was wrong! Just let me off the hook, I’ll do anything! It seemed he knew he couldn’t reason with me and was now playing the sympathy card.Interestingly, my uncle had also moved quickly.Wellington Capital had officially and publicly announced the cancellation of all investment interest in Claude’s company. Not only that, they had blacklisted them, vowing to never work with them. With that, Claude’s company was effectively dead.Just then, Claude’s call came through again.I answered.“Caroline

Seeing Claude speechless, I turned away in disgust.“Uncle Arthur,” I said with a smile, “I’ve decided to start my own company. From now on, I have nothing to do with them.”Hearing this, a look of pride flashed in Arthur’s eyes, followed by a cold snort. He turned to Claude, his tone like ice. “Very well. I am now officially announcing that Wellington Capital is rescinding all investment interest in your company. Furthermore, I will be notifying all of my colleagues on Wall Street to add you to our permanent blacklist.”Claude’s face went completely white. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.Lia stood by, trembling. She had finally realized what a catastrophic mistake she had made.Arthur elegantly adjusted his cuffs and offered me his arm. “Niece, let’s go have lunch. I want to hear about your plans for this new company.”I took his arm and nodded. “Of course, Uncle Arthur.”Claude tried to rush forward again but was blocked by two burly bodyguards who shoved him to

I didn’t answer Claude’s question.Instead, I pushed open my car door and slowly stepped out, in full view of everyone. When Claude saw me, he thought I was there to save him.He immediately hung up and strode toward me, reaching for my arm.“Caroline! You’re finally here! Quick, tell the manager to let us…”I coolly brushed his hand away and took a step back.“Claude,” I said, my voice calm, “since you fired me, it’s only natural that my VIP card is no longer available for company use. Isn’t that just standard business logic?”The color drained from Claude’s face. “You… you can’t do this!”Lia, standing nearby, fanned the flames. She clicked over in her high heels, her tone accusatory.“Caroline, you shouldn’t let your personal feelings get in the way. This is a crucial investment for the company’s survival! How could you let a personal grudge…”“Personal grudge?” I let out a soft laugh. “Lia, who sent the company-wide email accusing me of violating attendance policies? Who said I was

The next morning, as soon as I arrived, Linda from HR walked over to me.“Caroline,” she said, her expression awkward, “I need to talk to you.”She pulled a document from her briefcase.“The company has decided to put you on a one-week observation period.” She avoided my gaze. “Your future role will

I picked up the bill and read it carefully.“Interesting,” I said with a slight laugh. “Lia, do you know what these numbers are?”Her brow furrowed, clearly not expecting my question. “What do you mean?”“These are the list prices,” I said, setting the bill down. “But I used my personal membership c

I watched Claude in silence, then let out a small, soft laugh. “What do you think?”I waited for him to make his choice. His eyes lingered on my face for three seconds before he looked away, the decision made.“Caroline, I have to say, this data is concerning.” Claude cleared his throat, his voice t
