Chapter 3

Author: Melon Latte
Serena was evidently flabbergasted by my decisiveness and laughed bitterly. "You agreed just like that? You said yes so quickly…

"What, did you have this idea all along or something? Matthew, if you already had that thought, then where did you get the nerve to accuse me just now?"

I closed my eyes and could not help but question why I had ever been with her in the first place.

When I opened my eyes again, there was nothing left but resolve. "Serena, in our entire relationship, you were the only one who threatened me with breaking up or calling off the engagement. Rather than saying I want to call it off, it's simply me fulfilling your wish, isn't it? That way, you can finally be with someone else openly, right?"

Serena's expression grew paler. "I don't know what you're talking about. Since you've agreed to call off the engagement, don't you dare regret it!"

I made a gesture for them to leave, my expression filled with undisguised mockery. "I will return that sentence to you word for word!"

Serena glared at me viciously, grabbed Dylan, and turned to leave.

At that moment, Dylan glanced back at me, his earlier fear completely gone, replaced with pure smugness in his eyes.

I did not even bother sparing him another glance and went straight to Human Resources. The first thing I did was to replace Serena.

I said, "Starting tomorrow, Serena will no longer hold this position."

Although HR staff were taken aback for a moment, seeing that I was serious, they did not dare say much and immediately began contacting replacements.

I continued, "Oh, and have the accountant come to my office. I have something to ask him."

Before long, the accountant, Lionel Bennett, arrived, trembling nervously. When he saw me, his expression turned stiff, and his voice was almost shaking.

"Mr. Grant, did… Did you need me for something?"

I already knew what was going on and got straight to the point. "You don't need to be nervous. I just want all the records of company transactions related to Dylan since he arrived."

The moment Lionel heard that, he became even more frightened. Under my questioning, he finally confessed everything Serena had done over the past year.

It turned out that during this time, Serena had either threatened him or used my name to give Dylan subsidies under various pretenses. The total amount was already close to six figures.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Grant! I'm so sorry... But Ms. Wagner said it was also your instruction, and if I didn't follow it, I'd lose my job and never survive in this city again!

"I-I recorded every transaction, every single one, just in case you'd ask me one day. They're all here!"

Lionel trembled fearfully, apologizing profusely. I looked at the documents in my hand, frowned slightly, then shook my head at him.

"Lionel, I have no intention of punishing you, but I'm only allowing this once. If this happens again, you must report it to me in advance, you hear me?"

Lionel nodded nervously. As soon as he left my office, I slammed those documents onto the desk.

This was beyond ridiculous.

What did Serena think I was, and what did she think this company was?

After the anger faded, all that remained was deep exhaustion. I leaned back in my chair and could not help recalling the years I had spent with Serena.

We had grown up together and even attended the same college. Although we had only been together for three years, I had liked her for far longer than that.

After my startup succeeded, she said she did not want me to work so hard and wanted to help. That was how she became the company's finance director.

At the beginning, she had clearly joined for my sake. How, then, had things ended up like this?

Dylan was an intern she hired. Back then, she had even complained to me that he did not know how to do anything. Somewhere along the way, though, the two of them had crossed a line.

Serena never mentioned Dylan's poor work performance again and started doing everything herself. He managed to get someone in finance to abuse company funds for his benefit.

Thinking of this, I immediately pulled out my phone and called my mother.

"Hello? Mom, could you invite the Wagners over this weekend as well? I have something to announce."

In the blink of an eye, the court date arrived.I showed up as an observer at the hearing where Serena was suing Dylan to recover her money. When questioned by the judge, Dylan–who once claimed to despise money–acted like a complete deadbeat."Serena gave all of that willingly! Why should I be responsible for it?""What? You're asking me where those things are? I don't know! My place got robbed. They were stolen, okay?""I don't have the money! Serena stole it herself. That's her problem!"He used every excuse imaginable, insisting the money was gone and refusing to repay anything. That finally made Serena see Dylan for who he really was, and she erupted in curses from the plaintiff's seat."You jerk! I bought you so many things back then, and this is how you treat me? Dylan, do you even have a conscience? I was completely wrong about you!"In the end, although Dylan faced mandatory enforcement, he still looked smug and showed zero regret over the money. As soon as we left the

"Matthew…what's the meaning of this?" Dylan's face paled as he turned back to glare at me viciously. "I don't owe you money. What right do you have to stop me?"I shrugged and laughed lightly. "You're my debtor's debtor. How could I easily let you go? You were in such a hurry to leave just now because you were afraid Serena would drag you into it, right?"The moment I said that, Serena's expression changed, too.Dylan's face twisted, and without a word, he tried to shove his way out."So what if I was? If you have the guts, take it to court. Stopping me like this is illegal detention!"He tried several times to force his way out but was pushed back in front of me every time. I looked down at him, loosened my shoulders, and stepped hard on his hand.Dylan cried out in pain and looked up at me in panic. I slowly ground my foot against the back of his hand and spoke calmly."Dylan, have I ever told you? I really...want to beat the hell out of you!"Before I had even finished speak

"What's wrong? You don't even recognize the money you've spent?"I had thoughtfully totaled every cent Serena had illegally moved, including all the luxury items she bought for Dylan with my money. The total came to 988,000 dollars, due in full within a fixed deadline.Serena shook her head frantically and threw down the file folder as if dodging some kind of dangerous threat. "I-I didn't! Those expenses had nothing to do with me! These were all legitimate expenses that followed proper procedures!"She shouted, "I didn't do this! Those expenses had nothing to do with me! They all went through proper approval!"However, the next second, HR called her phone. The call was nothing more than a notification that she had been terminated and that the company would pursue legal action in accordance with the law."I didn't! It wasn't me... This money was all..."Serena held her phone in panic, still trying to deny the lawful accusation, but the HR representative's voice was cold and unyie

Serena shouted, "That's impossible! Stop trying to drive a wedge between us!"She was already on the verge of a mental breakdown from having these intimate photos exposed. Caught off guard by what I said, she felt it was nothing but slander."Drive a wedge between you? Serena, how do you explain this?"I scoffed and immediately threw my phone onto the table, showing the chat history between Dylan and me. It was not hard to see that he had been sending me photos and videos for several days already."Dylan?" Serena looked at Dylan in shock, still unwilling to believe what was happening, yet her body began to tremble slightly.Dylan's face turned visibly pale, and he quickly retorted, "It wasn't me! Serena, he's faking this! I never sent him any of these!"Dylan chose to grit his teeth and deny everything.I mercilessly got to Dylan and said, "You sent me plenty of photos over the past few days, Dylan. You were trying to force me to break up with her, weren't you? You just didn't e

The room fell into dead silence after my announcement, and every relative from the Wagner family froze.Only Dylan was smiling faintly. After a brief shock, Serena snapped back with fury, "What did you say?! Matthew, you made such a big scene just for this?!"I shot back, "Of course. What else did you think? You really thought I'd apologize to you and your lover?"Her face twisted with rage as she shouted, "Don't you think you should apologize?! If you apologize now, I'll still marry you!"I slapped her across the face and threw a stack of photos onto the table. "After doing all these things, you think I'd still marry you?"The photos scattered, and those nearby saw them.Irene stumbled as she crouched down to pick up the photos. However, her face grew paler with each one she looked at.Still not realizing what those photos were, Serena approached Irene and asked, "Mom, what are those?"Before Serena could say more, Irene slapped her. For the next two days, Serena never showed up in front of me. She did not come to the office, nor did she come home. It was not hard to guess where she was fooling around. The employees' discussions about me grew more intense. Sometimes, just walking past was enough to spark hushed whispers."What's going on with Mr. Grant and Ms. Wagner? We haven't seen her these past two days.""Didn't you hear? Ms. Wagner doesn't work here anymore. She and that intern under her...""Really? Aren't she and Mr. Grant supposed to get married? How could she do something like that?"Hearing their speculation, I simply walked closer and smiled at them calmly. "It's exactly what you're thinking, but gossip aside, don't forget about your work."Everyone immediately apologized and returned to their workstations.I shook my head helplessly. It was not until Saturday that Serena finally appeared with Dylan. She was dressed to the nines, and it seemed she had clearly enjoyed herself these past few days.
