Chapter 2

作者: Bright Lights
My colleague, Zach Curtis, let out a sigh before offering a carefully worded warning.

"Judge Hart, you probably don't know what kind of family Scarlett comes from.

"Her great-grandfather spent his entire life doing charity work. He was featured on Time's magazine, and the respect he's earned would be carried through multiple generations.

"Her grandmother is beautiful, kind, and a true artist. She's gracious and refined, never makes enemies, but she's no pushover either.

"And her mother is a well-known entrepreneur with an impressive fortune and extensive connections in both business and politics.

"If you let your personal bias cloud your judgment and make the wrong decision, you'll hurt not just one child, but an entire family known for its integrity and sterling reputation.

"You should think this through carefully. Don't provoke public outrage."

I lowered my gaze to the photographs in the case file.

Every member of the family looked remarkably well-preserved, dressed in stylish clothes that made them seem decades younger than their actual ages.

Especially Scarlett's grandmother, the woman who had stolen my mother's identity. Though she was clearly at least sixty years old, her hair remained thick, glossy, and jet-black. Her face looked closer to forty than sixty, and she still carried herself with effortless elegance.

My mother, on the other hand, had gone completely white-haired the night before her execution.

She had been in the prime of her life, yet grief had carved deep lines across her face.

The public mocked her relentlessly. They claimed she had turned white from fear after realizing she was about to die. They hurled every cruel insult imaginable at her.

But only my father and I knew the truth.

My mother wasn't afraid. She was devastated that her own father had chosen to send his biological daughter to her execution in order to save an adopted daughter who shared none of his blood.

Even until her final breath, she never understood why.

I'd spent forty years trying to understand it myself, and I still couldn't.

But that no longer mattered.

Clearing my mother's name and bringing the guilty to justice mattered.

I'd waited forty years for that day, and at long last, it had arrived.

I closed the file. Around me, my colleagues continued praising the family, insisting they all looked like inherently good people.

I let out a cold laugh. "All I see are faces hiding behind a mask of virtue."

The room instantly fell silent.

Zach looked at me with obvious frustration. "Judge Hart, stop being so stubborn. Scarlett's family isn't one you can afford to offend.

"If she's guilty, that's one thing. But if she's innocent, can you really bear the consequences of being condemned by the entire country?"

I rose to my feet and met his gaze. "As a judge, my job is to weigh evidence, not family backgrounds.

"If anyone disagrees with my ruling, they're welcome to file a formal complaint with the appropriate oversight authorities after the case is concluded.

"But at this moment, I will not approve her acquittal."

My words rang through the room, leaving no room for further argument.

That evening, I returned home.

As soon as I reached my apartment building, I spotted a luxury car parked out front.

After the driver got out, he humbly opened the door, and two elegantly dressed women appeared before me. They were Scarlett's grandmother and her mother, Vanessa.

The woman, who called herself Florence Kane, approached me with a warm smile, dressed in a simple silk shift.

"Good evening, Judge Hart. My name is Florence Kane. I'm Scarlett's grandmother."

No.

That wasn't her name.

Florence Kane was my mother's name.

This woman was nothing more than the orphaned daughter of Grandpa's late childhood friend, Victor Meyer.

Grandpa had always valued loyalty above everything else. If Victor needed help, Grandpa would hand over the family's last scrap of food without hesitation.

How could Grandpa possibly turn his back on the poor orphan Victor had left behind?

After being exposed, Alanna flew into a rage. Pointing a finger at me, she screamed hysterically, "You're lying! Shut up!""Everything you're saying is nonsense! You're slandering me! I'll hold you accountable for this! I'm Florence! I am the real Florence Kane!"I looked at her coldly and smiled. "You don't need to tell me. I've already filed a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities regarding what happened all those years ago."Every last one of you will answer for your crimes."As the investigation moved forward, Grandpa and Alanna were taken away on the spot. The truth that had been buried for decades was finally brought to light, restoring my mother's name at long last.In the end, Alanna was convicted of intentional murder and several other crimes and sentenced to death. "You think you're worthy of calling yourself Florence Kane? You're nothing but a thief who stole someone else's life. Am I right, Alanna Meyer?"The courtroom fell instantly silent. Everyone was stunned by the name."Florence" began trembling violently."That's a lie! You're slandering me! I don't know any Alanna Meyer!"I ignored her hysterical shouting. Instead, I slowly turned toward the man sitting beside her, whose face was filled with astonishment."As for you, Tanner Kane, the celebrated philanthropist?" I curled my lips into a mocking smile."Maybe other people see you as a great man. But you're the one who sent your own daughter to her death so your late childhood friend's orphaned child could escape punishment."The color drained from Tanner's face. He slammed his hand against the table and shot to his feet."Judge! Accusations require evidence! You're making baseless allegations! Keep this up, and I'll sue you for defamation!"I looked directly into his clouded eyes

I closed the case file. Without the slightest hesitation, I delivered my verdict."The defendant, Scarlett Kane, committed intentional murder. The crime was carried out with extreme cruelty. The circumstances are especially egregious. Furthermore, she engaged in long-term bullying that caused significant social harm."This court therefore sentences Scarlett Kane to death, effective immediately."The gavel came down with a thunderous crack, and with it, the last remaining voices of doubt on the internet were silenced.Scarlett's legs gave out beneath her."No... I don't want to die! Mom... Grandma... Great-Grandpa... save me..."However, her struggle was futile. The same netizens, who had once accused me of fabricating evidence and abusing my authority, now completely reversed their stance. The comment sections were flooded with praise."Judge Hart saw through their act from the very beginning!""A monster like her deserved the death penalty a long time ago!"At the same time

"I already lured Nova here. How are you planning to punish her?"Then Scarlett's voice rang out. It was the same voice countless people had once praised as sweet and charming, but now, it carried a chilling edge of cruelty and amusement."I'm going to ask you to do me a huge favor and die. Once you're dead, she'll be the prime suspect."Evan Roth, the school heartthrob, belongs to me. She dared to sit and eat with him behind my back. This is the price she has to pay."The moment those words ended, the recording captured the sickening sound of a body hitting the ground, followed by a piercing scream. The entire courtroom exploded. The gallery erupted into chaos as gasps, curses, and angry shouts echoed through the room. Those who had been defending Scarlett only moments ago now looked horrified and disgusted.Rachel collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. At the defendant's table, Scarlett's face had gone deathly pale. In the footage, gone was the innocent, sweet-faced girl Scarlett usually pretended to be. Her face was twisted with rage as she shoved Madison off the rooftop with all her strength. The look in Madison's eyes was one of pure disbelief.Madison wasn't the only one. Standing nearby was Nova, who had just arrived at the rooftop in a fury. The moment the footage appeared on screen, the courtroom erupted. The spectators in the gallery and the viewers watching online stared in stunned disbelief."I can't believe it. She looks so sweet, but she actually murdered someone!""That look in her eyes was terrifying. She must've been hiding her true self all this time.""Oh, my God. How could Mr. Kane's family produce a great-granddaughter like this? She must've been led astray by bad influences. There's no way he knew anything about it!"In the courtroom, Madison's mother, Rachel Hale, began trembling violently. She pointed at Scarlett and screamed herself hoarse."Weren't you and my daugh

I looked up, and my steps came to an abrupt halt. The man standing there was the person most responsible for my mother's death—my grandfather, Tanner Kane.Even if I died, I would never forget that face.Whenever I encountered obstacles, whenever I felt tempted to give up, I would pull up videos of his award ceremonies and watch them over and over again.I used them to remind myself of one thing: until these hypocrites were dragged down from their pedestal and brought before the law, I could never retreat.Ahead of me, reporters surrounded him, each wearing an almost reverent expression."Mr. Kane, we didn't expect you to appear in person today. What would you like to say about this case?"Tanner let out a sigh. "Since they were young, I've always taught the children in our family to be kind and charitable. When they see someone in need, they should lend a helping hand."My great-granddaughter only got involved because she followed those teachings and tried to help a friend who
