Chapter 3 She’s Pregnant

Jessica noticed the shock on my face, and she quickly shut up. I looked at the stack of reassignment applications on the desk, and I laughed so hard, I cried.

We'd been in a long distance relationship for seven years, and I did all I could to be reassigned to the hospital near our house. I came up with a whole stack of applications, but none of them were approved.

And because I lived so far apart from my family, I hadn't been able to see Mom for the last time, and I couldn't visit her grave that frequently either.

I thought I didn't clear the reassignment requirements, but in reality, it was that man who made sure I stayed far away from him.

Jessica held up the stamp and asked one last time, "Are you sure you're going overseas? Once you do, you're there for at least five years."

I nodded, finally letting go of what hope I had left for him.

Right after coming out of the office, I heard the nurses talk among themselves. "That's Dr. Lampton's husband. Who's that pregnant woman he's holding?"

I looked in the direction of their gaze and saw Blake holding Melinda, and they were holding a pregnancy report.

Blake didn't even try to avoid me. "We came here to tell you that Melinda's pregnant."

I froze, and my whole body went cold. He then softened his voice as if he was going to persuade a child into doing what she didn't want to. "You know you can't get pregnant now. Melinda will give birth to the baby. She's your sister, and her child is yours too."

I was surprisingly calm even after that. I stared at the baby bump. "How many months along now?"

Melinda looked away in humiliation. She didn't have the courage to look at me. Blake answered for her, "Three."

"Three months…" I muttered again and again.

Three months ago, I too was pregnant, and I ran into a car crash. The rainstorm washed away all the blood. I called him again and again. All he had for me was words of regret mixed with his sobs.

"I can't leave. Besides, I can't get there in time anyway, but I'll call the cops for you."

After that, the doctor said I could never have children of my own, while Blake got her pregnant at the same time.

My hand found my belly. It was flat and decorated with a wound. The pain nearly made me curl.

Melinda held me, and she was crying. "That was an accident! He got drunk and thought I was you. Please, don't get a divorce just because I'm pregnant."

I leaned against the wall and flung her hand away.

It wasn't even a powerful fling, but Blake panicked and grabbed my wrist. "Don't vent at her! She's pregnant!" His eyes were filled with rage.

He had never gotten mad at me, not even once. Now he was, and for the one I hated most. I laughed bitterly and took out the divorce papers from my bag. "If you worry about her that much, then sign this."

Blake froze.

He frowned and was about to say something, but Melinda somehow had gotten a knife. She went on her knees and cried, "If you hate me and my baby that much, kill us!"

She held my hand in a vice grip, and I couldn't break free. "Let go! Are you mad?"

She held the knife through my hand and stabbed it right at her belly.
