Chapter Eighty-Two

Kael’s POV

The council chamber still smelled faintly of smoke and tension. Even after everyone had left, the air felt thick like the walls themselves had been listening.

I sat in the high-backed chair at the end of the long table, staring at the place where Liana had stood earlier. She had spoken too freely today, and every man in this room had noticed.

I could see it in their faces the whispers behind their eyes, the doubt she had planted without meaning to.

She didn’t understand what that kind of display could cost her.

Or maybe she did, and she was testing me.

Either way, it was dangerous.

The door creaked open, and Commander Rowan entered. His armour caught the light, reflecting a muted shine across the table. His steps were steady, measured, as if he knew the weight of whatever waited in my silence.

“You asked for me, Your Majesty.”

I nodded. “Close the door.”

He did. The sound of it shutting felt final. The echo carried for a few seconds before dying out, lea

  • The King’s Relentless Desire     His Pursuit

Chapter Ninety-Six Kael’s POV The message reached me just before dawn. A rider, exhausted, his horse foam-drenched and trembling, slid from the saddle before the guards could even speak. Dirt streaked his clothes. His breaths came short and broken. He didn’t have to say her name. I saw it in his face. He bowed once, chest heaving, voice scraping out like gravel. “They took her. On the northern road.” The world did not go quiet. It sharpened. I stood up from the council table without a word. The generals called after me. Voices rose. Advisers moved to intercept. Someone reached for my arm. I looked at him once and he stepped away. The air in the hall felt thin and useless. The walls too close. The floor too steady beneath my feet when everything inside me was already moving. The stable doors were thrown open before I even reached them. My horse was saddled. I do not remember giving the order. I pulled myself onto the saddle, grip tight on the reins. The stallion shifte

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Road

Chapter Ninety-Five Liana’s POV The night air was colder than I expected. The kind of cold that slips through layers of fabric and settles against your skin, no matter how tightly you wrap your cloak around your shoulders. I sat in the back of the small covered wagon, knees tucked close, hands resting against the wood beside me. The wheels rattled softly beneath us, steady but uneven, the road a mixture of packed dirt and scattered stone. We had been travelling for hours. The driver did not speak much. He was older, quiet, with lines carved deep into his face from years of sun and dust. He kept his eyes forward, watching the road as though it might shift beneath us at any moment. The guard riding beside us did not speak either. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword too often for it to be a habit. Something felt wrong. Not loud or obvious. Just a small, constant pressure behind my ribs. A tightness. The kind of feeling you notice only when the quiet stretches too long.

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Vacancy

Chapter Ninety-Four Kael’s POV The chamber door closed behind Serene and the silence that followed wasn’t empty. It was loud. Heavy. Full of something I didn’t want to name. Arin didn’t move. He stood at the far end of the table, hands behind his back, watching me the way a man watches a fire — knowing it can spread if wind touches it wrong. I stayed still for a moment, breathing slow, steady, controlled. The kind of control that isn’t calm the kind that comes from holding too much back. I pushed off the table and walked toward the window. The city stretched far below the balcony. Lanterns flickered across rooftops. Smoke rose from the late bakeries and the taverns in the upper market were still full. Life continued. Even though she was gone. I thought it would feel cleaner. Easier. Like removing a blade before it cuts too deeply. Instead, it felt like the wound was open now. Exposed. Breathing. Arin stepped closer. Not enough to stand beside me — he knew better than

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Road Between Us

Chapter Ninety-Three Liana’s POV The sky was bleeding into twilight when the gates closed behind us. The sound was heavy metal scraping against stone and it echoed in my chest like something final. Captain Rion rode ahead, his posture straight, his armour catching what little light remained. The escort followed in silence, their horses’ hooves dull against the dirt path leading away from the castle. I kept my eyes forward, but every turn of the road made the distance between me and Kael feel sharper. The air was colder outside the city walls. The smell of the fields — damp earth, wild grass, smoke from a distant village mixed with the fading scent of my perfume. I could still taste him on the back of my tongue. I hated that. I hated that even now, he was still under my skin. For a long time, no one spoke. Rion’s voice finally broke through the quiet. “We’ll stop at the ridge by nightfall, my lady. It’s safer to rest where the cliffs overlook the river.” I nodded. “And then?”

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    What He Didn’t Say

Chapter Ninety-Two Liana’s POV The air in the chamber didn’t move after he spoke. It was as if the world had gone still around us — the banners unmoving, the light slanting through the windows without warmth, and the silence caught like a knot between us. He was still close. Too close. His fingers had just brushed my wrist, but it was enough to leave my pulse running wild beneath my skin. I couldn’t look away from him, not when his eyes were that steady, that unreadable. “What happens if I refuse?” I asked quietly. Kael didn’t blink. “You won’t.” It wasn’t arrogance. It was certain. The kind that came from knowing exactly how much control he had — not over the court, not over the council, but over me. And he was right. I wouldn’t refuse. Not because he commanded it, but because I couldn’t. Because even when I hated him for it, some part of me wanted to see how far he’d push me. His gaze lowered briefly to my mouth, and I knew he remembered too. The night before. The silence

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    Pale Morning

Chapter Ninety-One Liana’s POV The first light came through the curtains in pale strips. I hadn’t really slept. My body had drifted between moments of half-dream and half-memory, every one of them touched by him. By his voice. By the sound of the door closing when he left. The fire was out. The air was cool now, heavy with the scent of smoke and him. I sat up slowly, pulling the blanket tighter around me. The silence felt like it was still holding him. My throat was dry. I stood and crossed to the basin by the window, pouring water that felt too cold against my skin. My reflection in the glass above it looked like someone else. My eyes were darker, my mouth set in a line that didn’t belong to me. I told myself to breathe. To stop thinking about the way his breath had brushed my ear, or how his words had felt like something more than a warning. There was a knock on the door. I froze. It wasn’t him. I knew that before I even answered. “My lady?” It was one of the servants. “T
