Chapter Forty-eight

Liana’s POV

The sound of the great doors opening was louder than I remembered.

It rolled through the hall like thunder, and every head turned.

For a moment, I couldn’t move. The air inside the throne room was heavy with perfume, gold light, and too many eyes. My heart beat against my ribs so hard I thought it would break through.

The red dress clung to my skin, just as it had in the garden. It caught the glow from the torches, making it look brighter, sharper, like a flame that refused to die.

I could feel them looking. The lords, the ladies, their jewelled faces turned toward me in open curiosity. I walked forward, one step at a time, every movement careful, measured, as though the floor might crumble beneath me if I faltered.

Each sound echoed. The silk brushes against stone. The faint clink of bracelets on my wrist. The tremor in my breath.

Kael was already seated on his throne.

He looked at me as though he had been waiting. The expression on his face was unrea

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Morning After

Chapter Sixty-SevenLiana’s POVThe first light of morning slipped through the curtains, soft and pale, brushing against my face like it wanted to wake me gently.I hadn’t really slept. The night had stretched on forever, filled with memories I didn’t want to relive the sound of his voice, the feel of that ribbon between my fingers, the way my body had betrayed me even as my mind screamed to resist. The red silk still lay on the table where I’d left it.It caught the sunlight now, glowing faintly, mocking me with its quiet beauty.I sat up slowly. My head ached. My throat felt dry. The air in the room was heavy with the faint scent of smoke and wine from the feast. I ran my hand through my tangled hair and tried to breathe. The knock came before I could rise.Soft. Steady. Familiar. My chest tightened.I knew that sound too well. The door opened before I could answer, and he stepped inside as if the space already belonged to him.Kael.The King.He looked like he hadn’t slept either,

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    After He Left

Chapter Sixty-SixLiana’s POVThe feast ended hours ago.The music had faded, the laughter gone. The candles had burned low, their flames trembling against the walls like they were afraid of the dark.I sat alone in my chambers, still wearing the red gown. The silk was wrinkled now, the hem stained faintly with wine where someone had brushed past me. My hair had fallen loose from its pins. My lips still felt dry from where I’d bitten them to keep from speaking. The silence was heavy. It filled every corner of the room, thick and sharp, pressing against my chest. I could still hear the echo of his voice the way he said my name before the court, the way he leaned close enough for only me to hear his words. He had done it again.Without touching me beyond what was seen, without a single threat, he had made me yield in front of them all.I hated how easily he did it. I hated that part of me that wanted him to.My reflection in the mirror looked like someone else someone I didn’t trust. My

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    Obedience

Chapter Sixty-FiveLiana’s POVThe hall was alive with gold and sound. The long tables shimmered beneath candlelight, their polished wood covered in silver platters and crystal goblets. The air smelled of roasted meat, honeyed wine, and warm bread. Laughter rippled across the room in soft waves, rising from nobles dressed in silks brighter than the jewels around their throats. And at the far end, on the raised dais, he sat.King Kael. His gaze found me the instant I entered.I felt it before I even looked up, like a touch across my skin that burned hotter than the torches lining the walls. My steps faltered for just a heartbeat, but I forced myself forward. Every sound around me seemed to fade until all that was left was the slow rhythm of his stare following me through the crowd.I wore the red gown he’d chosen. It clung to my body like liquid flame, the silk whispering against my legs as I walked. The neckline dipped lower than I would have dared before. My hair was pinned up with g

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    Between Us

Chapter Sixty-FourLiana’s POVThe silence in the room felt heavy, almost alive. The air was thick with the scent of smoke and polished wood, the faint sweetness of wine that lingered from the night before. I stood near the tall window, fingers resting on the cold glass as I looked out at the courtyard below. Servants moved like shadows between the stone paths, quiet and efficient. Somewhere, a bell rang, marking the hour. But the sound barely reached me.All I could feel was the space behind me — the weight of it, the quiet awareness that I wasn’t alone. He had been watching me for a while now.I didn’t have to turn to know it.His presence filled the room the way heat fills a closed space, invisible but impossible to ignore. My heart had learned the rhythm of it, the way my body tensed before I even heard his steps, as if it already knew what was coming.“Still pretending not to hear me, Liana?”His voice was soft, low, but it slid through the quiet like a blade.I turned slowly, tr

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    His Restraint

Chapter Sixty-ThreeLiana’s POVI didn’t sleep that night. The silence after he left felt heavier than his presence had. It filled every corner of the room, pressing down on me until my chest hurt. I stayed where I was, the fire dimming slowly, my body cold but my skin still burning where his gaze had lingered. He hadn’t touched me.And somehow that was worse. It was the kind of denial that felt like a wound, deep and quiet and impossible to soothe.By the time the first light of dawn slipped through the curtains, I was still awake, still tracing the ghost of his voice in my mind every word, every pause, every breath he didn’t take near enough to mine.I bathed slowly, trying to wash the tension from my body. The water was warm, but it did nothing to ease the ache beneath my ribs. When I stepped out, the mirror was fogged, and I could barely see my reflection. Maybe that was better.I dressed in a soft ivory gown, simple but clean, my hair falling loose over my shoulders. Maren had a
