AURORA

I spent the next three days trying to act normal and failing at it.

Every time someone looked at me for too long, my stomach flipped. The guard at the garden gate. The cook who gave me extra bread. Even Josie, who was only trying to see if I wanted tea. I kept waiting for somebody to whisper. To squint at me. To say it out loud: she must have been with someone else. Or worse, she's a whore who’s lying about all of it.

I knew how it looked. A pregnant woman showed up not looking visibly p

  • The Kingslayer’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 69

ROMANAt the Gap, the fight was ugly.I’d been in a lot of battles. I knew how a fight felt. People got scared. They flinched. They backed up when they got hurt, screamed, or ran. That was how you knew where the line was.The Council’s soldiers didn’t do any of that.A man with a broken arm kept swinging his sword. A woman took a blade in the stomach, looked down at it, and kept walking forward like it was nothing but a splinter. A boy who couldn’t have been older than seventeen came at me with an empty face, and when I knocked him down, he just got up and came at me again. My stomach turned over. These people didn’t even seem to feel it.“Take prisoners!” I roared over the noise. “Don’t kill them if you can help it! They’re being used!”It was almost impossible. How could you take a prisoner who wouldn’t stop? My wolves tried. I saw them pinning arms, knocking out legs, and tying hands with whatever they had. But for every one they dropped, two more took their place.A man twice my s

AURORAFrom the top of the wall, I watched the army march, and it was the worst thing I’d ever seen.I’d seen fights. This wasn’t like that. This was thousands of men and women moving like one body. Their boots hit the ground at the same time. Their faces were blank and empty. No one was yelling. No one was laughing, scared, or even breathing hard.It was like watching a wave come in.“They’re not even blinking,” Josie whispered next to me. She’d refused to go inside. Her neck still had a bandage around it. “That’s so creepy, Aurora.”“I know.”“Do you think Thomas is okay?” Josie asked.“Hannah says he’s sleeping. He’ll be fine.”“And you?”“I’m fine.”Josie gave me a look. “Your nose is still bleeding, Aurora.”I touched it. She was right. I wiped it on my sleeve and tried to laugh. “Okay. Maybe I’m a little fine.”Roman came up behind us. He didn’t say anything for a moment. Then he turned me around by the shoulders and took my face in both his hands. He’d changed into his fighting

ROMANI told her no multiple times. The first time was on the wall, right after Thomas was taken to the hospital. The second time was in the hallway, when she wiped the blood off her face with her sleeve and said, “We have to check everybody.” The third time was in my study, with the door shut, when I stood in front of her like a fool and said, “Aurora, I can’t let you do this.”She just looked at me. Her eyes were red, there was dried blood under her nose, and her hands were still trembling a little.“Then tell me another way,” she said.I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.I’d been going over it in my head for an hour. I could lock up every southern wolf in the dungeon. But there were forty of them, and half of them were teenagers, or moms, or old men who’d lived here for many years. They hadn’t done anything. And if I locked them up, what then? The horn would still sound. They’d still be moved like puppets, and I’d have forty people trapped in cells with no way to defend themse

AURORA“Open the east gate.”Thomas said it in a flat voice, like he was reading it off a card. It didn’t sound like him at all. The Thomas I knew stammered and turned red when I said thank you for tea.“Thomas,” Roman said firmly. “Put the knife down.”“Open the east gate.” He said the same words in the same flat voice. The blade was all the way out now, shining in the gray morning light. The guards on the wall had gone quiet. A few of them had their hands on their weapons. Somebody behind me was breathing hard. My heart was banging so loud I thought everyone could hear it.“Okay,” I said, holding my hands out like he was a scared animal. “Okay, Thomas. Let’s just talk.”That was when I heard a voice from behind me.“Aurora? I brought breakfast. You didn’t eat anything last night, and Dr. Bryn said you have to...”Josie. Oh no. No, no, no.She came around the corner of the tower with a tray in her hands. Oatmeal, toast, a mug of something hot. Her hair was a mess, like she’d run up t

AURORAI watched from the top of the wall with my hands gripping the stone really hard. From up there, I could see the whole road. Behind Graves, the hills were covered in smoke from Council campfires. In front of him stood the gates of Ravenwood. And right in the middle was one old man leaning on a cane, smiling up at us like he’d come to deliver a pie.I hated him already. I didn’t know why. But my skin was crawling.“I’ll be brief,” Graves called. His voice was soft and warm, as it boomed all over the whole place. “The Council wants no bloodshed, Alpha Thornfield. None at all. I want that to be very clear. No one has to die today.”“That’s a nice thing to say with four thousand wolves behind you,” Roman answered.“They’re only here to keep the peace.” Graves chuckled, like Roman had told a good joke. “Here’s what I propose. Hand over the girl, and everything is forgiven. The kidnapping. The attack on Silverlake. All of it. We’ll call it a misunderstanding and go home.”“Her name is

ROMANThe map room had never felt so small. It was a round room with one long table and a big map of Ravenwood. Fifteen of my best men stood around it. Nobody was talking. They were all staring at the same thing: a dozen little black markers lined up on the northern ridge, close enough to almost touch the valley.“Say it again,” I told the scout. He cleared his throat. He was a young man, barely twenty. His hands were shaking. “They are at least four thousand, Alpha. Maybe more. They came from five different Council-affiliated packs.”“Which ones?”“Kessler. Dunmore. Brandt. And two smaller ones I don’t know.” He swallowed. “They’ve got trucks and a lot of supplies. A few of them brought tents.”“Tents,” Gideon repeated. “They brought tents. That means they plan to stay a while.”“Thank you, Gideon.”I looked at the table again. Ravenwood had nine hundred fighters. That was everything. Every man and woman old enough to fight, and a few I wished weren’t. Nine hundred against four thous
