MasukCHARLOTTE’S POINT OF VIEW.
It’s as if someone doused me in cold water. My eyes are wide, my panties are drenched, my hair’s probably a mess, along with my heart. I pushed myself away from him, as his body burned me, and it probably does…, but with something so deliciously addictive, it hits me with surprise because no one has ever riled me up so much. Just then, the red curtains are pulled back to reveal a smiling Richards, who pauses at the sight of us, probably sensing how odd we are. Adonis still has his stare on me, even though I am all but pleading with him using my eyes to stop it. But he does not stop. “Um…I came here to inform you that the team has decided to push the event to the next two hours. A few things are still being set up at the moment.” Adonis nods, his narrowed, heated stare still on me. Just then, Richards looks at both of us again, scratching the back of his head. “Is everything okay?” This time, I speak. “Of course it is…why wouldn’t it be?” Richards does not look convinced. His eyes flick from my swollen lips, my lopsided shirt, the messy hair my once perfectly curled hair is now, and the way Adonis’ chest was still heaving with heavy, ragged breaths. The tension in the booth is so thick, so sharp, it feels like one flick of a match, and the place will be engulfed in flames. He scratches the back of his head again, clearly not convinced. “Alright then….i’ll…..I guess I’ll leave you two to it, then.” I nodded, giving him as much of an unfazed smile as possible. The moment he walks out, Adonis wheels himself to me, once again surprising me with the fact that he’s paralyzed. Lucas never spoke about his brother. Well, I didn’t ask either, but it was still a shock. “I…I have to go.” I couldn’t look at him anymore. I dashed out of the booth, running and not stopping until I was sure I’d run far enough from him. THIRTY MINUTES LATER. “Charlotte!” The frantic voice of Maria finds me while I’m seated on one of the lone benches in the private park the company booked for the event. Her wide eyes stare at me once they find me, her chest heaving with heavy breaths. “What is it?’ I gasped, my eyes snapping open, wondering how the hell I fell asleep. “There you are!” she grabs me without another word. “You need to come with me, right now.” With that, she drags me over to the part of the park labeled ‘FOR IMPORTANT OFFICIALS ONLY.’ “Wait…this is the booth for the executives. Why are you taking me in there?’ I gasped, terror gripping me. “Am…I fired?” I gasped again, afraid my stupid act of kissing the boss would get me fired from here. shit....CHARLOTTE!! “Fired…no….although, it might be much worse.” She grimaced, pulling me in without another word. I am met with the surprised, but smiling faces of everyone in there: Adonis’ grandmother, the board from yesterday, Mr. Richards, and Adonis. Once I’m in, his gaze finds me, the same amount of anger and annoyance from yesterday back in there. What the heck happened? His grandmother walks to me with a very bright smile that could light up a town, her wrinkled hands finding mine. “Oh, dear child…you are a godsend!” she all but giggles. “I am so happy my son hired you.” I blinked, my mind still hazy from both the kiss and my drowsy escape to the secluded bench spot. “I…don’t understand…what happened? Has the event happened already?” “No, it hasn’t....and it doesn’t even have to anymore.” Maria giggles beside me. “I….dont…” “I understand, child.” She turns to Maria. “Please, show her.” Maria pulls me to a television, and I nearly fall in my steps. My face, along with Adonis’s, is plastered all over it on the news, but that isn’t what makes me stop; it’s the headlines and the playing video… On the screen is the video of Adonis and me from earlier; our kiss is all over the news, the way it happened, the way he held onto me, the angry clash of our lips, and the words. ‘IS THE THORNEWOOD BILLIONAIRE HEIR FINALLY OUT OF THE CLOSET? OR WAS HE NEVER IN IT? WHO IS THE BEAUTY HE SEEMS TO HAVE HIS TONGUE DOWN HER THROAT? WE ARE ALL EAGER TO FIND OUT, AND ARE WAITING FOR THE COMPANY TO SHED LIGHT ON THIS MATTER.’CHARLOTTE’S POINT OF VIEW.“One word.” The host repeats, her smile sharp with anticipation. “Both of you….describe that kiss.” The silence between us stretched thick and heavy. The audience leaned forward, eyes bright with attention. Every camera in the arena zooms in, making me feel even deeper. Every eye, every expectation, every judgement pressing down on me. My fingers twitch in his, his grip tightens against mine.I can hear my voice bite back at me… say something. Don’t freeze….“Unexpected,” I said finally, nearly wincing at the knotting of my throat the second the word escaped my lips. The host hums, clearly amused at my answer. “Interesting.” Of course it is……it grossed over a million views in fifteen minutes! Her gaze slides to him. “And you, Adonis?” There’s a long, deliberate pause. Everyone holds their breath, including me.For some reason, I expect him to say something terrible about me. The kiss was a waste of time. I wish I could scour my lips clean… anything to leav
CHARLOTTE’S POINT OF VIEW“So,” the host leans forward, eyes gleaming under the bright studio lights. “Is it true? Were you two really hiding a relationship all this time?”I feel and see every camera zoom in, every breath in the room stills. My pulse pounds so loudly, so wildly, I’m sure the microphones will pick it up.”Don’t freezeDon’t mess this up…..I almost chant it like a mantra in my mind until it turns into a song. His fingers tighten around mine, just slightly.Play your part…..I let out a soft laugh, tilting my head just enough to look shy… but not weak.“We weren’t hiding,” I say smoothly. “We were just…..careful.” A ripple runs through the audience. The host gasps lightly. “Careful? That sounds serious.”“It is,” I reply, tucking an unruly strand of hair behind my ear. And for a split second, I almost believe my words. The host’s smile widens, “Tell us how it started…….people are dying to know.”Of course they are……they always are. We’re in Vegas after all.I glance at
CHARLOTTE’S POINT OF VIEW. They don’t give me time to think. Hands are on me the moment I step out of the tent. “Sit, quickly!” “Fix her hair…..no……not like that. We need a style that makes everyone pause.” “Lipstick. Someone get the lipstick!” “We need a natural glam! She’s the girlfriend of our boss; this was released on Valentine’s Day…..what makeup do you think she would wear?” I am stretched, prodded, and pulled in so many directions, I’m barely able to think. I blink as I’m pushed into a chair, lights flashing in my eyes, voices overlapping again. Someone is tugging at my hair, another at my shirt, fingers brushing against my face like I’m something being prepared for display. Right now, I’m not a person…. I'm a product. Something we need to sell to the general public… a love story that can leave little girls dreaming at night. Passion that makes the earth quake. “Stop moving,” a woman snaps, tilting my chin upward. “If you smear this, we’ll have to start over.” “I d
CHARLOTTE’S POINT OF VIEW.The room hasn’t settled. If anything, it’s gotten worse. Pictures and images of my ex-boyfriends and former friends from high school are plastered across the screen, along with so-called comments from them about my character. The voices overlap in the rent, mixing with the sound of ringing phones and screens updating faster than I can process. My name is still there; my face, my life…….my adoption history; spread out in the open for all to see.“This complicates things.” I heard them speak again.“We need damage control, now.”“Someone get hair and make up.”I can’t breathe. I’m still staring at the screen before it changes again. It’s another alert……..another breaking headline. And then, I see the last Face id ever want.Lucas.My stomach drops so violently, I have to grab the edge of the table to steady myself.“No…” I whisper. The video is playing. He looks perfect… not even the least bit frazzled at the fact that he cheated on me. The fact that I haven’
CHARLOTTE'S POINT OF VIEW. The room erupts immediately, but not in shock. Their celebratory cheers ring out until the tent shakes. On the other hand, all I can do is watch the scene with wide eyes. “Do you see those numbers?” one of the board members exclaims, practically vibrating where he stands. “This is insane, absolutely insane!” “Our engagements just tripled. No, quadrupled in the last ten minutes!” “The comments, look at the comments!” I can’t move. My eyes stay glued to the screen as the video plays again. And again. And again. His hand gripping my waist, my fingers tangled in his shirt, our mouths...... God. My stomach twists violently. That didn’t feel like this; that didn’t feel like something meant for the world to see... hell, it shouldn't have even happened in the first place. But that's the thing with Adonis; barely 24 hours after meeting this man, I have kissed him on live television. A low laugh cuts through the noise. “Perfect,” one of the exe
