Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
The ninety-eighth time, she indulged him after he killed our child.

The ninety-ninth time, she indulged him and helped him evade justice.

Vivian Blake really had only one chance left.

The exhaust dust pulled me back to reality.

Caleb once said he could only sit in the passenger seat, and he only didn't get carsick when Vivian drove.

"Then let's use one chance. You can take a cab anyway."

Ever since I nodded that time, Vivian's car had become his private ride. She no longer needed to ask me even once.

I took a cab back to the hospital.

I'd injured my arm saving Vivian from the car.

The doctor had told me not to leave the hospital casually, or the wound might get infected badly enough to require amputation.

But I dragged my injured body into court anyway.

In return, I got this.

Just as I reached the hospital entrance, someone stopped me.

"Ms. Blake instructed us that, to avoid any exposure and reduce public pressure, you... may not continue recovering here. The entire hospital is now serving Mr. Caleb Quinn alone while he receives treatment for depression."

My injured arm trembled with pain. I stood there, stunned.

This was Vivian's private hospital, open twenty-four hours a day.

Yet it couldn't spare me a bed for three days.

From one of the rooms, I heard Caleb and Vivian laughing and messing around.

"You promised I'd only stay one day. Liar, liar."

"Who're you calling a liar? Hm?"

More laughter followed.

I met the staff member's embarrassed eyes, then turned to leave.

But Vivian tapped on the window and poked her head out.

"Nathan, I'll be staying here with Caleb. Tomorrow morning, make the plain meatballs he likes, and the lean pork porridge I like.

"And whatever you like... just make that too."

Before I could answer, the window slammed shut.

Sweat gathered on my forehead, but my whole body felt cold.

I couldn't bear to listen to the laughter anymore, so I limped into a cab and went to the public hospital to get medication.

By the time I got home, it was past five in the morning.

I opened the notebook dedicated to our agreement and recorded the two betrayals.

To be honest, the agreement had started as a joke between us.

I never imagined the day would really come when the tally filled up this much.

After writing them down one by one, I called my father.

"My good son, you've finally agreed to study at law school abroad?"

I had graduated in law too.

But Vivian knew how hard this career was, and she was afraid I'd suffer, so she refused to let me become a lawyer.

She said that as my wife, she'd always fight for justice for me.

I gambled my career on her.

Only now did I realize I'd lost that bet.

"Yeah.

"And I'll overturn the case myself. I'm also getting a divorce."

My father didn't sound surprised. He only sounded disappointed in me.

"I told you a long time ago that girl's ridiculous agreement shouldn't have been accepted in the first place. But you've already used them all up?"

I swallowed a painkiller with difficulty and pressed my lips together.

"Almost."

As soon as I said that, Vivian's puzzled voice came from behind me.

"What's almost?"

I hung up calmly and pointed to the rice porridge bubbling in the pot.

"The porridge is almost ready. Go eat."

Vivian didn't say much. Her gaze landed on the painkillers on the table, and her brows shifted.

"Don't take it personally that I didn't let you stay in the hospital."

Then she handed me a paper bag.

"I shouldn't have asked you to cook porridge today either. It's our anniversary. I didn't forget."

My head snapped up.

Every year on our anniversary, Vivian would never fail to give me a gift and cook for me herself.

"Caleb, what nonsense are you saying? When did I ever say I loved you?"Even if you hadn't exposed my perjury in court, I would've turned myself in. I did all of this for Nathan. What are you?"Hearing Vivian's voice, Caleb seemed to grasp a lifeline and began sobbing loudly."Vivian, I really know I was wrong. I only exposed your perjury because I panicked. Please save me, okay? I'm living worse than death in here..."Caleb had been pampered by Vivian for so long that he'd gotten used to relying on her for everything. He had never truly suffered in his life.I just hadn't expected him to be this naive and ridiculous.Vivian clenched her fists. Her knuckles whitened around the phone."Why would you think I'd save you? I'm the one who sent you in."She looked at me with a flattering gaze, then continued, "I'll make sure someone takes good care of you. Only then will Nathan be able to vent his anger."The moment she finished, desperate pleading came through the phone."Vivian,

I laughed, speechless."You say you don't want to play, and that's it? What do you take me for?"No matter what, I'm divorcing you. You're the one at fault, but I don't want a cent from you. I only want the divorce."Vivian lowered her eyes and buried her head deeply."I know it's too late to say anything now, but I haven't been able to sleep these days. Without you at home, my whole body feels empty..."The class bell rang before she could finish.I said directly, "That has nothing to do with me. Sign it as soon as possible."With that, I turned and went back into the building for class.I wasn't too worried that she would cling to me for long. No matter how much she could delay, she couldn't delay forever. That afternoon, my mentor took us to court for field observation. After we sat down, I discovered Vivian was there too. Before the session began, the room buzzed with discussion."Isn't that Vivian Blake? The one who committed perjury for her lover and abandoned her hus

If I hadn't listened to Vivian back then, I probably would've graduated long ago and become a lawyer. After submitting my materials, my father called."Don't worry. I've arranged everything for you. Focus on your career from now on. From now on, our family and the Blake family have nothing to do with each other."My father said exactly what was in my heart.Giving up my career for love had been the least worthwhile thing I'd ever done.Fortunately, it wasn't too late. After I hung up, my domestic attorney sent me a message:For some reason, Vivian Blake has assigned a lawyer to reopen Caleb Quinn's unlicensed driving and hit-and-run case. Sentencing is already underway, so we probably don't need to spend much effort on that part.To be honest, I'd never imagined Vivian would personally send Caleb to prison.Once, she had been willing to gamble her entire future to help him evade punishment. Now that the two of them were at each other's throats, it was hard to understand.I r

The Reed family wasn't short of money. Now, it wasn't short of her as a wife either.Seeing Vivian cry miserably, the housekeeper hurried to comfort her."Ms. Blake, honestly, Mr. Reed shouldn't have asked for a divorce. This morning, I saw the gift he bought you for your sixth anniversary..."Vivian walked into the villa and saw the gift the housekeeper mentioned.Inside was a scarf I had knitted by hand.Last year's scarf is old. Don't force yourself to wear it anymore.Even though we'd argued before, I had still prepared her gift with care. And what about her?She had given me several pairs of Caleb's worn underwear.Only then did Vivian realize it couldn't have been a prank.Unless Caleb had put the underwear inside himself to humiliate me.Just then, the doorbell rang.Caleb rushed in, crying pitifully."Vivian, what did you mean earlier? I really can't go to jail..."I really do have depression. I'm so scared when you get angry at me..."As he spoke, he threw hims

But she waited in the car for a long time and didn't get a reply. Before she knew it, a powerful unease took over her heart.Vivian drove home in a panic. The moment she opened the door, she began apologizing."Nathan, I really didn't know Caleb framed you on purpose. I was wrong earlier. I'll apologize to you, okay? Let's just erase the hundredth time."She stopped and fell silent. There was no sound in the villa.Step by step, she went upstairs, coaxing as she walked."Honey, I was really wrong this time. I didn't know Caleb would do something so filthy. I swear I'll never see him again. Forgive me, okay?"By then, she'd reached the bedroom door. She pushed it open carefully, wearing a pleading smile."Nath..."When she saw the empty room, the smile on her face slowly vanished. Her heart skipped a beat."Nathan?"Everything that belonged to me had been moved out.The wedding photo that used to hang over the bed had also been removed, leaving a blank patch on the wall.

  • The Last Chance   Chapter 5

Vivian's terrified gaze froze on the screen.Used up?She zoomed in on the photo I sent again and again. The notebook clearly read:The one hundredth time: Vivian Blake told me to apologize to Caleb Quinn, when I truly hadn't done anything. The previous ninety-nine times flashed through her mind like a storm, almost splitting her head open.If I'd truly been wrong this time, then the one hundredth chance wouldn't count.Thinking that, Vivian seemed to seize the last straw. She grabbed one of the men by the collar and questioned him with red eyes."Tell me. Did Nathan really order you?"The men were frightened and afraid she'd call the police, so they stammered the truth."It... it really wasn't Mr. Reed. Mr. Quinn hired us to act. Three hundred each."Vivian slowly let him go, but the fire in her eyes burned hotter. At that moment, Caleb, who'd been pretending to be ill and in pain, was standing perfectly fine at the ward door."Viv... Vivian, it's not what you heard. How c

I turned to leave, but Vivian snapped at me."Nathan, I don't want to fight with you today. Fine. We'll use one chance."With the certainty of someone who had already won, she ordered, "Come here and apologize to Caleb."The moment I heard her, my steps stopped completely.Vivian repeated calmly

I'd thought everything would change after Caleb appeared. But seeing that familiar gift bag, my eyes reddened uselessly, and my vision blurred.Just as I clung greedily to that brief moment, Vivian's phone rang. She hurriedly let go of the bag.The things inside spilled out.My mouth twitched.
