Chapter 4

作者: Sherry Marshmallow
The shrill alarm tore through everyone's nerves.

“Doctor! He's stopped breathing! Save him!”

Michael threw himself beside the stretcher and let out a cry of pure despair.

Michelle's eyes rolled back, and she collapsed on the spot.

Several of the city's elite rushed to catch her as panic spread through the room.

The livestream comments exploded.

The screen was flooded with a wall of vicious messages.

“This woman deserves to rot in hell! She's a murderer!”

“Lock her up!”

Jason's radio suddenly crackled to life.

A furious voice roared through the speaker.

“Jason Watson! What the hell is going on?

“Are you really going to let millions of people watch a hero die?

“I don't care what it takes! Have her start treatment within five minutes! If anything goes wrong, I'll take full responsibility!”

Michael finally snapped.

His eyes turned bloodshot as he pressed the barrel of his gun against my temple.

“Ashley Cross, this is your last chance.”

His voice was hoarse with desperation.

“Save him right now, or I'll make sure you never set foot in Rivergate again.”

Several of the tough-looking men surged forward at once.

They wrenched my arms behind my back and pinned me against the edge of the treatment table.

A group of bodyguards lifted the stretcher and forcibly moved Samuel's blood-soaked body onto the table.

He was less than two feet away from me.

The overpowering stench of blood and burned flesh filled my lungs.

Then, lying on the table, Samuel's bloodstained eyes slowly cracked open.

His charred, split lips moved weakly.

“Dr. Cross... Don't force yourself...

“My life... isn't worth saving...”

Several family members of the patients broke down in tears on the spot.

Even Jason, a man known for his iron resolve, had tears in his eyes.

The female reporter's voice trembled with emotion.

“Viewers, this is the kind of hero Samuel Hall is.

“Even in his final moments, he's still thinking of others.”

I was pinned against the treatment table.

My chest rose and fell sharply as deep purple bruises formed around my wrists.

The set of Ghost Gate Needles lay scattered less than an inch from my fingertips.

The entire city was pressuring me.

Public opinion became a tidal wave.

I looked at the outraged faces around me.

I looked at Michelle, who had regained consciousness and was now sobbing hysterically.

Then I looked at the dying hero lying on the treatment table.

Suddenly, I laughed.

The laughter grew louder and louder.

“Let me go.”

With a violent jerk, I broke free from their grip and snatched the Ghost Gate Needles from the table.

The entire room fell silent.

Even the livestream comments seemed to freeze for a moment.

Everyone stared at me, terrified that I might destroy the needles in the next second.

I held the Soulbinding Needle between my fingers and slowly swept my gaze across the crowd.

“You all want me to save him that badly? Fine, I'll do it.”

My arm shot up, and the needle hovered above Samuel's forehead.

“But all of you better listen carefully!”

I pointed at the man lying on the table, the hero everyone placed on a pedestal, and shouted.

“Do you know why I would rather die than save this man?”

As the Soulbinding Needle left his body, Samuel's entire body jerked violently. Then a final, ragged sound escaped his throat.“Ghk...”A mouthful of black blood mixed with fragments of tissue burst from his mouth and splattered across the stone floor. His eyes remained fixed on the ceiling. The pupils expanded completely. On the heart monitor, the wildly fluctuating line finally flattened.Beeeeeeep.The long, continuous tone echoed through the clinic, announcing the death of the city's so-called great philanthropist. The moment Michelle saw it, a heart-wrenching scream tore from her throat.“My son!”She wrenched herself free and charged at me like a madwoman.“I'll kill you! You'll pay for this!”I didn't even bother moving. The tactical officers reacted instantly. One stepped in and knocked her to the floor before pinning her down. Her face scraped against the cold stone tiles.Blood streamed down her forehead as she continued screaming and struggling.“Take them away.”The lead of

This is the ultimate revenge!”“Five years of patience, all leading to this moment!”“The Hall family are monsters! They deserve everything that's coming to them!”“Throw every last one of them in prison!”Jason looked utterly defeated. He knew his career was finished. The police arrived and quickly surroun

The boy's testimony shattered the deadlock.“The director pushed us into the cellar, but she didn't make it down herself...“I heard her outside, begging them to spare the children.”The boy looked up, his eyes red and swollen.“I'll never forget that voice for as long as I live.”The Hall of Souls Clinic fell silent. The only sound left was Samuel's agonized screaming. All the strength drained from Jason's body.He staggered back two steps and collapsed into a high-backed chair. He knew it was over. The testimony of six children.Samuel's own confession, and millions of people watching it unfold live. This scandal had grown far beyond anyone's control.Michael finally lost all hope.He released his grip on Samuel's mouth. The despair in his eyes gave way to something far more dangerous.Hatred and madness. He yanked out his gun and pointed it straight at me.“Ashley Cross! Lock the doors?! Was he saving people or trying to kill them?!”“This is insane! There's definitely something huge going on here!”Samuel continued thrashing on the treatment table. His eyes were unfocused. He was clearly trapped in a powerful hallucination.Among the Thirteen Needles of Revival, some needles saved lives while others revealed the truth. When a p

She's killing him!”Michael's eyes were wide with fury.Jason stared at me and gritted his teeth.“Ashley Cross, what exactly are you doing?”I picked up a piece of gauze from the table and calmly wiped the blood from my hands.“I already told you. It's part of the treatment.“If you don't even know that much, what gave you the confidence to come here and tell me how to do my job?”I pointed at the monitor.“Look for yourselves.”On the screen, Samuel's blood oxygen level was slowly climbing. His heart rate was also returning to normal.Jason let out a breath of relief and shoved Michael aside.“Put the gun away! Can't you see Mr. Hall is improving?”Michael clenched his

Jason let out a cold snort.“Ashley Cross, cut the act. You're just afraid of being held responsible and looking for a way out.“Every second counts. Stop talking and save him.”Supported by several prominent figures, Michelle pointed at me and unleashed another stream of insults.“You bitch! You're jealous of the Hall family's reputation! Stop wasting time and treat my son!”I looked at this crowd of self-righteous fools and let out a cold laugh. With a flick of my wrist, the three-inch Soulbinding Needle pierced the center of Samuel's forehead. The moment the needle entered his body, Samuel's weak breathing abruptly halted. His entire body began convulsing uncontrollably. The charred skin covering his body split apart, and dark red blood seeped from the cracks. The monitor beside him erupted into a series of rapid beeps as the heart-rate line on the screen shot wildly up and down.“What did you do?!”Michael's eyes turned bloodshot as he raised his gun and pointed it at my head.“If
