Chapter 1

“What did you say?”

Michael Wood, the lead bodyguard dressed in black, froze on the spot, his eyes widening in disbelief.

He looked down at the mangled man lying on the stretcher, then back up at me.

The man on the stretcher was Samuel Hall.

The richest man in Rivergate, and a philanthropist known to everyone in the city.

Half an hour earlier, a gas explosion had torn through an orphanage in the southern district.

Samuel happened to be passing by when the explosion occurred. He rushed into the flames and shielded six children who were unable to escape.

The children emerged completely unharmed.

Instead, a collapsing support beam slammed into his back, leaving him with severe burns across most of his body and multiple shattered bones.

The director of Rivergate Central Hospital had already issued a critical condition notice, declaring that even a miracle doctor couldn't save him.

With reddened eyes, Michael slammed three black briefcases onto the stone floor.

The latches sprang open, revealing rows upon rows of neatly stacked gold bars.

“Dr. Cross, this is a six-million-dollar deposit! If you agree to treat him, half of the Hall family's commercial properties can be transferred to your name!”

His voice trembled as his forehead repeatedly struck the floor.

“Please! My boss isn't going to last much longer!”

Inside the Hall of Souls Clinic, more than a dozen families of patients waiting for next year's appointments were still gathered in the main hall.

The sight of the gold bars on the floor, followed by the horrific condition of the man on the stretcher, drew a collective gasp from the crowd.

I lifted my teacup and didn't even bother looking up.

“Rules are rules. I don't care if he's the richest man in the city or the greatest philanthropist who ever lived. I'm not treating him.

“Take him and get out of my clinic.”

I set the cup down with a sharp clink.

Silence fell over the entire hall.

Michael suddenly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes blazing with fury.

“Ashley Cross! There are still open slots, aren't there?”

Michael roared at me, his eyes nearly splitting with rage.

“My boss ended up like this because he saved those six orphans! He's a hero to this entire city! The money he donates every year could fill this whole street!

“You won't even save a man like him? What kind of doctor does that make you? Aren't you afraid you'll be punished for it?”

The families waiting in line could no longer stay silent and immediately joined in.

“Dr. Cross, that's Mr. Hall! He paid to pave the road in our town last year!

“Please save him. A hero like him doesn't deserve to die!”

I swept a cold glance across the crowd and let out a mocking snort.

“A hero?”

I slammed my hand heavily onto the table.

“If he wants to be a hero, he should be honored with a memorial and a plaque. What's he doing in my clinic?

“This place runs on rules, not sympathy.”

“If anyone dares to say another word, I won't treat a single member of your family in the future!”

The moment those words left my mouth, the outraged families who were speaking up moments earlier instantly fell silent.

No one dared gamble with the lives of their loved ones.

Michael's hand trembled violently as he stared at me with despair in his eyes.

“Good... very good. So that's the kind of person you are...”

Michael suddenly turned around and roared toward the bodyguards outside.

“Men! Seal off the clinic!”

With a loud crash, more than a dozen bodyguards pulled out expandable batons and blocked the entrance to the Hall of Souls Clinic.

Michael pulled a black handgun from the back of his waistband.

The barrel pointed directly at my forehead.

“Ashley Cross, let me make this perfectly clear.

“You either treat him, or I'll put a bullet through your head first, then tear this worthless clinic apart and make everyone here die alongside my boss!”

As the Soulbinding Needle left his body, Samuel's entire body jerked violently. Then a final, ragged sound escaped his throat.“Ghk...”A mouthful of black blood mixed with fragments of tissue burst from his mouth and splattered across the stone floor. His eyes remained fixed on the ceiling. The pupils expanded completely. On the heart monitor, the wildly fluctuating line finally flattened.Beeeeeeep.The long, continuous tone echoed through the clinic, announcing the death of the city's so-called great philanthropist. The moment Michelle saw it, a heart-wrenching scream tore from her throat.“My son!”She wrenched herself free and charged at me like a madwoman.“I'll kill you! You'll pay for this!”I didn't even bother moving. The tactical officers reacted instantly. One stepped in and knocked her to the floor before pinning her down. Her face scraped against the cold stone tiles.Blood streamed down her forehead as she continued screaming and struggling.“Take them away.”The lead of

As the eighth Ghost Gate Needle pierced a vital point, Samuel's entire body locked up.His eyes bulged from their sockets, the blood vessels within them looking ready to burst.“Ghh! Kill me... Just kill me...”Samuel slammed his head repeatedly against the treatment table as black blood poured from the corners of his mouth. The livestream comments descended into complete chaos.“Holy hell! This is the ultimate revenge!”“Five years of patience, all leading to this moment!”“The Hall family are monsters! They deserve everything that's coming to them!”“Throw every last one of them in prison!”Jason looked utterly defeated. He knew his career was finished. The police arrived and quickly surroun

The boy's testimony shattered the deadlock.“The director pushed us into the cellar, but she didn't make it down herself...“I heard her outside, begging them to spare the children.”The boy looked up, his eyes red and swollen.“I'll never forget that voice for as long as I live.”The Hall of Souls Clinic fell silent. The only sound left was Samuel's agonized screaming. All the strength drained from Jason's body.He staggered back two steps and collapsed into a high-backed chair. He knew it was over. The testimony of six children.Samuel's own confession, and millions of people watching it unfold live. This scandal had grown far beyond anyone's control.Michael finally lost all hope.He released his grip on Samuel's mouth. The despair in his eyes gave way to something far more dangerous.Hatred and madness. He yanked out his gun and pointed it straight at me.“Ashley Cross! I'm going to kill you!”Bang! The gun fired. The instant Michael pulled the trigger, I flicked a Ghost Gate Needl

Samuel's bloodcurdling scream echoed through the Hall of Souls Clinic.Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.Michelle's cane slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor as her legs gave out beneath her.Jason drew in a sharp breath, his eyes widening in shock. The reporter nearly dropped her microphone.Even the livestream comments went silent for nearly ten seconds.A hero praised by millions.A philanthropist who was on the verge of receiving the city's highest civilian honor.Yet at death's door, those were the words that came out of his mouth. Then the comments exploded.“What the hell did I just hear?!”“Burn them alive? Lock the doors?! Was he saving people or trying to kill them?!”“This is insane! There's definitely something huge going on here!”Samuel continued thrashing on the treatment table. His eyes were unfocused. He was clearly trapped in a powerful hallucination.Among the Thirteen Needles of Revival, some needles saved lives while others revealed the truth. When a p

Black blood splattered across the treatment table, filling the room with a foul, metallic stench.“My son!”Michelle let out a shrill scream and nearly fainted again.Michael completely lost control. His finger tightened on the trigger, ready to pull.“Stop!”Jason roared and grabbed the barrel of the gun.“Mr. Watson! She's killing him!”Michael's eyes were wide with fury.Jason stared at me and gritted his teeth.“Ashley Cross, what exactly are you doing?”I picked up a piece of gauze from the table and calmly wiped the blood from my hands.“I already told you. It's part of the treatment.“If you don't even know that much, what gave you the confidence to come here and tell me how to do my job?”I pointed at the monitor.“Look for yourselves.”On the screen, Samuel's blood oxygen level was slowly climbing. His heart rate was also returning to normal.Jason let out a breath of relief and shoved Michael aside.“Put the gun away! Can't you see Mr. Hall is improving?”Michael clenched his

Jason let out a cold snort.“Ashley Cross, cut the act. You're just afraid of being held responsible and looking for a way out.“Every second counts. Stop talking and save him.”Supported by several prominent figures, Michelle pointed at me and unleashed another stream of insults.“You bitch! You're jealous of the Hall family's reputation! Stop wasting time and treat my son!”I looked at this crowd of self-righteous fools and let out a cold laugh. With a flick of my wrist, the three-inch Soulbinding Needle pierced the center of Samuel's forehead. The moment the needle entered his body, Samuel's weak breathing abruptly halted. His entire body began convulsing uncontrollably. The charred skin covering his body split apart, and dark red blood seeped from the cracks. The monitor beside him erupted into a series of rapid beeps as the heart-rate line on the screen shot wildly up and down.“What did you do?!”Michael's eyes turned bloodshot as he raised his gun and pointed it at my head.“If
