Chapter 3

作者: Sherry Marshmallow
“Make way! Everyone stand back!”

A swarm of reporters carrying cameras pushed their way inside.

Blinding camera flashes instantly illuminated the dim interior of the Hall of Souls Clinic.

“Good evening, viewers. We're coming to you live from the mysterious Hall of Souls Clinic here in Rivergate!”

A female reporter spoke rapidly into her microphone as she faced the camera.

“As you can see, Samuel Hall, the hero who rescued six children from a burning building earlier today, is currently fighting for his life on a stretcher.

“And yet Dr. Ashley Cross, who claims to be the successor to the legendary Thirteen Needles of Revival, has allegedly refused to treat him, citing nothing more than her own rules.”

The cameras swung directly toward my face.

Outside the clinic, the crowd erupted into chaos.

People shouted insults at the top of their lungs. Some even picked up chunks of broken pavement and hurled them at the clinic's front door.

“Shut this place down!”

“Drive that heartless woman out of Rivergate!”

“Letting a man die like this is murder!”

Amid the deafening uproar, Jason Watson, president of the Rivergate Chamber of Commerce, strode through the doorway with a grim expression.

Behind him came the president of the Medical Licensing Board, flanked by several tough-looking men who resembled bodyguards more than physicians.

Jason glanced at Samuel lying on the floor.

His face darkened instantly.

Then he turned and fixed me with a hard stare.

“Dr. Cross, we're here to protect one of Rivergate's most respected citizens.”

His voice carried the authority of a man accustomed to being obeyed.

“Mr. Hall isn't just the richest man in Rivergate. If something happens to him, the impact on this city's economy will be enormous.”

Jason stopped in front of me and lowered his voice.

“If you refuse to save him today, the public backlash alone will destroy you.

“Do you really want to risk losing your medical license? Or having this clinic shut down?

“You're a smart woman. Don't make this harder than it needs to be.”

He straightened and gave a curt wave of his hand.

The president of the Medical Licensing Board immediately stepped forward.

“Ashley Cross, all it takes is one report from me for your medical credentials to come under review.

“When that happens, whether this clinic stays open is anyone's guess.”

Threats and pressure.

Carrots and sticks.

Every powerful figure in Rivergate now stood against me.

What awaited me was public condemnation, professional ruin, and the complete destruction of everything I built.

Everyone stared at me, waiting for me to give in.

I inhaled the sharp scent of burning sage, and my eyes gradually turned cold.

“Mr. Watson, that's quite a display of authority.”

I flipped the desk in front of me with one violent motion.

The teacup crashed to the floor and shattered into countless pieces.

“My medical license? Revoke it if you want.

“This clinic? You can bulldoze it to the ground right now.”

I pointed at my own head and stared straight at the gun barrels aimed at me.

“My life's right here. If you've got the nerve, pull the trigger.

“But remember this. My rules are absolute. I don't care whether it's a king, a billionaire, or a living saint standing in front of me. The rules don't change.

“Today, you can hold a knife to my throat. You can reduce this clinic to rubble.

“But I still won't touch him.”

Jason's face turned deathly pale with rage.

The hand pointing at me trembled violently.

“You lunatic...You're completely out of your mind!”

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Suddenly, the monitor beside the stretcher erupted into a shrill alarm.

The heart-rate line on the screen spiked wildly.

Then it began flattening toward a straight line.

Samuel was running out of time.

As the Soulbinding Needle left his body, Samuel's entire body jerked violently. Then a final, ragged sound escaped his throat.“Ghk...”A mouthful of black blood mixed with fragments of tissue burst from his mouth and splattered across the stone floor. His eyes remained fixed on the ceiling. The pupils expanded completely. On the heart monitor, the wildly fluctuating line finally flattened.Beeeeeeep.The long, continuous tone echoed through the clinic, announcing the death of the city's so-called great philanthropist. The moment Michelle saw it, a heart-wrenching scream tore from her throat.“My son!”She wrenched herself free and charged at me like a madwoman.“I'll kill you! You'll pay for this!”I didn't even bother moving. The tactical officers reacted instantly. One stepped in and knocked her to the floor before pinning her down. Her face scraped against the cold stone tiles.Blood streamed down her forehead as she continued screaming and struggling.“Take them away.”The lead of

This is the ultimate revenge!”“Five years of patience, all leading to this moment!”“The Hall family are monsters! They deserve everything that's coming to them!”“Throw every last one of them in prison!”Jason looked utterly defeated. He knew his career was finished. The police arrived and quickly surroun

The boy's testimony shattered the deadlock.“The director pushed us into the cellar, but she didn't make it down herself...“I heard her outside, begging them to spare the children.”The boy looked up, his eyes red and swollen.“I'll never forget that voice for as long as I live.”The Hall of Souls Clinic fell silent. The only sound left was Samuel's agonized screaming. All the strength drained from Jason's body.He staggered back two steps and collapsed into a high-backed chair. He knew it was over. The testimony of six children.Samuel's own confession, and millions of people watching it unfold live. This scandal had grown far beyond anyone's control.Michael finally lost all hope.He released his grip on Samuel's mouth. The despair in his eyes gave way to something far more dangerous.Hatred and madness. He yanked out his gun and pointed it straight at me.“Ashley Cross! Samuel's bloodcurdling scream echoed through the Hall of Souls Clinic.Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.Michelle's cane slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor as her legs gave out beneath her.Jason drew in a sharp breath, his eyes widening in shock. The reporter nearly dropped her microphone.Even the livestream comments went silent for nearly ten seconds.A hero praised by millions.A philanthropist who was on the verge of receiving the city's highest civilian honor.Yet at death's door, those were the words that came out of his mouth. Then the comments exploded.“What the hell did I just hear?!”“Burn them alive? Lock the doors?! Was he saving people or trying to kill them?!”“This is insane! There's definitely something huge going on here!”Samuel continued thrashing on the treatment table. His eyes were unfocused. He was clearly trapped in a powerful hallucination.Among the Thirteen Needles of Revival, some needles saved lives while others revealed the truth. When a p

Black blood splattered across the treatment table, filling the room with a foul, metallic stench.“My son!”Michelle let out a shrill scream and nearly fainted again.Michael completely lost control. His finger tightened on the trigger, ready to pull.“Stop!”Jason roared and grabbed the barrel of the gun.“Mr. Watson! She's killing him!”Michael's eyes were wide with fury.Jason stared at me and gritted his teeth.“Ashley Cross, what exactly are you doing?”I picked up a piece of gauze from the table and calmly wiped the blood from my hands.“I already told you. It's part of the treatment.“If you don't even know that much, what gave you the confidence to come here and tell me how to do my job?”I pointed at the monitor.“Look for yourselves.”On the screen, Samuel's blood oxygen level was slowly climbing. His heart rate was also returning to normal.Jason let out a breath of relief and shoved Michael aside.“Put the gun away! Can't you see Mr. Hall is improving?”Michael clenched his

Jason let out a cold snort.“Ashley Cross, cut the act. You're just afraid of being held responsible and looking for a way out.“Every second counts. Stop talking and save him.”Supported by several prominent figures, Michelle pointed at me and unleashed another stream of insults.“You bitch! You're jealous of the Hall family's reputation! Stop wasting time and treat my son!”I looked at this crowd of self-righteous fools and let out a cold laugh. With a flick of my wrist, the three-inch Soulbinding Needle pierced the center of Samuel's forehead. The moment the needle entered his body, Samuel's weak breathing abruptly halted. His entire body began convulsing uncontrollably. The charred skin covering his body split apart, and dark red blood seeped from the cracks. The monitor beside him erupted into a series of rapid beeps as the heart-rate line on the screen shot wildly up and down.“What did you do?!”Michael's eyes turned bloodshot as he raised his gun and pointed it at my head.“If
