Chapter 5

Author: Quick Creating
Blood filled my mouth.

Lucian finally released me. We stood facing each other, both breathing hard, both a mess.

He wiped the blood from his mouth, his gaze gradually clearing.

“Find some time to get rid of the baby.”

I picked up the medical report confirming my miscarriage and threw it in front of him.

“You think I’d keep your child?”

He went still, staring at the date.

The day of our fight.

After a moment, the corners of his mouth lifted.

“Well done, sweetheart.”

I clenched my fists and turned away.

Lucian lifted me onto the bed and settled me against his chest.

“Promise me you’ll never mention severing our bond again. You and I are going to be husband and wife for the rest of our lives.”

Someone began pounding on the door.

His arms stiffened around me. He barked toward the entrance, “Get lost!”

Vivienne burst in anyway and dropped to her knees.

“Lucian! Nellie… Nellie’s missing!”

Lucian shot to his feet.

Vivienne turned her tearful eyes on me. He followed her gaze, his brow tightening.

“Was it you? Did you give away Nellie’s location?”

“No!”

“You’re the only one who knew about her! You’re the only one who knows what your husband does every day! If you’re angry, take it out on me. Why go after a child?”

“Enough!”

I drew a breath. The wound in my chest throbbed.

“What’s the point of standing here throwing accusations at me? Think about how to get her back!”

Vivienne choked out her answer.

“The people who took the pup are your enemies, Nova… the White Wolf Pack in the East…”

Lucian stiffened.

I understood what he intended at once. We moved almost simultaneously.

But I had barely recovered from a serious injury. Within a few exchanges, he had me by the throat, pinned against the railing.

“Nova, if my daughter dies, I have nothing to live for. If you won’t trade yourself for her, we can die together right now.”

I stopped struggling.

Everyone said Lucian was cold-blooded. To everyone but me.

Even I hadn’t known that his daughter with Vivienne was the one person he truly couldn’t lose.

“Fine. But we sever our bond first.”

His hand went still around my throat.

After a silence, he said, “All right.”

I pulled my lips into a smile.

So severing our bond wasn’t that difficult after all.

Once it was done, Vivienne seemed less anxious than before.

Lucian, on the other hand, wouldn’t wait another moment. He had me bound, put on a plane, and flown to an abandoned mine on the eastern border.

When the exchange was over, he held his recovered daughter in his arms, his eyes red, and pressed a hard kiss to her forehead.

Vivienne shoved me from behind, sending me toward the Eastern Pack’s guards.

They took me into the pack’s territory and brought me before Kasper.

He sat at the head of the hall, half his face in shadow.

“After killing so many of my men, did you ever imagine you’d end up at my mercy, Nova?”

I curved my lips and raised my bound wrists toward him.

“Aren’t you going to untie me?”

His fingers curled tight.“That day, I swore I’d never let you down. I failed. I know. I wronged you. But I still wanted to protect you. That’s why I told you not to sever the mate bond.”I slapped him across the face.“You bastard!”He didn’t move away. Instead, he gently caught my hand.“I was a bastard. Now I regret it. I’ll spend the rest of my life keeping the promise I made then. I won’t fail you again.”I tore my hand free and stepped back.“You don’t deserve the chance.”I shoved him aside and stumbled toward the door.“Nova!”I didn’t look back. I closed the door behind me.I hadn’t realized my phone had fallen on the study floor.Lucian stood for a moment, then bent to pick it up.The screen was still on, open to my messages with Kasper. He glanced at the door and moved his fingers across the screen, sending the message.“Kasper, I’m not coming back. I want to stay with him forever. I’m sorry. I’ve changed my mind. I’ll have to repay what I owe you in another life.”In the me

In the study, Lucian finally told me about his past.He had known me far longer than I had realized. He was the family’s unacknowledged bastard. No one treated him as a person. Even the guards could kick him as they passed.Only a stray wolf pup would play with him.One rainy night, when he was five, he took some dried meat to feed it.His older brothers and sisters were waiting for him. They made him look at the freshly stripped pelt. From that day on, they taught him over and over that he deserved nothing of his own.Lucian raised his head, his eyes red at the corners.“They said I was a mistake. A thing. An animal. I wasn’t fit to sit at their table. To survive, I learned to read people. I could always find a few words that told them exactly what they wanted to hear.”He rose and went to the window, his back rigid.“As I grew older, my looks helped. Even women who used to look down on me began to let their guard down. I charmed people, bought their loyalty. I fooled even my father.

But just before their lips touched, he stopped.Cecilia’s expression shifted. She caught his face in her hands and leaned in herself.“No!”Kasper shoved her away.“Guards! Get Cecilia out of here!”The door flew open, and two guards rushed in.He stumbled into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and stood beneath the cold water. The drug still raged through him. Bracing himself against the wall, he bit his tongue until blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.Water streamed down his face. Gradually, his breathing steadied.By morning, his head was clear. The first thing he did was cut all ties with Cecilia. In the hall, she gave a desolate laugh.“You think I care about being your sister? Let me tell you something, Kasper. I haven’t thought of you as my brother since I turned eighteen!”“Shut up!”“We’ve had more than twenty years together, and you fall for a woman you’ve known for five? Your enemy? What’s wrong with me?”Kasper’s face hardened.“She’s out of her mind. Send her aw

Lucian stood next to me, looking down at it.“I’m sorry. I wanted so badly to have someone who was entirely mine. That’s what she was.”My voice was cold.“Wasn’t I your wife?”He said nothing.I turned toward him.“At our bonding ceremony, we swore we would belong only to each other. Forever.”He lowered his head.“I’m sorry. You’ve read my file, haven’t you? I always thought men of my bloodline were entitled to more than one woman.”I gave a harsh laugh.“As long as there was only one woman I loved, the others were just diversions. I thought that was enough. But I was wrong. By the time I realized it, it was too late…”The wind lifted ash from the ruins. He looked at me.“So the only thing left for me to do is make amends. I’ll do anything it takes.”I didn’t understand what he meant then.Only later did I learn that he had been intercepting my communications with the outside world the whole time.Every reply Kasper received from me had been written by Lucian. Each one colder than th

Kasper frowned.“Did he force you?”I didn’t answer.“If this isn’t what you want, he can’t make you do anything. Not while I’m here.”“I need to know the truth about those four prophecies.”I looked up at him.“Leaving you is his only condition.”“We can find another way.”“I can’t wait!”He went still. My eyes stung. I fought to keep the tears from falling.“I need to know what happened to my mother.”Kasper looked down at the ring I had placed on his desk. After a moment, he rose, walked over, and took my hand.“If you’ve made your decision, I understand.”My eyes burned harder.I pulled my hand away.“I’m sorry.”I turned toward the door without looking back.“Just put another favor on my tab. Once I have my answers, I’ll come back.”“Can you promise me that?”I had already left the room.Kasper stood where he was, looking at the empty doorway. The light slowly faded from his eyes.Lucian and I were back where we had started. In the Northern Pack’s council chamber, he bent his head

I tried to pull away. His grip only tightened.“Nova, sever your bond with him and come back to me. Everything I have will be yours. Me. My wealth. My power. My secrets.”“Let go of me, Lucian!”“Nova.”He looked down at me with such tenderness, as if I were the only person he could see.“Leave him. Please. I’ll never hurt you again…”At the same time, Kasper sat in his study, territorial documents spread over his desk.Every word spoken in the medical suite came through the phone beside him.His fingers tightened, creasing the edge of a document. One of his men asked quietly, “Shall we throw him out now, sir?”“Why? He still has answers Nova wants.”“But Lucian means it. He’s determined to take her away.”“So?”“You’re… not worried she’ll go?”Kasper smiled and set down the paper.“Plenty of men want Nova. I’m the only one who deserves her.”After a moment’s hesitation, the man asked, “But didn’t you hate her at first, sir?”Kasper paused and looked toward the window.“Yes. Then that
