Chapter 4

Author: Swimming Free
My gaze didn't so much as flicker away from the screen. "I forgot."

Steven came up and wrapped an arm around my shoulder, shaking a pack of food in front of me almost proudly. "You haven't eaten either, huh? Well, Jenny told me to bring you something to eat!

"You're always so mean to Jenny, but she's always been nice to you in return! You embarrassed her in front of her relatives, but she still remembered to bring you food. You'd better apologize to her later when she and her family arrive, and be a good hostess!"

I glanced at the words 'Jemma's Kitchen' printed on the packaging, and moved my body away from Steven.

"It's fine. I've already eaten."

Besides, I didn't eat leftovers.

Just an hour ago, Jenny flaunted how she was eating dinner with Steven on social media. "Woah, I almost died in that accident! Steven and I are having dinner to recover from the shock!"

The location? Jemma's Kitchen, of course.

Steven didn't seem to hear what I said and started to lay out the food in front of me.

You're sulking because I left you by the road today, right? Well, I didn't have a choice!

"Come on, I know you haven't eaten. Let me feed you! After we eat, we can clean up the nursery together, since Jenny's brother will be staying there.

I refused to eat, and in the process, I accidentally knocked over the soup.

The hot liquid splashed onto his suit, and he immediately slammed the bowl onto the table, the soup spilling onto the couch and the carpet. Furious, he swept all the food into the trash.

"Throwing a tantrum, huh? Fine! Don't eat then!"

I stood up silently, not betraying any emotion. "We spent so much time setting up the baby's room together. Are you sure you want to do this?"

Still angry, Steven stormed into the nursery. He grabbed the rocking chair we had bought and smashed it to the ground, before throwing the toys into the rubbish bin. Then, he fixed me with a glare so furious it could kill. "Well, what's the point of keeping it? It's not like you can have a baby anyway!"

I wasn't born like this, though.

I still remember the boy who bravely jumped into the water and saved me after I had been bullied and forced to soak in the freezing river for three hours.

I still remember how, when he proposed, he told me that he didn't care about my injuries. That I was the only baby he needed in his life.

When I wanted a baby, he was willing to set up a baby room with me.

Now, I watched as he smashed everything in the nursery to pieces, not doing anything to stop him.

Then, I turned and walked into the guest room.

  • The Last Straw   Chapter 14

Jenny was completely driven off the internet, and legal punishment soon followed for her and her family. For inciting Jeremy to commit sexual assault, Jenny was sentenced to one year in prison, with a suspended sentence. On top of that, she was also sentenced to another two years in prison for defamation, slander, and public disturbance. She had a six-month suspension, due to her pregnancy. Over a few days, she became a social pariah, despised by everyone who laid their eyes on her. Unable to handle the drastic fall from grace, she turned her frustration on Jeremy, calling him noisy and blaming everything that happened to her on him. Then, she stabbed her own brother to death with a fruit knife. That very day, she tried to run into the streets in a panic to escape punishment, only to be crushed beneath the wheels of an oncoming car, her body mangled beyond recognition. Her parents hated her for killing their son, so they didn't even bother to collect her remains.Steven, due t

  • The Last Straw   Chapter 13

The evidence my brother gathered was already enough, but it hadn’t caused a big enough uproar. I wanted the whole world to know about Steven's dirty deeds! Thanks to the fiasco with Jenny, I had unexpectedly gained a massive following online. Now was the perfect time to use that momentum—to expose Steven and Jenny’s affair during my marriage.I also released footage of Jeremy getting bailed out by Steven’s money. The internet exploded. After that, I released the evidence Marcus collected earlier, proof of Steven’s bribery, market monopolization, and even illegal business dealings with foreign entities.Naturally, the authorities froze his assets and took him in for investigation. Everything was going smoothly until Jenny decided to fight back. Out of nowhere, she found indecent pictures that were taken of me back when I was bullied in school, and made rumors that I'd always loved to seduce men. She hired an army of bots to flood the internet, manipulating public opinion in he

When Marcus saw me return so suddenly, he looked anxious. "Why are you back?"Before I could answer, my phone rang. Somehow, Steven had gotten hold of my new number, and his furious voice blasted through the speaker. "Melanie, I admit I wronged you, but did you really need to tell your brother to ruin me completely?!"Naturally, I looked at Marcus in confusion. Without hesitation, he grabbed the phone and snapped. "You know what you did, you scum! You were the one who got me locked up for so many years, the one who made Mom and Dad die so early, and made my sister have a miscarriage! You deserve everything you're getting!"After that, he hung up. "What? Marcus, what do you mean? Mom and Dad, they…" I stared at him in shock. Sighing, he scratched his head helplessly. "I sent you abroad in the first place because I'd already gathered the evidence to take Steven down. I was worried you'd hesitate, so I sent you away before you could stop me. I didn't expect you to come back o

  • The Last Straw   Chapter 11

Halfway through my time abroad, a problem arose with a new project, forcing me to return home to handle it. That's when I learned that Steven and Jenny had held a grand, extravagant wedding. Not only that, but they had also announced that Jenny was pregnant. Apparently, they'd tried sending me a wedding invite, but I was off skiing that time so I hadn't the slightest clue. Not that I would have cared anyway, seeing how it didn't faze me in the slightest now. But when I checked the security footage at home, I found something interesting. The night before his wedding, Steven had gotten drunk outside my door, crying about how he was getting married. He begged me to come back, saying that Jenny didn't deserve him, and that I was the only one who deserved him.Later on, Jenny had the gall to edit and post another picture, saying that I got together with another man abroad the moment I got a divorce."Gosh, my husband's ex-wife is so attractive… She got divorced but immediately fo

  • The Last Straw   Chapter 10

After running around for a few days, my brother finally finished collecting the documents I needed for the divorce. When I placed the photos of him and Jenny entering a hotel together in front of him, his face turned pale, then red, then pale again. Panicked, he stammered, "Melanie, I was just drunk that night! N-Nothing happened! You know you're the only one I love…"I-I just see her as a little sister…"His voice grew weaker and weaker.I let out a cold laugh. "Steven, can't you at least man up and admit to what you did? Is it really that hard to admit that you were cheating on me?"In hindsight, the truth was in plain sight the whole time. The date he started arguing with me more and more was clear—it was the day I asked him directly if he liked Jenny. That was the first time he'd gotten in such a fit of rage towards me, but now it was clear that he was acting on a guilty conscience. I'd hit the nail straight on the head. To cover up his affair, he had to shift the blame on

  • The Last Straw   Chapter 9

The moment those words left my mouth, Jenny's eyes lit up, overjoyed. Meanwhile, Steven looked like he'd lost his soul, staring blankly at me. "Does it really have to end like this? I love you, Melanie…"Jenny's expression instantly changed, and she let out a pitiful cry. "Ah, it hurts so much!"Just then, my brother walked in. The moment he saw the state of the hospital room, the chicken soup spilled all over me, with Steven and Jenny at the scene, he immediately understood what was going on. Without hesitation, he drove them both out.For some reason, Steven seemed to have lost his mind, showing up at my hospital room every day and refusing to leave. "I'm sorry, Melanie! Can we not get divorced?"He brought ninety-nine roses each time, acting like a devoted husband who wanted nothing more than to take care of his wife, but my heart felt nothing. When I was finally discharged, he went even further. A full makeup team and professional photographers arrived at my door."Melanie
