Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Roger's face changed in an instant. He snatched up a wooden stick from the side and jammed it toward my mouth.

"How dare you call him Ty! It's not your place!"

The stick's splinters tore into my gums and tongue until blood filled my mouth. The pain was so sharp that I could only groan pitifully.

On the other end of the line, Tyler hesitated. "Wait… did someone just call me Ty?"

Roger forced a grin at the camera. "Oh, that was the package. She heard your name and blurted it out."

My parents bobbed their heads quickly. "Yes, yes, that's right! She just heard us mention your name and shouted it."

Then my father kicked me hard in the mouth. "Shut it! Don't you dare dirty Tyler's name with that useless mouth of yours!"

My lips throbbed like fire, swelling fast.

"Enough. Let me see her," Tyler said, his voice impatient. "That voice sounds familiar."

Roger crouched down, yanked my hair, and shoved my face toward the phone's camera.

For one brief moment, my heart lit up with hope. If Tyler recognized me, he'd order my parents to release me.

But Tyler only frowned, looking disappointed. "This is her? Don't see what's so special. You're not pulling one over on me, are you?"

My heart sank like a stone.

He didn't recognize me.

In the glow of the phone screen, I caught a glimpse of myself. My cheeks were swollen, my lips bleeding, and my eyes half-shut. No wonder he didn't know me—I barely recognized myself.

My birth family had done this to me.

The thought hollowed me out. I wanted to cry, but all that came out were choked gasps.

Roger flung me aside by the hair and hurried to explain, "No, no! She really is pretty, like a doll. We just punished her a little for misbehaving. Once she heals, she'll be fine!"

He wiped sweat from his forehead while my parents whispered nervously behind him.

"Damn it. What if he gets mad at us?"

"I'm worried. too."

"Roger, show him her ID," my mother urged under her breath.

Roger's eyes lit up. He dug into his pocket. "Tyler, I'd never lie to you. I have her ID right here. One look, and you'll see how gorgeous she really is!"

"Fine, let me see it," Tyler said lazily.

Hope flickered back in me. Tyler had seen me a few times before. He would definitely recognize me once he saw my picture.

Roger shoved my ID up to the camera.

I straightened as much as I could, silently pleading for Tyler to look closely.

Tyler murmured. "Not bad. Pretty face. Just a little short-haired, almost boyish. And the name…" He squinted at the ID. "Bambi? Isn’t that a cartoon character?"

Then he burst out laughing.

My mother raised her hand toward me, but before she could strike me, Margaret grabbed her hand."She's so stubborn. Mia, you shouldn't have saved her."I sat up and shook my head."I had to. She risked her life to give birth to me. I owe her at least one life in return."Margaret thought about it, then slowly let go of my hand."You're right. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have you. But I'm worried she'll hurt you in the future. I don't want you two to meet again."With that, Margaret ordered them to wheel my mother away. She told the guards to lock her in a dark room and give her one small meal and some water every day, just enough to keep her alive.I didn't argue anymore. As my mother was pushed out, she screamed in desperation, "I'm your real mom! Save me!"I let out a long sigh.More than saving my mother, I wanted to save all the innocent people who were dragged into this.Another month passed. One day, Ollie's men brought back a beautiful young woman. They said sh

Margaret gently laid me back on the bed, then called the bodyguard in."How's that woman?""Her right leg got chopped off and fed to the dogs. She passed out from blood loss, but she's not dead yet.""Good. Patch her up. Don't let her die."The guard nodded and left.I relaxed a little. This was all the payback my birth family brought on themselves. My mother always complained that she almost bled out and died from giving birth to me. Well, this time I returned the favor. She bled out the same way, but I made sure they saved her.I spent the next month lying in bed, recovering.Honestly, I was mostly healed after ten days, but the doctor insisted on telling my foster parents and Ollie that I needed at least a month of rest. They assigned a few people to watch over me 24/7. I couldn't go anywhere except my room. One afternoon, while watching TV, I saw a news report. The media had noticed our whole family went missing after a trip to Tranvego. They'd already tracked where we d

When Ollie saw how badly I'd been beaten, his face twisted with rage."You've been with me all these years and still couldn't recognize my sister? How could you let people do this to her? I'll teach you a lesson!"Tyler groveled again, looking desperate."I swear, I didn't know! They cut off all her hair, gave her a silly name, and beat her up so badly—how could I have possibly recognized her? If she had been her real, beautiful self, of course, I would've known right away!"At that, Ollie's eyes reddened."I washed her long hair and took care of it since she was a kid. How dare you cut it off!" His voice dropped, cold and sharp. "Throw him in a boiling vat and burn off every hair on his body."Roger's face went pale with terror. He tried to beg, but the guards dragged him away.Meanwhile, the doctor hooked me up to an IV and carefully cleaned and bandaged my wounds. Margaret, Neil, and Ollie hovered around me, full of concern. But no matter how kind they acted, I couldn't brin

The moment those words left Margaret's lips, everyone froze.Tyler finally snapped to his senses. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees. His voice shook as he stammered, "Y-you're Miss Mia? No way… This can't be real!"Margaret ignored him completely. She pulled a handkerchief from her pocket and gently dabbed the blood off my face."From the time you were little, we never let anyone lay a finger on you. And now look at you, beaten half to death. If you hadn't run off, this never would've happened…"Tyler broke down completely. He spun around and groveled before me, looking as if he was about to kiss the ground."I'm sorry, Miss Mia! I didn't recognize you! Please forgive me!"My family just stood there, stunned, still trying to figure out what was happening.Margaret soon got annoyed by Tyler's voice and waved her hand impatiently."Quiet. You're disturbing my baby girl."She glanced at one of her men. "Go. Bring a doctor to check her injuries."Tyler, as if he'd

"Bambi?"Margaret said my name in a cold, distant voice, then turned her sharp gaze on my parents and Roger."Yes, that's her," my father said quickly, eager to please. "She's cursed and nearly dragged our whole family down with her. So, we gave her a silly name as a kind of payback."My mother chimed in right away, "That's right! But now that she belongs to you, you can call her whatever you want."Roger, noticing Margaret's expression falling, leaned close to Tyler and whispered, "Hey, can we leave now? Let's just sign the papers and grab the money."Tyler motioned for him to shut up, then asked Margaret carefully, "Mrs. Fuller, should I go ahead and send this girl to the winery?"Margaret didn't answer him. Instead, she reached down and helped me to my feet. Her hands trembled as she ripped the tape off my mouth. The scab on my swollen, torn lips ripped open again, and blood dripped down, splattering onto her high heels.Tyler's face darkened. He shoved me aside and dropped

Two days later, the car finally stopped. My family dragged me out, and the second they yanked the hood off, a wave of sadness hit me.I had guessed correctly. It was the house I'd lived in for 18 years. The statues at the front gate still had the dark circles I'd drawn on them as a kid, back when I thought it was hilarious.I glanced around, caught up in my thoughts, when my father suddenly slapped me so hard that my ears rang."Keep your damn eyes down. Don't look at things you're not supposed to."It was a while before the gates creaked open. Then out stepped a tall, broad-shouldered man.It was Tyler.Roger hurried forward, rubbing his hands together nervously. "Hello, Ty. We brought the girl, just like you asked. So, uh…"Tyler's gaze swept over me, and he frowned."You didn't have to rough her up this badly."Over the past two days, my family had beaten me more times than I could count. To keep me quiet, they'd even taped my mouth shut so I wouldn't blurt anything like l
