Chapter 2

Aвтор: Island
After leaving the Pack Council, I printed out the agreement to break my mate bond, just as Harold's call came through.

Harold, the so-called perfect mate, spoke with a softness that belied the chaos of recent events. "My dear, I'm so sorry. Those rogues blindsided us, and I missed our fifth anniversary. Beating them back was only half the battle, and I owed you an apology gift."

As the printer churned out the agreement, Harold was clueless that I was plotting my departure.

"Why would I be mad at you? I vowed to be the most empathetic Luna. With all these rogue attacks, you've been stretched thin. I've got a surprise for you, too."

Harold's voice buzzed with excitement. "Anita, you're too kind. Even when I mess up, you still think of me."

I signed the agreement, my tears falling faster than my pen, blurring the ink. "You didn't mess up. Defending the pack is always the right move."

Harold sidestepped my comment, simply telling me to meet him at the Howl Office for a belated anniversary celebration.

I locked the signed document in a time-coded safe, set to unlock in three days. "What will you feel when you find this, Harold?" I wondered.

The welcome was overwhelming when I stepped into the Howl Office. A crown was placed upon my head, moonflowers pressed into my hands, and the room bathed in the soft glow of a moonlight projector.

Harold dropped to one knee, his hand outstretched with the shimmering Moonshadow Stone. "My mate, will you accept this overdue token of my love?"

My eyes drifted from Harold to Selena, the fierce fighter who had come for him that day. Then, she stood behind him, eyeing me curiously as she pushed a cake cart.

"Anita, are you upset? Why the silence? Have I been too wrapped up in my duties? I haven't been by your side enough, have I?" Harold's voice was laced with unwarranted worry, his striking golden eyes locked onto mine.

I laughed softly, accepting the stone. "Promise me you'll stay out of the forest. Hunting there worries me."

Harold's relief was palpable as he kissed my hand tenderly. "Being your mate, the mightiest of werewolves, is my pride—hunting for you, my privilege."

I handed him my own carefully wrapped gift. "Here's my response, but you'll have to wait three days before it reveals itself."

"Three days? That means I'll be left guessing about your surprise." Harold rose, his embrace warm, his whispers intimate. "Darling, you're always full of surprises, making life with you an adventure." Applause and cheers for our love story filled the air.

"Seeing them together makes me long for a mate of my own," someone sighed dreamily.

"Do you sense the shift? The Alpha's only this tender with his Luna."

"Our secret anniversary redo for Luna's leaked, and it's all over the headlines now."

I could already picture the online frenzy: [#True Love Approved by Moon Goddess#] and [#Alpha's Wife Routine#]. The envy, the cheers—they would soon take over our pack's online world.

It was laughable, really. There I was, wrapped in Harold's arms, but he reeked of a perfume that was not his—a sickly sweet stench, like fruit left to rot.

I let Harold hold me tight, yet my eyes could not help but stray to Selena. If only I had the senses of a wolf, I might have sniffed out the remnants of their secret affair.

Selena offered me a smile, but the green-eyed monster was plain to see in her gaze.

Harold was at his wit's end after a year of searching, so he put out a bounty on me online.[My Luna is mad at me, and I have looked everywhere. If anyone's seen my Luna, I'm offering a cool 1.5 million dollars.]The moment that bounty hit the Internet, I knew it was only a matter of time before Harold found me. Who could ignore the pull of 1.5 million dollars? He did not care about dragging my name through the mud or that I would be the talk of the town, the fragile omega that everyone would bad-mouth.They would all say I did not appreciate what I had, that I was just a spoiled brat riding on Harold's coattails.I brushed off my date, who was hinting at a coffee upstairs, and turned back to Harold with a smile that quickly faded to nothing but chill. His eyes brimmed with unshed tears as he stood rooted to the spot, looking at me with the fervor of a man praying to the Moon Goddess.I moved closer, my voice laced with bitterness, "To brew the witch's concoction, I had to slice

Under the glow of the moon, I touched down in Wolfen Kingdom, a sprawling city of werewolves. They had been after me since graduation, eager to tap into my cutting-edge medical skills.Werewolves heal fast, but I had a knack for easing the sting of their recovery and smoothing away the nasty scars.Leaving Harold's pack behind, I reached out to Wolfen Kingdom's beta. She was thrilled I was coming and wasted no time sending a jet for me. I left without the witch's potion, which was not ready yet.Stepping off the plane, a stunning she-wolf caught my eye. Leaning on a sleek sports car, she greeted me, "Welcome to Wolfen Kingdom."She was the beta, a fierce beauty marked by battle. I had erased her scars myself. Her guidance had me settling into the fast life in no time.I had broken free from a love gone sour, unleashing the pain I had bottled up for so long. Panic seized Harold. He rushed in and froze at the sight of his favorite meal—grilled salmon and meatloaf—cold and abandoned on the table."Anita, why haven't you eaten? Were you waiting for me all night?" he asked, his voice shaking.Silence was his only reply.Memories of a text message sent him racing upstairs to rummage through his suitcase. He had brought along the small box I had given him, eager to uncover the surprise inside. The timer on the box had run out. With hands shaking, Harold opened it to find the words 'mate bond dissolution agreement' glaring at him, a blow as piercing as a silver bullet to the heart. He was soulless, staring at the signed agreement, my signature accompanied by a few dried tears. His eyes slowly reddened with the realization. I had seemed normal, but I had been planning my departure all along, ever since I handed him that gift. For three days, I had been silently bidding him farewell, with each passing moment. He kept walking out on me, all i

Harold, as if struck by a sudden premonition, jerked his head up, searching for something unseen.I guessed the old magic was at work, scrubbing away the invisible thread that connected Harold and me."Anita." He strained to feel my presence, but it was like grasping at shadows—I had no inner wolf within me.Once, our mate bond had been a beacon for him, but then... he was lost in the dark, finding nothing. The formidable Alpha, his golden eyes wide with dread, looked as though he had been robbed of a piece of his soul.At his side, Selena, puzzled on her hospital bed, prodded, "Harold, what's with you? You're as white as a ghost."Harold shot to his feet. "I can't feel Anita anymore."Selena's irritation flared. "You're here with me, and you're still hung up on Anita? She didn't even have an inner wolf—of course you couldn't feel her. She was just too weak."As Harold moved to leave, Selena clung to him from behind. "Nothing's going to happen to Anita. But look at me—I got hur

It was the wee hours of the morning when Harold finally stumbled in. He reeked of booze, his shirt misbuttoned as if he had dressed in a hurry.I did not understand why dealing with a virus carried by Rogues required drinking, but I did not want to know, either.I helped him into the house, gave him water, and peeled off his shoes and clothes. He was drenched in cologne, like he was trying to mask some other scent.Clutching me close, he slurred, "My sweetheart, you're the best. No matter how late I get, you'd wait for me. If I ever come home and you're not here... I'd lose my mind."I gazed at him, my voice soft. "Silly, have you forgotten the vows we made when we formed our mate bond?""From this moment, our hearts and souls are intertwined, bound by love and truth, loyalty and devotion. Only the Moon Goddess herself could ever tear us apart. However, if...""If you ever betray me, you'll never see me again," I cut him off.Harold's lips brushed my eyelids, his voice smooth,

Together, Harold and I sliced the celebratory cake, sharing it with the whole room. Our friends ribbed us, eager to know where our next romantic escapade would be.Harold finally caved to their relentless curiosity, "Okay, okay, no more questions. We're off to Lunaris Inn later for some stargazing."Out of nowhere, Selena piped up, "Lunaris Inn, that's the spot for lovers—pricey and oh-so-romantic. It's open just once a month, and our Alpha snagged the grandest suite. They say it's a glass palace that glows wild and beautiful in the moonlight... Talk about a couple goals for our alpha and his mate."My polite grin was on the verge of cracking.I was in the dark about such intimate plans, yet Selena was in the know before me.Needing a breather, I stepped outside, only to overhear Selena gossiping in the garden."Anita's hit the jackpot, from a plain Jane omega to the Alpha's darling. She'd be a goner in the woods on her own, but now she's pampered with treasures without lifting

I left the witch's lair behind.Today, I made my way to the Pack Council to hand in my resignation from the pack.As I waited for the paperwork to go through, I scrolled through my phone and stumbled upon a news headline. The Alpha of the Moonshadow pack had ventured into the Dark Forest for a hunt, returning with a rare Moonshadow stone for his beloved Luna.[This gem is a rarity, shimmering with a wolf pattern in the moonlight, only found when a mighty Silver Wolf is taken down on a full moon.][The reporter specifically asked Alpha Harold why he would risk his life to hunt personally. After all, even though Moonshadow Stones are incredibly rare, with his wealth and status, acquiring a few shouldn't be difficult.][His answer? No wealth could match the gift of his heart, and he'd brave any danger for his mate.]The Pack Council staff sighed in awe. "You're keeping tabs on them, too? Alpha Harold and his omega wife, Anita—they're true love, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself.
