Chapter 3

Author: Milk Bear
I didn't want a toy. I only wanted Mom to tell me she was proud of me.

I rested my head against the cold door.

I tried to lift my hand and knock one more time.

But before I touched it, everything turned black.

I was so tired. I needed to sleep.

Then my body felt light.

I felt like a soap bubble.

I slowly floated upward, with nothing solid beneath my feet.

When I looked down,

I saw my own body leaning against the cold kitchen door with its eyes closed.

The wet red star was still clutched in my hand, wrinkled like a tiny wilted sun.

I floated closer and tried to take it, but my fingers passed straight through.

Oh.

I had become a little ghost.

Just like the ones in cartoons, with no feet, floating everywhere while no one could see them.

Ms. Harper had been right. Children who breathed leaking gas could no longer touch their moms and dads.

I drifted through the crack beneath the door.

Mom was holding Lily's hand beneath the gazebo outside our building.

Mrs. Parker, who sometimes slipped me candy, stood beside them.

Mrs. Parker gave Mom a thumbs-up and smiled until her eyes nearly disappeared.

"Rachel, you're the most progressive mother in this whole building. Your ideas are so modern!"

Mom smiled broadly and stroked Lily's hair.

She spoke loudly enough for several women at the farmers'-market stand nearby to hear.

"Exactly. What year is this? Why should anyone still favor sons over daughters?

"My Lily is the treasure of my heart. Boys are tough, so a little punishment won't hurt. Noah needs rules now so he'll learn to take good care of his sister later."

The other women praised her too, calling her a model modern mother.

Mom looked very proud.

I floated beside her and stared at her smile.

I used to think Mom was prettiest when she smiled.

Now I only felt cold, like I was standing in snow without a coat.

Lily gripped Mom's shirt, her face frighteningly pale, and tugged at her hand.

"Mom, can we go check on Noah? I'm scared..."

"Scared of what?"

Mom pinched Lily's cheek, her voice dripping with tenderness.

"I told you the window was open. Your brother is tough. He's probably playing by himself already.

"Come on, I'll buy you the strawberries you wanted, and we'll go home after you eat them."

"No, Mom..."

Tears gathered in Lily's eyes.

"I heard Noah say the window closed. Can we please go back and check?"

"Why are you being so stubborn?"

Mom began to sound impatient.

A woman in a red jacket hurried over, looking alarmed.

"Did you hear what happened yesterday? A family in another apartment complex went shopping and left their child home alone. Gas leaked after the window shut, and the child died before they returned. The parents nearly collapsed. It was terrible."

The moment she finished, Lily burst into tears and pulled Mom toward the building with both hands.

"Mom! We have to go back! Noah is still in the kitchen! I need my brother!"

Mom stumbled when Lily yanked her, and the smile fell from her face.

She was about to scold Lily for misbehaving.

Then Mr. Dalton, the building security guard, came racing toward them on a maintenance cart with a bullhorn in his hand.

"Attention, residents of Building Three! We have a major gas leak. The alarms are going off at the management office. Everyone check your units immediately!"

I floated closer and placed the little red star I had carried all this time into her open palm. She couldn't see it, but I wanted her to have it. I had earned a perfect score. Ms. Harper said I was a good boy.Mom seemed to feel something. She hugged my jacket tighter, buried her face in it, and sobbed while slapping herself until her cheeks turned red. "Mommy is a monster. I lost my mind. Come back and hit me, Noah. Please don't abandon Mommy!"I sat beside her, swinging my transparent feet, and spoke even though she couldn't hear."Mom, I don't blame you anymore. I tasted a strawberry. Lily secretly gave it to me, and it was very sweet. Lily lives with Dad now. He enrolled her in art class. She draws Star Ranger really well, and she says that when she grows up, she'll buy a whole room full of Star Ranger toys for me."I have to go now. A lady dressed in white came for me. She said I'm a good child, so I can go somewhere with all the strawberries and cream cake I can eat."I stoo

One evening, Mom carried out the trash after drinking and overheard two women downstairs discussing her upcoming trial. They said the evidence supported a charge carrying at least ten years in prison. The trash bag fell from her hand. Leftovers spilled across the pavement as her face turned white and her knees gave way. She sat on the ground for a long time, unable to stand.I floated from the living-room chandelier and swung my feet. I had been watching Mom for three days.I couldn't always remember how old I was. Detective Harris said I was six.Oh, right. On my sixth birthday, Mom bought Lily a two-layer cream cake. I stood nearby until Lily secretly put a spoonful of frosting in my mouth. It was so sweet that my cheeks puffed out. Mom glared, and I swallowed quickly without spitting out the pit—oh, frosting doesn't have pits.Ever since I became a light little shadow, I had stayed nearby. I was waiting for Mom to praise me once. I earned a perfect score in math, and Ms. Harper

Lily stood nearby with her faded backpack, both hands gripping the straps and her eyes swollen from crying. At Grandma's words, she rushed to Mom and clutched her shirt. Her voice trembled like a leaf."Mom, I don't want to go to Grandma's. I won't ask for princess dresses anymore. I'll eat properly and study hard. Please don't send me away.""Who asked you to pretend to be good?" Mom threw her hand aside so violently that Lily fell. She glared at my sister like an enemy."If you hadn't touched the stove, would I have locked your brother inside? Would everyone have turned against me? You're a curse. I raised you long enough. Get out of my sight and go live in the country."She stormed into Lily's room and hauled out every princess dress, stuffed animal, and building set. She dumped them into the trash, then threw the silver bracelet Lily had received for a perfect test score into the hallway."Don't take any of this junk. You'll be doing chores on the farm. What use are toys there

Because Mom faced a murder charge and had secretly drained marital funds, the divorce court moved quickly. Dad kept the apartment he had purchased before the marriage. Of the twenty-four thousand dollars left in joint savings, he received eighteen thousand, while Mom received six thousand. The day the final divorce decree arrived, Mom returned from a meeting with pretrial services and found the papers on the coffee table. Dad had packed her belongings beside the door. Lily stood near the couch with her faded school backpack, clutching my dusty red star and instinctively stepping back when Mom entered."Daniel, have you lost your mind? You actually divorced me?" Mom grabbed the decree, tore it into pieces, and lunged to scratch his face."I gave everything to this family. How dare you leave me with nothing? I refuse to accept it!""You don't have to accept it. The court's order is final."Dad shielded Lily behind him and looked at Mom without warmth. "Rachel, I could have demanded

Dad ignored her and walked slowly toward the television. His eyes reddened as he touched the image of my bloodied hand. The week before, he had come home after midnight. I waited by the door with my classroom star and told him I would show him the certificate once Ms. Harper gave it to me.He had been exhausted, but he patted my head and promised to buy me a Star Ranger toy on Saturday. That Saturday would never come."Give me back my son."Dad turned toward Mom, who had collapsed on the floor. His voice sounded scraped raw, his eyes burned red, and his fists were clenched until his knuckles turned white."Rachel, I work twelve-hour days and give everything I earn to this family. I never objected when you wanted to give Lily the best of everything. I gave you whatever you asked for. What gave you the right to kill my son?"I floated beside him and watched his tears fall onto the cold tile. I tried to touch his clenched fist. He seemed to feel something and turned sharply toward w

"Let you out? Not a chance."She shook me off and turned the burner knob. The blue flame went out, but the gas kept hissing. I backed away in terror and called for her. She stepped outside, locked the door from the hallway, and spoke through it in a voice as cold as ice."Stay in there and think about what you did. I'll open the door when your sister says she forgives you."Then Lily appeared on the recording, pulling at the kitchen door and begging Mom to release me. Mom crouched and stroked Lily's head, her tone suddenly gentle."It's okay, Lily. Mommy is only frightening you a little. If you touch the stove again, this is what will happen to your brother. Do you understand?"She picked up her purse from the entryway and clicked away in her heels without looking back.On the video, I pounded the door and called for Mom and Lily. My hands bled, but no one answered. My voice grew hoarse and softer until I slid down against the door, still clutching the dusty red star. My head dro
