CHAPTER 88

A Century Ago

The next morning, Marcus found Irene sitting alone in the old watch tower where the sentries stood guard and alerted them of danger before the new one was built.

She stood by the old protective walls along the edge of the roof staring into the forest. The ancient parapets gave a good view and she was admiring their surroundings maybe for the last time.

His heart ached seeing her lonesome figure standing by the parapet and he could not understand why it bothered him so much. He had many questions but ‘the heart would not respond to him even after several prompts. Now he was forced to approach her.

He tucked his hands in his cloak and approached hesitantly. His eyes were heavy with worry and uncertainty.

“You seem lost,” he said, trying to start a conversation but he failed woefully.

She didn’t look at him or respond. She barely acknowledged his presence as she stared forward.

“You have been avoiding me,” he added.

Silence.

He didn’t give up. “Have you figure

  • The Lone Wolf   CHAPTER 92

CHAPTER 92A Century AgoThe wolves rode at dusk.Their armor glinted in the last light of the sun, and from the cliffs above the valley, their ear-piercing howls rolled like thunder. They were valiant and ready for war. Their armor shimmered and made them look surreal. With swords on their hilt and spears raised high, they rode to the battle line. They did not need armor for battle but it was a habit passed down to them from the first Versipellis who were once human and were used to wearing armor for battle. Now, it was like a culture, a religion to wear armor and hold weapons in battle. They did it to honor their fallen comrades. Not that they needed it with their claws and regenerative abilities. One interesting thing they noticed was that the Vrykolakas had a weakness, and that was steel. Injuries inflicted on the Vrykolakas with steel took longer to heal, and if used with precision, a stab wound to the heart or decapitation could kill them. That was why they all trained using w

  • The Lone Wolf   CHAPTER 91

CHAPTER 91A Century AgoThe sky, still dark and bruised purple, split open in shades of iron and rust, light bleeding across the horizon in slow, heavy bands. In the war camp, movement began before sunrise, quiet at first then growing into a rhythm of war. Weapons were being checked, armor strapped tight, battle sigils painted across skin and steel. Marcus was surrounded by duty, comrades, and noise, yet haunted by silence. On the outside, he was a man preparing for battle while waging a quiet devastating war within. Marcus sat on a wooden bench near the edge of camp, sharpening his blade by rote. The steel made no sound as he repeated the process mechanically. He wasn’t even pressing hard enough. His fingers trembled, so he focused on the movement, dragging the whetstone down, breathing, dragging again, and then breathing, all in a bid not to think. But the memory refused to stay buried. He had sold his people out to the Vrykolakas. He had told them all their battle strategies; t

CHAPTER 90A Century AgoThe allied armies massed in the lowland staging fields, white tents rising like teeth across the plain. The air was thick with tension. The Vrykolakas made no move, but everyone felt it. The final battle was coming. Nature held her breath in anticipation of what was coming. The final victor will be decided soon. Marcus returned before dawn. The sky was still dark, bruised purple, and cold with pre-storm air. Smoke from the outer watch-fires curled upward in thin spirals, quiet and undisturbed. The war camp slept with one eye open, as it always did. Alert and ready for battle. However, no one noticed the shadow of a man who slipped back through the perimeter with mud-stained boots and a shadowed look in his hollow eyes. No one asked why his cloak was torn, and no one noticed the mark on his chest. No one asked why his mark was glowing. And he told no one what he’d learned from his outing. The lines that had faded returned with even more patterns. Darker tha

  • The Lone Wolf   CHAPTER 89

CHAPTER 89A Century AgoMarcus staggered back and shook his head in denial. Whatever this was had to be a cruel joke. What did the heart mean by return, rend, and reset?Reset? The word echoed through him like a bell in a drowned cathedral. The realization struck him like lightning. He thought they would fight and suppress their enemies and they would all bow to him in reverence but now…“You don’t want peace.”“Peace? Peace is a cage. Peace is decaying. This world has stagnated. Stifled under the weight of its survival. I will restore it to what it once was and rid the world of the weak inhabitants that have tainted it.”“But the war took everything from us," Marcus argued.“The war gave you purpose.” The heart whispered seductively.“Don’t twist this,” Marcus snapped.“Tell me, what would you be without the war?” The heart mumbled. “Your kind wouldn’t even exist without it.”“I would be happy with my family.” He deadpanned. The heart laughed sardonically. “And that’s it? Is that wh

CHAPTER 87A Century AgoThe war encampment was still, the atmosphere filled with tension and heaviness. They did not have to speak but the tension in their shoulders was palpable. The war room echoed with movement, maps rolled, armors fitted, scouts reporting every breeze passing over the eastern ridge. Wolves trained from sunrise till dawn, the clanging of steel and barking of orders rising like thunder down the mountain. But beneath it all there was an eerie silence.Heavy.Like the first waiting for the flame.Irene moved through the camp like a ghost. To the soldiers, she was her usual composed, strategic, and regal self. She reviewed formation changes, assessed reports, and consulted directly with the high generals. But under the surface, a storm was brewing within her. She was physically present but she wasn’t fully with them. She was torn. The secret of the relic pulsing beneath her floorboards weighed on her chest. It didn’t help that she could hear it whisper through her
