Chapter 1

chapter 1: The Woman He Stopped Seeing

Scarlett set the divorce papers on the kitchen island and watched Ethan's face for something, Anything.

He didn't even look up from his phone.

He hadn't signed them. Of course he hadn't.

"Ethan."

"In a minute."

"You don't have a minute. You have had two years of minutes and you have spent every single one of them somewhere else."

That got his eyes off the screen, barely. He glanced at the papers, then at her, the way a man looks at a bill he already knows he can't pay.

"You're being dramatic."

"I'm being honest." Her voice didn't shake, and that surprised her. She had rehearsed this moment in the shower, in the car, in the two a.m. silences when he rolled to the far edge of the bed like her body might contaminate his sleep. She had expected to cry. Instead she felt strangely calm, the way the air goes still right before a storm breaks. "You haven't touched me in eight months, Ethan. You barely look at me. I lost the baby and I lost you in the same year, and I am done pretending that isn't true. My body changed after we lost the baby, and instead of helping me through it, you started looking at me like I was someone you didn't recognize."

"That's not fair."

"No. What's not fair is watching the man I married stop looking at me like a woman he wants."

He flinched. Good. She wanted him to feel it, even for a second.

"The bank called again this morning."

Scarlett's expression tightened. "And?"

"They're giving me until Friday." He said it like it explained everything, like it was supposed to erase the last eight months. "I don't have room in my head for this."

"For me. Just say it. You don't have room for me."

He didn't say it. He didn't have to. He picked up his keys off the counter, the same counter where he used to kiss her good morning before work, back when her body was something he reached for instead of something he avoided, and he walked out the door without signing a single page.

Scarlett stood alone in the kitchen of a house that no longer felt like home and let herself breathe for the first time in what felt like months.

She didn't cry until she got in her car.

The bar three blocks from her apartment was not the kind of place she usually went alone, but Nora had texted emergency wine, and Scarlett had nowhere else to put the shaking in her hands. She sat at the corner of the counter, listening to her friend's outrage on her behalf, when the air in the room changed.

She felt it before she saw him. A pressure, low and strange, like the moment before lightning. The noise of the bar seemed to thin out, voices dropping to a murmur, and every head near the door turned without meaning to.

He walked in like the room belonged to him.

Tall. Broad enough that the doorway looked smaller for a second. Dark hair pushed back from a hard, striking face, and eyes that were an impossible shade of amber, gold catching firelight even under the dim bar lights. He wore black like he'd never worn anything else in his life, and he moved like a man who had never once had to wonder if people would get out of his way.

They always did.

His gaze swept the room once, quick and assessing, the way a predator checks a space for threats. Then it stopped,on her.

Inside Draven went violently still. He heard Kael clearly.

Mate.

Scarlett's wine glass paused halfway to her mouth.

He was staring at her. Not the polite, glancing interest men sometimes gave her when they were feeling brave. This was something else entirely, something that pinned her to the barstool and made her pulse trip over itself. His jaw tightened. His nostrils flared, almost imperceptibly, like he'd caught a scent he hadn't expected to find in a room full of strangers.

"Scarlett." Nora's hand landed on her arm. "Earth to Scarlett. Who are you looking at?"

"I don't know," she murmured, and it was true, and it wasn't. Because some deep, unfamiliar part of her recognized him even though she had never seen his face before in her life. Recognized him the way you recognize a name you've heard whispered in a dream.

He started toward her.

Every instinct told her to look away, to busy herself with her wine, to pretend she hadn't noticed a devastatingly gorgeous stranger cutting through a crowded bar with the singular focus of a man who had already decided something about her. She didn't look away. She couldn't.

He stopped close enough that she had to tilt her head back to hold his gaze. Up close, the amber in his eyes looked lit from within, and the low hum in her chest sharpened into something that felt dangerously like heat.

"You shouldn't be here alone," he said. His voice was quiet, rough at the edges, meant only for her.

"I'm not alone." She nodded at Nora, who was watching the exchange with her mouth slightly open. "And I don't know you."

"No," he agreed. "Not yet."

It should have sounded like a line. It should have made her roll her eyes and turn back to her wine. Instead it landed somewhere low in her stomach, a promise disguised as a warning.

"Who are you?" she asked.

He was clearly losing some internal wars. For a moment he looked almost startled by himself, a man unused to being caught off guard.

"Draven," he said. "And you're going to want to remember that name."

Then, before she could ask what that meant, before she could demand an explanation for the way her whole body had gone electric in his presence, he turned and walked back out into the night as abruptly as he'd arrived, leaving her staring after him with her heart hammering and her wine forgotten on the counter.

Nora grabbed her wrist. "Okay. What was that?"

Scarlett didn't answer. She was still staring at the door, at the space where he'd been, feeling the strange, warm pull in her chest that hadn't faded with his absence.

But something inside her had shifted anyway, some door she hadn't known existed cracking open onto a world she couldn't name.

Whatever Draven was, he wanted something from her.

Scarlett didn't know what it was.

She only knew she had no intention of giving it to him.
