CIARAN

Two nights ago, King Rhidian of the Sirens had opened a swirling portal window that flickered with iridescent hues, illuminating my cabin momentarily.

My instinctive reaction had been to terminate the connection before he had even completed his first sentence, a reflex born from years of built-up tension between our two races.

Encounters between our kind were a rarity, regularly restricted to the formalities of ambassadors, not the rulers themselves.

I was not just any ruler, I was a wolf and a leader who had relentlessly spent the past decade reminding him, in various indirect ways, that the vast ocean did not cater to the whims of wolves.

"I have something significant to discuss with you. "Face to face," he had urged, his black hair catching the glint of the portal light.

I quickly brushed aside his request, dismissive of any notion of urgency. Yet, his demeanor shifted.

His voice dipped low and intensely as he leaned closer, his handsome features casting an enigmatic shadow.

ELEANOREven though we were in the cabin, the air in the place just felt too… tight. It was like the Siren King was still here somehow even though I saw him vanish in a water mist. The tense feeling was a morbid reminder that he wasn’t done with me yet.Ciaran hadn’t stopped pacing since he shut the door.He kept moving back and forth, every fiber of his being stretched too tight. His jaw was clenched, and his fists were clenched at his sides.Liam leaned back against the wall, his arms crossed. "You can't simply disregard a king's command, Ciaran,” he said simply.“This isn't a border incident. That was the Siren King."“To hell with his title, Liam,” Ciaran spat back as he finally stopped pacing the living area.“He doesn't get to decide for her," Ciaran snarled, his voice threatening.Liam pushed off the wall, moving towards him. "Maybe you didn't quite hear him,” Liam continued.“He wasn't asking. He was stating what he wanted clearly. And if we refuse, we create war with the Sire

CIARANThe command sat uncomfortably on my tongue after I’d said them. "Stay here, Eleanor."But her eyes, bright and unyielding, burned into me even as Dylan and Liam closed in on either side of me.The bond tightened between us like a wire I couldn't cut, not even if I could help it.I broke free, moving down the short passage between the living area and the entrance door.Dylan matched my pace, Liam lagging behind on the opposite side.We didn't speak until we pushed through the heavy doors and into the drizzly morning. The Siren King waited. He stood in the doorway to the courtyard, his cloak billowing like liquid night. His eyes, the color of shifting tides, regarded me as icy and unchanging. There were no guards or attendants with him. Only him. That, in itself, made my hackles rise up. Kings didn’t come alone. Not unless they had such faith that no one would dream of harming them.Dare I say his short stay here had loosened his guard."I hoped to have seen you sooner," he said,

ELEANOR"I'm not doing this again."Those were the first words I scribbled—well attempted to—the moment Dylan put the paper and pen in front of me.That definitely didn’t work so I signed it."Yes, you are," he replied, dropping into the chair across from me."And before you give me a look like you're planning my murder—your handwriting yesterday wasn't that terrible."I rolled my eyes, and pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. Not that bad meant my letters looked like drunken scribbles."Don't roll your eyes," he said, sliding the pen toward me. "Do you know how many wolves would die by having lessons spoon-fed to them by me?” he asked. A lot. Probably. Definitely."I raised my eyebrows. Really? I signed."All right," he sighed dramatically. "Maybe not much. "Maybe nothing. "But still, you're special,” he continued, taking a seat beside me. “Now come on.” I want you to write your name.I dipped the quill reluctantly, my hand trembling as I scribbled Eleanor across the parch

ELEANOR"You're eating," Dylan announced as he entered the room, balancing a tray filled with food before I’d even managed to fully extricate myself from the warm cocoon of my blankets. The tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread and a sweet, spiced pastry wafted through the air, stirring my appetite and prompting my stomach to growl its eager approval.I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders, shooting him an annoyed scowl."It's not poisoned," he said, shooting me a cheeky grin. Hopefully. But you'll need the strength, because—" He placed the tray on the wooden table with a flourish "—today marks the start of your writing lessons.I raised an eyebrow, trying to ignore his “hopefully” statement. The idea of learning to write ran through my mind repeatedly and, honestly, the idea made me really giddy."Yes, writing." He settled into the chair across from me as if he were perfectly comfortable and eager for the day ahead."And if I can coax our stunning Alpha here into learnin

ELEANOR"I'm moving you," Ciaran's voice echoed in the air before I even fully stepped into the room.I hesitated in the doorway, my fingers still clutching the brass doorknob, and turned to face him.He stood near the window, his arms crossed tightly across his chest, his expression an enigma that left me feeling exposed.Moving me? Confusion rippled through me as I signed incredulously, my fingers dancing in the air with disbelief. His gaze remained unwavering. "Yes. You're too exposed here."I furrowed my brow, the implications of his words swirling in my mind. So, closer to you is somehow safer?Ciaran’s eyes held firm, his expression hardening, though he didn’t seem to grasp the challenge lurking in my signs."What the hell was that meant to mean?" He asked in confusion. Before I had a chance to sign again, Dylan, who had been leaning casually against the wall, stepped forward."She means it feels like a cage,” Dylan said, flippantly.Ciaran shot him an irritated glance. "Then te

CIARANThe western cliffs were a thirty minutes' run from the great hall if you didn't slow down.We didn't slow down.Liam walked with me on my left, Rhidian on my right and Dylan was at our backs, his boots crunching on the grass. There were a pair of guards behind them. The moon was high enough to cast silver over the water when the stench hit—brine, blood, and something so vile it curled the flesh at the back of my throat.Rhidian stiffened. "That's not the sea's fault.""Do you know what that is?" I asked."Not exactly." His pale eyes scanned the cliffs ahead of us. "But I don't like it either."We reached the point where land fell in a straight drop into black waves. The patrol leader arrived, jogging up, panting. "Alpha—over here".He led us down a narrow path to a shelf of rock just above the surface. It looked, on casual inspection, to be a body entangled in kelp. Then it shifted. The creature's arms were too long to be a wolf, its flesh tightened over bulging bones.Bristles
