Chapter 2

Penulis: Fresh Snack
The playful young woman was named Samantha White.

The moment Zane and I walked through the door, she called out in her loud, cheerful voice, "I told you his wife was mad! Zane just wouldn't believe me!"

Then she turned to me with a sweet smile, clearly pleased with herself. "Sarah, right? I'm the one who told Zane you were upset. That's why he went after you.

"Otherwise, you'd still be sitting there sulking while this clueless man had no idea what was going on."

She gave me a playful wink, as if we'd been best friends for years.

But all I felt was a wave of discomfort. Since when did the relationship between Zane and me need an outsider sticking her nose into it?

I didn't respond. I simply walked past her and sat down.

Samantha's attempt at friendliness hit a wall, and she stuck out her tongue. "Okay, so you're mad at me too. You still haven't forgiven me."

The other members of the hiking group looked over.

"What did she do to make you mad?"

"Just because Zane slept in the same tent as Samantha? If his wife ever found out about all the other stuff you two have done, she'd blow a gasket!"

Zane slipped an arm around my waist and lightly kicked the guy, laughing as he cursed him out, "Get lost. Don't make shit up.

"Sarah's not part of the hiking crowd. She doesn't understand how we do things. Keep talking like that, and she's really going to think there's something going on between Samantha and me."

My brows drew tighter with every word.

I couldn't help grabbing Zane's arm. "What other stuff?"

"There isn't anything else." Zane ran his fingers through my hair, his voice affectionate. "Come on, don't listen to their bullshit."

Samantha quickly jumped in to back him up. "Really, girl. There's nothing going on.

"I only sleep in the same tent as Zane because he smells so good.

"All his clothes smell like clean soap, unlike those other guys who reek after being outside all day. I'm not climbing mountains for 12 hours just to lie down at night and get smoked out of my own sleeping bag."

My stomach turned again.

I was somewhat obsessed with cleanliness, so I always carefully washed Zane's clothes, shoes, and socks myself. I loved the clean, fresh scent that lingered on him.

But hearing another woman talk about that scent made something stick in my throat. It felt as though something private between us had been shared with someone else.

Zane seemed completely oblivious. He even defended her. "Babe, don't take anything Samantha says personally. That's just how she is. She's blunt and careless, but she doesn't mean any harm."

Samantha had already gone back to fooling around with the other hikers.

One of them tickled her slender waist, and she burst into a fit of giggles.

Apparently, this kind of interaction was completely normal in their circle.

Meanwhile, I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles.

When Zane saw me sitting there with a dark expression and refusing to join in, he looked helpless. "Still mad? How about I have Samantha apologize to you?"

I didn't even have time to refuse.

The moment Zane called her over, Samantha came right up with her glass raised. "Girl, there's really nothing between us. We're all just buddies. I've just gotten used to saying whatever comes to mind."

I couldn't help thinking that if she knew she had no filter, why was she still acting so shamelessly today, of all days, when Zane had just gotten married?

But she'd lowered her head first, so I didn't make another scene.

I simply tapped my glass lightly against hers. "Don't let it happen again."

We didn't manage to get the divorce agreement signed this time. But it didn't matter. Michael began preparing the paperwork for a lawsuit, and I was in no hurry. The world was vast, and there were still so many places I wanted to see.I wanted to capture its beauty through my lens.Zane watched my vlogs.Every time I posted something new, he'd send me a message. He'd comment on how beautiful the world looked through my camera or tell me I looked even prettier than before. His messages were always full of flattering words, but I never replied to a single one. He didn't seem to mind, though.Zane also often shared his latest hiking trips with me."I go hiking by myself now. I'm not part of any hiking circles anymore, and I don't join hiking groups."Sometimes, I'll hire a local guide. I record everything with my camera too. I want to capture all the beautiful places you can't visit and bring those sights back to you."He even made a flag and wrote a declaration of love for me a

After spending so long away from the small towns of Elaris, I finally began my journey home.Stepping onto familiar soil again felt like returning from an entirely different life. Seeing familiar faces gave me the same strange feeling.Zane stared at me for a long time before finally forcing a bitter smile. "Sarah, you're just as beautiful as you were the first time I met you."I glanced at my reflection in the glass doors.I'd been doing pretty well lately. I didn't have anything to worry about anymore, and it showed. My face had a healthy glow that hadn't been there when I was always cooped up at home, worn-out and disheveled.I gave him a polite smile. "Thank you. But you don't look like you've been doing very well."His eyes were bloodshot, and his hair was slightly disheveled. His features were still handsome, but his cheeks had hollowed out, and he'd clearly lost a lot of weight. His clothes were no longer neatly pressed, and the clean, fresh scent I'd always associated wi

Sarah's POVI saw the news that Samantha's identity had been exposed online.I'd just gotten out of a hot-air balloon in Tavira.Because of my old leg injury, I couldn't do anything too strenuous, which ruled out hiking in high-altitude regions. But I could still visit regular tourist attractions and check places off my list.Honestly, getting out and clearing my head felt pretty good. Being cooped up at home every day really could mess with your emotions. When your entire life revolved around one person, and every bit of happiness, anger, sadness, and joy depended on them, how could you not go crazy? Especially when they never gave you anything in return. While I was in Tavira, I happened to meet a handsome biracial man. He kept winking at me, clearly hoping something might happen between us.In broken English, he greeted me, "Beautiful, you're very pretty. Can I get to know you?"I smiled and politely turned him down. "No. I take relationships pretty seriously. I'm not intere

After blocking Samantha, Zane posted in the hiking group.Zane: [I'm leaving the group for a while.]He handed the admin role directly to another veteran hiker.People kept tagging him in the group, while others messaged him privately to ask why. He didn't reply to a single one. Eventually, he grew so fed up with the questions that he left the group altogether. All he wanted was to win his wife back. But even after he'd gone this far, why wouldn't Sarah respond to him? Where was she? Why wouldn't she turn around and give him another look?He had changed!Zane searched for Sarah like a madman.Whenever he had time off, he rushed to Caldera Bay. Other times, he contacted Sarah's relatives and friends to ask if they knew where she was. But no one had any idea where she'd gone. Zane began asking everyone he knew for news of Sarah. But there was still no word from her. It was as if she'd vanished off the face of the earth. She had even quit her stable nine-to-five job, leaving her coworkers baffled."Our company is so stable. The pay isn't great, but she gets off work early. She could still make it home every day to cook for you. Who knows what she was thinking."Zane drove home. As he waited at a red light, the answer suddenly came to him.Sarah had once had dreams of her own. When they'd first met, she'd been a photographer who constantly traveled for different shoots. After injuring her leg, she'd taken that stable job and devoted herself to being the perfect homemaker, spending all her time taking care of him.Even his love of hiking had started because of her.Back then, Sarah had wanted to photograph the northern lights. He'd followed her all the way to Northvale, and beneath the dazzling aurora, Zane had confessed his love."Sarah, I'll take yo

That day, Zane received a call from the bridal shop."Mr. Hayes, we'd still like to discuss compensation for the wedding dress with you."When he arrived at the bridal shop, he saw the wedding dress he'd stepped on and stained. It was the same dress he'd picked out with Sarah.Back then, he'd wanted to give her a grand, unforgettable wedding, and he'd fallen in love with the dress at first sight. "Babe, this one. You'll look beautiful in it."The bridal shop attendant had told them it was from a celebrity designer brand, one of the most expensive wedding dress labels in the country. A custom-made gown would cost 28,000 dollars.Zane had been more than willing to pay for it. He had the money. But Sarah had been horrified by the price. "I'm only going to wear it once, and you want to spend 28,000 dollars? That's more than two years of my salary."He'd only laughed, slipped an arm around her as she stood in the wedding dress, and leaned down to kiss her. "Silly. Your husband makes
