Chapter 1 One Month Left

Author: Sweetie Moore
The doctor's voice held a trace of pity. "The medication you were taking before had already taken a toll on your liver. Then you underwent a liver donation surgery. Now… if you take good care of yourself, you may have about a month left. I'm sorry. We did everything we could."

I already knew the surgery was risky, but hearing the doctor say it still left me hopeless.

My mind went blank, and the air suddenly felt thin. I forced myself to the window and pushed it open. A blast of cold air rushed in, making me cough violently.

The coughing aggravated the wounds on my hands that still had not healed. Cold sweat and tears welled up at the same time.

I caught my breath and nodded. "Thank you, Doctor. I understand."

I had never been in good health. I could not stay in the cold for long.

Before, Lexi would have immediately shut the window, draped a blanket over my shoulders, and anxiously scolded me for opening it so wide.

But I was dying now. What did a little cold air matter?

As the wind whipped the curtains back and forth, I remembered being rescued from the rival family's basement. My wounds had not even healed yet, and I still had to take painkillers every night just to sleep.

Yet Lexi had brought me my medical records and carefully suggested that I donate part of my liver to Lachlan.

I did not want to donate my liver to Lachlan. Many of the medications I had been taking were hard on my liver, and I could not bear going through a liver donation surgery.

After I refused, Lexi did not say anything. She simply brought me a bowl of chicken soup, saying she had made it especially for me and that I should drink some to build up my strength.

Lexi was a neat freak who had never cooked before. This was the first time she had ever made a meal for me, so I ignored the guilt and pity in her eyes.

Even though I had no appetite, I forced myself to drink most of the bowl.

Then a wave of overwhelming drowsiness came over me.

She took my hand and pressed my finger onto the consent form.

That was when I finally understood that she still wanted to use my liver to save Lachlan.

I used what little strength I had left to grab Lexi's hand and begged her not to make me donate my liver. But she simply brushed my hand away.

"Ryder, Lachlan will be your stand-in someday. He'll save your life. Giving up a piece of your liver in exchange for his life isn't exactly a bad deal for you."

Lexi gritted her teeth. "You were Ryder's stand-in. Now that Ryder is dead, you should die in his place!"Lachlan's body jolted. "Ryder is dead? Don't joke. He's only pretending to be dead to scare you, right?"Lexi let out a bitter laugh. "Pretending to be dead? You still think he's faking it? Do I need to bring Gideon here and have you face him before you tell me the truth?"The moment Lachlan heard Gideon's name, panic finally flashed across his face. Before he could explain, she pulled out a whip and lashed him 99 times. Lachlan screamed with every blow.…At last, Lexi dropped the whip, breathing hard. She looked at Lachlan, his body covered in blood. "I'm tired. Take turns beating him."Lachlan had thought it was finally over. Hearing that, he trembled violently and begged her to stop. She did not even look at him. She simply turned and walked away.He finally broke. "Lexi, you hypocritical woman! Do you really think killing me will make up for what happened to Ryder? Do

"Just you wait. When she finds out what you did, you're going to wish you were dead."Lexi froze.Ryder was really dead?He had died on the very day Tristan had reported back. And it was Lexi who had ordered his death."Are you insane? We're in this together!" Lachlan quickly lowered his voice."Then, you'd better get the money to me fast. Once I leave the country, no one will know what happened. Otherwise, I won't survive. And if I'm going down, I'll take someone with me."Lachlan was silent for a moment."Fine. Tomorrow at 10 a.m., I'll give you $100 million, but you have to keep your word too. Keep this to yourself. If this gets out, you won't survive either."So, this was what had taken place. I had been extremely careful whenever I went out during that time, yet somehow my rivals had still managed to track me down.Someone had leaked my whereabouts.Too bad I did not find out who the culprit was until I was already dead.…Lexi stood there for a long time before rushin

Lexi let out a sigh of relief, then watched the nurse with an almost amused look. The nurse froze for a moment before realizing what had happened. "There must be some misunderstanding. I'll look into it right away."After making a few inquiries, the nurse finally explained, "Mr. Brooks had made arrangements with a funeral service company before his death. Their services included removing bodies."Their team came this morning with Mr. Brooks' authorization and took his body away. That's why it couldn't be found."But Lexi had already lost patience."Tell Ryder the wedding is in three days. If he still doesn't show up, I'm not postponing it. If he doesn't come, Lachlan will walk down the aisle with me instead."Lachlan's face lit up with delight.Lexi gave the morgue freezer a cold look, then turned and walked away without another word.Watching her leave, I could only smile bitterly. Now that I was dead, she and Lachlan could finally be together openly. So, why was she still so

In the end, a female CEO won the jade pendant for $60,000.I took a closer look and realized it was Tessa Cruz, a younger student from my college days.Lexi had looked upset throughout the auction. When she saw that someone paid such an absurdly high price for the jade pendant, suspicion crept into her expression.…In the underground parking garage, Lexi stopped Tessa. "Why did you bid on that jade pendant? It's obviously not worth $60,000."Tessa smiled brightly. "It looks a lot like something an old acquaintance of mine has. If I give it to him, I think he'll be happy."Lexi's expression darkened. "You know Ryder?"Tessa nodded. "He was my upperclassman in college."Lexi's face turned grim. "I'll give you $1 million. Just give it back to me."She quickly signed a check and reached for the pendant.Tessa did not take the check. Instead, she pulled her hand back. "Ms. Wyndham, you didn't win it at the auction. That means it's mine now."Lexi snapped, "That belongs to Ryder.

"Probably. Otherwise, how would an assistant dare act that boldly? Ms. Wyndham isn't someone you can take lightly.""Shh. Don't say anything until it's confirmed. Did you forget what happened two years ago? You gave Ryder a hard time at dinner, and Ms. Wyndham went after you so hard your stock price tanked. She's got a temper, and she's fiercely protective of Ryder. We should watch what we say."At the auction, anything Lachlan wanted, Lexi kept bidding until she won it.Every time she won something, Lachlan would deliberately say loudly, "Lexi, you're too good to me. What if Ryder gets jealous?"His little games were so obvious they were embarrassing to watch.Yet, instead of stopping him, Lexi encouraged him with her eyes. That only made Lachlan put on an even bigger show. The people around them began looking at her with disdain, wondering when her taste had gotten so strange. She kept glancing toward the entrance of the auction hall while repeatedly checking her phone, as if

After this happened several times, Lexi said getting legally married was just a formality. We already loved each other. We did not need a piece of paper. All we had to do was throw a lavish wedding and invite our relatives and friends to witness it.So even the wedding could be used to threaten me.I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't worry about it. I won't bother you anymore."Lexi's hand, which had been soothing Lachlan, suddenly stopped. She turned toward me.Lachlan noticed the change in her expression. "What's wrong?"She stared in my direction for a long moment. "Nothing. I must be exhausted. I think I'm hearing things."Just then, Tristan walked in carrying a box."Ms. Wyndham, the jade pendant you asked me to have repaired is ready. The craftsman did a fine job. Take a look."Lexi took the box and opened it. The pendant had indeed been repaired quite well. Even at a close glance, it was hard to tell that it had ever been damaged.Standing behind Lexi, I suddenly felt like
