Chapter 3

Penulis: Rain Vessel
I never expected that after I turned him down, Timothy would go straight to Cathleen Rosenstein instead.

I was just about to lie down on the empty bed beside Gary's when her taunting message came through.

Cathleen: [Amanda, tonight's your wedding night, and yet Timothy came to keep me company instead. You're not mad, are you?]

She'd sent along a few photos: Timothy sprawled on top of her, fast asleep with a thoroughly satisfied look on his face, his bare chest marked with a few faint scratches. It wasn't hard to guess how intense things had gotten between them just before.

Me: [Cathleen, do you have any shame left at all?]

Me: [You couldn't even afford your own tuition. I used the money I'd saved from part-time jobs to help you. And this is how you pay me back?]

The Cathleen I used to know had been naive, sheltered from the world. We'd met through a club activity in school. She used to trail after me, calling me "Sis" all the time, and something about it always reminded me of my sickly little brother, who was just as obedient and sweet. So I'd gone out of my way to look after her.

I never imagined I'd end up helping someone so ungrateful.

Her reply came quickly.

Cathleen: [Sis, I just love seeing you angry.]

Cathleen: [I used to wonder why you always got to act so effortlessly composed, why you could hand over a small fortune to help me out without even blinking.]

Cathleen: [Meanwhile, I nearly had to work as a hostess at some club just to make ends meet.]

There was a faint smugness in her tone now.

Cathleen: [Then I saw your rich boyfriend, and I understood exactly what your composure was built on. Since you're so kindhearted, I figured you wouldn't mind letting me bask in a little of that good fortune too, don't you agree?]

I sat there holding my phone, not sure whether to laugh or cry. A good deed I'd once been proud of had, in Cathleen's eyes, somehow become the final straw that finished off whatever conscience she'd had left.

Me: [Do whatever you want.]

I texted back, then deleted and blocked her without another word.

A person like that was a parasite. Once Timothy got tired of her, where would she even go?

I thought that would be the end of it, that I'd cut all ties with her.

But the very next day, she showed up at the hospital room, claiming she was delivering a meal.

By the time I got back with Gary's nutrition meal, she'd already been feeding him herself.

"Amanda, Timothy arranged this special meal delivery service for me. You won't have to run out for food every day anymore." My foolish brother grinned, delighted. "Timothy really does dote on you. He's even worried about you tiring yourself out buying meals."

"That really is something to envy," Cathleen added, watching me with a smile, her voice full of false agreement.

I had no idea what she was really doing there. But the moment I laid eyes on her, my stomach turned with revulsion.

"Get out and tell Timothy I don't need this."

I stared at Cathleen coldly. "I'm not an invalid. I can buy my own food. He doesn't need to trouble himself over it."

Just yesterday, I'd told myself I could tolerate Timothy, as long as it meant Gary got to live. But he only kept pushing further.

Gary, not understanding what was going on, looked at me in confusion.

"Amanda, why are you upset? Did you and Timothy fight? It's not because of me, is it?"

Gary was too perceptive for his own good, and I was afraid he'd figure out something was wrong. So I grabbed Cathleen by the arm and pulled her outside.

"We need to talk. Now."

She didn't resist at all, a faint smile still playing at the corners of her mouth as I dragged her away.

"You care about your brother so much. I knew coming here was the right move.

"I know exactly what Timothy's planning. Once you've finally accepted things, he'll take my child and hand him over for you to raise. But I'm the boy's real mother. How could I ever bear to let him go?"

There was something terrifying and unhinged flickering in Cathleen's eyes.

"If you agree to divorce Timothy, I'll make sure Gary lives peacefully until his surgery is over. Otherwise, he. will. die."

Timothy, his eyes red, shoved Joseph aside and lunged for me again."What's between Amanda and me is none of your business.""Don't act like you're still her husband. You're the past now. Amanda's staying by my side from here on."The two of them, unable to agree on a single thing, ended up brawling right there, throwing punches and kicks until it turned into a full-blown fight.Watching them tangled up like that, all I felt was overwhelming annoyance.I pulled out my phone and called the police."Hello, is this the police? I need to report a fight happening at my house."The moment Timothy heard me, he froze mid-motion.He stared at me, stunned, disbelief written all over his face. "Amanda, you're actually calling the police on me, for his sake? Do I really not matter to you at all anymore?"I looked at Timothy coldly, with no warmth left in my eyes at all, the way you'd look at a total stranger."Timothy, there's nothing left between us anymore. Are you only just now realiz

Joseph had looked after me for a very long time. He hadn't just protected me whenever I was picked on, he'd also stayed by my side whenever I was upset. If I'd chosen Joseph back then, would everything have turned out differently? Would Gary still be here with me?The thought surfaced for only a second before I pushed it back down. There was no such thing as "if," only what actually happened. Gary was gone, and all I could do now was live well enough for the both of us.Joseph and I lived together in the old southern town for half a month. The days passed by peacefully, slowly. Every day, I tended to the sunflowers in the courtyard while Joseph went to work. In the evenings, we cooked together, took walks together, talked about everything and nothing.I thought I could just keep going like that forever, forgetting the pain of the past and starting a new life. But then my birthday arrived.I didn't want to celebrate it. To me, a birthday was just another reminder of everything I'

That was when Cathleen finally panicked. She sprawled on the floor, tears and snot streaking her face. She scrambled over and threw her arms around Timothy's legs, sobbing out a plea. "Timothy, I'm sorry. Please don't send me away. I'll never do it again, I swear. I'll make it up to you, I promise...""Get out!"Timothy kicked her off without a shred of mercy, disgust practically radiating off him.Seeing that his mind was made up and there was no winning him back, Cathleen suddenly turned hysterical."Timothy, don't think for a second that this is going to win Amanda back! You think sending me away is going to make her forgive you? It never will."The two of us, we're both going to lose the ones we love. We're the same kind of person."She didn't even finish before Timothy had his assistant drag her out.But he knew she was right. It was his fault. He was the one who, with his own hands, had driven Amanda, the woman who'd loved him for seven years, further and further away.

I practically crawled up the stairs. The closer I got to the room, the weaker my legs felt. My breathing turned ragged, like an invisible hand had closed around my throat, choking off my air.The moment I pushed the door open, I saw Gary's face, drained of all color. His skin had taken on an unnatural, sickly yellow tint, and his once-lively eyes were shut tight.Every emotion I'd been holding back broke apart completely in that instant.I threw myself at his bedside and grabbed his cold hand.Tears poured out of me, my voice cracking beyond recognition. "I'm sorry. I failed you. I couldn't protect you… I came too late. I am so sorry..."I repeated it over and over, crying until I nearly passed out. My throat swelled shut until I couldn't make a sound, only choked, muffled sobs. The nurse stood beside me, silently handing me tissues, her own eyes red.I don't know how long I cried, not until every last tear had run dry and my voice was too hoarse to speak.Only then did I fi

The nurse's words hung in the air.My whole body went rigid. My heart felt like it had plunged straight into ice.I swayed to my feet, my legs barely holding me up.The next second, I lunged at Cathleen like something had snapped inside me. She was still nestled against Timothy. She stumbled backward at the edge of the hot spring, crying out, "Amanda, you've lost your mind! Timothy, help me..."Timothy's brows shot up, and he stood to pull me back. But it was as if I'd lost every ounce of reason. I fought against him with everything I had, and he couldn't hold me back.I ended up straddling Cathleen and slapping her, hard, again and again."You killed Gary!"One slap after another landed."This one's for your ingratitude, for eating off my kindness and stealing my husband, for tearing my family apart."This one's for framing me, for forcing me to kneel and beg, for stripping away my dignity."And this one's for killing Gary. I want you to pay for his life with yours..."Ca

Cathleen's voice had dropped deliberately low on those last few words, and it shattered the last of my composure.Without a second's hesitation, I slapped her across the face."Touch Gary, and I'll bury you right alongside him. I don't want your bastard son. Whoever wants to raise him is welcome to."Cathleen's cheek swelled instantly, blood and spit flying from the blow. She didn't get angry. Instead, she grabbed my hand and used it to slap herself, once, twice, three times, over and over."You're right to scold me. I have no shame, and I betrayed you. I deserve to be hit."But my child is innocent. Please, I'm begging you, give him a chance to live."By the time I realized something was wrong, Timothy was already standing in front of me, his face dark with fury."Amanda!" He seized my wrist and shoved me backward, hard. "That's enough out of you. Cathleen only came here because she recognized her mistake. She wanted to make things right with you."How could you just hit her
