Chapter 2

Penulis: Sweet Pear
[Alessia's POV]

The shocking revelation left my mind blank. I felt like all my blood had been drained in an instant.

Vito had lied to me. He had someone he loved but couldn't have. He'd deceived me. Then what did that make me?

I stood at the doorway, my fingernails digging so hard into my palms that my fingertips went numb with pain. I wanted to storm in, grab him by the collar, and demand an explanation.

Right then, a bodyguard suddenly rushed up to Vito and bent down to whisper something in his ear.

Vito's expression changed in a heartbeat. He snatched his jacket and bolted for the door. When he passed me, his shoulder slammed hard into mine. However, he didn't stop. He didn't even look at me.

I stood there, frozen, feeling the cold spread inch by inch through my body. Then, almost on instinct, I followed him. His car ultimately pulled up outside an abandoned warehouse in Blacklyn.

I hid in the shadows and watched Vito kick open the warehouse door and charge in with a group of bodyguards. Inside, a thug with a face full of scars had a knife pressed to a young woman's neck.

She wore a simple white dress, and her long hair fell over her shoulders. Tears streamed down her face like a broken string of pearls.

The moment Vito saw her, his whole demeanor changed. For the first time, I saw panic, fear, and a raw, undisguised tenderness in him.

"Let her go! Take me instead!" he yelled.

The kidnapper let out a twisted laugh. "I knew I snatched the right person! Everyone out there says you spoil that lawless Donna rotten, but I'm the only one who knows who actually has your heart. It's her, Cecilia Romano!"

Cecilia Romano. Her name was like a poisoned blade that stabbed me right in the heart.

"Because of you, my men ended up dead or crippled over that shipment at the docks!" the kidnapper snarled. "Tonight, I'm going to give you a taste of what it's like to lose the love of your life!"

He kicked a dagger across the floor. "Stab yourself. I might consider letting her go if you do."

"No! Vito, don't!" Cecilia sobbed, crying even harder.

Vito looked at her. In his eyes, tenderness, guilt, and love surged like a rising tide. I'd never once seen even a trace of those emotions in his eyes when he looked at me.

He bent down and picked up the dagger. As I watched in astonishment, he plunged it into his own abdomen without the slightest hesitation. With a wet, sickening sound, blood immediately gushed out, soaking through his white shirt.

My fist was clenched so tightly that my fingernails dug into my palm. I clapped my hand over my mouth to keep myself from screaming.

Vito, a man who wouldn't even flinch when he took a bullet, was willing to die without a second thought for Cecilia.

"Now, will you let her go?" His face was ashen, but he forced himself to stand tall. "Let her go, and you can do whatever you want to me. You can even take my life."

The kidnapper laughed hysterically. "Guess you really are crazy in love with her! All the more reason for me to kill her!"

The bodyguards hidden around the warehouse swarmed in at once. Within seconds, they had the kidnapper pinned.

Cecilia tore free from her restraints and threw herself into Vito's arms while sobbing. "Vito, are you insane? How could you be so stupid?"

He weakly raised his hand and wiped away her tears, his voice so soft and tender. "Don't cry… It doesn't hurt…"

"How can you say that when you've lost so much blood?" Cecilia cried, looking both angry and anxious. She grabbed the bloodstained dagger and slashed it hard across her own forearm. Blood immediately gushed forth.

"What are you doing?" Vito's face changed, pure panic coloring his tone.

She stared at him through her tears. "Does it hurt now? Don't you get it, Vito? When I see you hurt, it feels like I'm hurting right here with you."

She pointed at her heart.

Vito's eyes reddened as he stared at the wound on her arm. Then, he pulled her tightly into his arms and said hoarsely, "I get it now. I'll take better care of myself from now on."

The wail of sirens grew louder and louder as the ambulance approached. Vito was lifted onto a stretcher and rushed into the ambulance.

From beginning to end, not a single person noticed me standing in the shadows of the warehouse. I remained there, chilled to the bone, as if I'd been locked in a frozen tomb.

Then, a shadow fell over me. Cecilia walked up to me. Without a word, she slapped me hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed in the air. My cheek burned with searing pain.

Rage shot straight to my head. Without even thinking, I raised my hand to hit her back.

"Go ahead. Hit me!" She lifted her chin and closed her eyes, her whole body shaking as she cried. "You Morettis have already ruined both my life and Vito's! If he and I can't be together in this life, then I don't see any point in staying alive anymore!"

My hand froze in midair. I stared hard at her and forced through gritted teeth, "What exactly is your relationship with Vito?"

Cecilia opened her eyes and looked at me, a bitter, mocking smile forming on her face. "You want the truth? Fine. I'll tell you."

  • The Lover Who Never Came Back   Chapter 14

[Alessia's POV]Every word was like a knife that stabbed straight into Vito's heart.Rain slid down the sharp lines of his face, mixing with the sting of the slap and the taste of humiliation, leaving him looking more wretched and defeated than I'd ever seen him.He parted his lips to say something, only to find something lodged in his throat. No sound came out. All he could do was watch as I turned away without hesitation and vanished into the curtain of rain after I was done yelling at him.Vito stood downstairs outside my apartment building the entire night. He stayed there until dawn started to break, when one of his bodyguards came to pick him up. He said an urgent order had come in from Nuvak and that Vito had to return immediately to handle family business.Only then did he finally move, albeit like a living corpse. He was half-dragged, half-carried into the car.Back in Nuvak, Vito turned himself into a cold, unfeeling machine. When handling family affairs, he was harsher

  • The Lover Who Never Came Back   Chapter 13

[Alessia's POV]I was trapped between the wall and Vito's body, forced to listen to this belated, overwhelming confession of his. My face didn't show a flicker of emotion, only a deeper, sharper sneer. When he finally finished, he breathed hard and looked at me with a kind of desperate hope. I slowly lifted my eyes, stabbing him with my ice-cold gaze. "Vito, your apology and this so-called love of yours… All they do is make me feel utterly disgusted. Don't ever show your face in front of me again."I shoved him away, straightened my rumpled dress, and spoke with a finality that left no room for negotiation. "Otherwise, I won't hesitate to have the local police escort you out."With that, I didn't spare his suddenly bloodless face another glance. I turned on my heel and walked away, disappearing into the gallery's glittering lights and crowd. I didn't show the slightest hint of reluctance.Vito stood frozen in place, as if every last trace of warmth and soul had been sucked out of

[Third-Person POV]Vito listened in silence, his face completely unreadable. When the elders were done speaking, he slowly lifted his head. The obsession and madness in his eyes made even these battle-hardened men feel a chill run down their spines. He suddenly pulled out the knife he always carried. Under everyone's horrified gaze, he swung it down hard at his left pinky, not even hesitating for a second.Blood spurted instantly as a severed finger fell onto the polished floor with a soft, sickening thump. Vito's face went deathly pale, and cold sweat beaded on his forehead. However, he didn't even flinch. He raised his blood-soaked left hand and spoke, each word hoarse but carrying an ironclad finality. "I, Vito Luca, will have only one wife in this life, and that's Alessia Moretti. Anyone who dares mention me taking another woman—this finger is their warning!"With the most extreme, brutal gesture, he sealed off every escape route for himself and declared his belated, crazed d

[Third-Person POV]When Vito opened the box, it felt like an invisible hand had clamped around his heart and squeezed hard. He could barely breathe from the agony. There were no valuables inside, just a handful of random things. There was a neat stack of newspaper clippings. They were all of him being mentioned or photographed, each edge worn soft from being handled over and over. There were several candid photos of him, clearly taken in secret. The angles were odd, but he was captured sharply in every one. There was also a half-finished sweater. The yarn was the dark gray he often wore; the stitches were crooked, with plenty of dropped loops.Beneath the sweater lay a small card. On it was Alessia's handwriting, carrying a hint of playful arrogance. "Gonna knit a sweater for this walking iceberg so he'll stop looking so cold all the time. Even if he doesn't like it, he still has to wear it! —Alessia."Vito squeezed his eyes shut. His tall frame swayed, and for a moment, he almo

[Third-Person POV]Paolo asked, "What else could I do? Alessia was threatening me with her life. I couldn't just stand there and watch her die, could I? Maybe this is for the best, Vito. You're free now, and you've gotten the medicine. You can finally go save the person you really want to save.""That's enough!" Vito cut him off, his voice edged with a panic he didn't even notice was there. It was then that everything became painfully clear to him. Alessia knew the whole truth. She knew there was someone he loved but could never have; she knew their marriage had started as a filthy transaction. She knew every bit of tenderness and indulgence he'd shown her had all been an act.So, the woman who was proud down to her bones had chosen the most ruthless way to sever every tie with him. She'd walked away from billions in inheritance and given up on Nuvak, the city where she'd grown up. She'd left everything behind, all so she could disappear from his life completely. This was no tantr

[Third-Person POV]Vito's mind went blank.Divorced? He and Alessia were divorced? When did that happen? Why didn't he know anything about it?Before he could recover from the bombshell, the Moretti family's butler shuffled over and handed him a sealed pillbox, a complicated look on his face."Don Luca, this is the special medication for Ms. Romano's blood disorder. Don Moretti told me to give it to you," he said.Vito's head snapped up. He stared at the butler in disbelief. "What? Why is he suddenly willing to hand it over?"The butler sighed. "Ms. Moretti traded everything she had for it. She made a deal with Don Moretti. As long as he gives you this medicine, she'll voluntarily give up all rights to the Moretti family inheritance and never set foot in Nuvak again for the rest of her life."Alessia would never set foot in Nuvak again for the rest of her life. Those words crashed into Vito's heart like a sledgehammer. He went berserk and charged into the main house of the esta
