Chapter 2

Author: Warm Nova
Chloe looked positively smug, the challenge in her eyes growing even more obvious as she met my gaze. "So, are we still playing, Ms. Nolan?"

Noah fanned the flames from the sidelines. "Come on, let's keep going. It'd be such a waste to stop now. I've already lost quite a bit. At least give me a chance to win it back..."

Zachary said nothing. He simply watched me, waiting for my reaction.

I smiled, my voice calm and steady. "Of course we're playing. That last hand was just the warm-up."

I straightened in my chair. "Let's continue."

Chloe blinked in surprise before breaking into a grin. "Sure. So what are we betting this time?"

Her gaze swept over me before settling on the diamond necklace around my neck. It was the birthday gift Zachary had given me last year.

She pointed at it. "I want that."

The corner of my lips curved into a faint smile as I unclasped the necklace.

The diamonds caught the light, scattering brilliant flashes across the room. The necklace was worth three times as much as the bracelet.

Chloe's eyes widened, and she let out an involuntary gasp of admiration.

Around us, my coworkers covered their mouths and whispered among themselves.

"Isn't this a little too much? She's obviously picking on Ms. Nolan."

"Exactly. Chloe's doing this on purpose. Could those rumors really be true? She and the boss..."

The sentence trailed off, but everyone understood exactly what was left unsaid.

Zachary turned and shot the gossiping employees a cold glare.

The room fell silent at once.

Beneath the table, my hand slowly curled into a fist. So it was true. While I'd been pregnant, Zachary had been having an affair.

Seeing that I remained expressionless, Zachary cleared his throat. "Maybe we should forget it. We can just bet smaller amounts."

"No!" Chloe and I spoke at the exact same time.

Zachary looked at me in surprise. "You really want to keep playing?"

I looked up and smiled calmly. "What? Are you worried I'll lose... or worried she'll lose?"

He studied me for a few seconds. A complicated expression crossed his face before he finally nodded. "Suit yourself."

I gathered up my cards. "Let's begin."

This hand, I played even more carefully than before.

Whenever I built a strong hand, I deliberately held back instead of making my move.

I watched Zachary and Noah.

Soon, I noticed something.

Every time before I drew a card, Zachary made a subtle movement with his fingers. Chloe seemed to understand the signal and adjusted her play accordingly. Noah was helping too. He folded the moment that Chloe needed him too.

The three of them were working together to rig the game, and I was the only one paying the price.

The baby's voice echoed in my mind. 'Mommy, that administrator behind you is acting suspicious.'

Tilting my head slightly, I glanced behind me out of the corner of my eye.

Emily Johnson, a junior HR administrator and Chloe's best friend, stood diagonally behind me. She craned her neck, staring directly at my cards.

So that was it. It was no wonder Chloe always managed to avoid my winning hands and somehow stayed one step ahead every time.

I suddenly spoke. "Emily, could you make everyone a fresh pot of coffee?"

Emily jumped, clearly caught off guard.

I smiled at her gently. "You've been standing there for quite a while. You must be tired."

Her face flushed with embarrassment. She glanced at Chloe before lowering her head and walking to the refreshment table to make coffee.

The game continued.

Without her lookout, Chloe started to panic. She kept glancing at Zachary and Noah.

The hand dragged on.

Finally, it was Zachary's turn to draw.

He picked up a card, and his fingers hesitated for the briefest moment. It was a nine.

"I win!"

"No, I win!"

Chloe and I spoke at the same time.

Her hand ranked higher. Under the house rules, the stronger hand took precedence.

Chloe laid down her cards with a triumphant smile. She had an exceptionally powerful winning hand.

"Sorry, Ms. Nolan." Her smile shone with satisfaction. "I win again."

She took my diamond necklace, fastened it around her own neck, and immediately pulled out her phone to take selfies.

A few people chuckled.

Noah was the first to laugh. "Looks like Ms. Nolan's luck has run out today. Maybe pregnancy's affecting her game.

"Everyone kept saying the company's success came from Ms. Nolan's lucky pregnancy. Looks like the real lucky charm is someone else.

"If you ask me, Chloe's the one with all the luck. Maybe she's the company's real lucky charm."

Zachary looked at me. Triumph gleamed in his eyes, along with something else: arrogance.

"A bet's a bet, Claire. You should keep your word."

I kept my expression calm, burying every ounce of anger deep inside.

The baby's voice came again. 'Mommy, don't panic. They're provoking you. They want you to lose your temper. They want you to start making reckless bets. Don't worry. I'm here.'

I took a slow, deep breath, rested a gentle hand over my belly, and murmured, "Baby, Mommy believes in you."

Zachary's parents came to see me.The people who had once treated me with nothing but hostility now stood before me with humble expressions."Claire, for the sake of the seven years you and Zachary spent as husband and wife, please give him another chance.""That's right. The child you're carrying is still a Bush heir. You can't let the baby grow up without a father."I let out a cold laugh. "Mr. and Mrs. Bush, Zachary isn't a foolish man. Before he did what he did, he already knew there would be consequences. Even so, he chose to take that risk. He chose to sacrifice me to satisfy his own ambition and desires."Now that he has lost, he has to accept the consequences. If I forgive him, how am I supposed to face the version of myself that he pushed into the abyss?"You are my elders, so I won't make things difficult for you. But please... don't make things difficult for me either."I opened the door and gestured for them to leave.Zachary's father flushed with anger. I had never

The news of Zachary's removal spread throughout the company that very day.Chloe packed up her belongings through tears.Even her best friend, Emily, refused to spare her a sympathetic glance. "This is all your fault. You dragged me into cheating during the poker game, saying I'd get promoted and get a raise if I helped you. And now look what happened. How are you going to make up for me losing my job?"Emily slapped Chloe across the face.In the end, there was nothing either of them could do except leave.Noah was fired that same day. His subordinate immediately took over his position and began reviewing every financial document he had approved.I sat in the CEO's office and looked around. In seven years, this was the first time I had ever sat in this chair.Back then, Zachary had been the CEO, and I had been the Sales Director.Later, after I became pregnant, he repeatedly tried to persuade me. "Honey, just stay home and enjoy yourself. I'll handle the company."Looking back

Three days passed.Zachary never transferred the money or the shares. He was stalling, trying to find a way out.On the morning of the fourth day, he called me. "Claire, let's meet in the conference room.""All right," I said.It was time to end this.…At 10:00 a.m. that morning, I walked into Zach & Claire Technologies. The receptionist looked away the moment she saw me. "Good morning, Ms. Nolan..."She used to call me "Lady Boss." Now I was Ms. Nolan. Interesting. The conference room was already full. Zachary sat at the head of the table, Noah on his left, and Chloe on his right.Several other senior executives were there as well. They had left the company retreat early and had no idea what had happened during the poker game.Zachary gestured toward an empty chair at the far end of the table. "Have a seat."I smiled but didn't move. "Mr. Bush, where exactly should I be sitting today?"He froze."I own 35% of this company. Surely you know where that seat is."His expre

"You think I was joking?" I asked with a faint smile. "When I signed the agreement, brought in an attorney, and had it notarized, which part looked like a joke to you? If I'd been the one who lost, would you still be calling this all just a game?"Zachary opened his mouth to speak, but I raised a hand and cut him off, "Don't. I don't want to hear another lie."He fell silent.I turned to Chloe, whose face had gone deathly pale. "You owe 40,000,000 dollars. Don't forget to pay up, Miss Moore."Chloe collapsed into her chair, tears streaming down her face."I... I don't have that kind of money..." She broke into sobs. "Mr. Bush... Please help me. You're my guarantor..."A headache struck Zachary instantly. 40,000,000 dollars was no small sum. His net worth exceeded 100,0000,000 dollars, but most of it was tied up in company stock and real estate. He didn't have that much cash on hand.More importantly, he had no intention of liquidating his assets to pay me.A thought suddenly cr

It was an ace.Chloe froze for a split second before letting out a laugh. "An ace? That's your big finish—"Her smile vanished almost immediately.I slowly turned over the rest of my cards. It was a royal flush, the strongest hand in poker.Chloe stared at my cards, her eyes wide with disbelief. "That's impossible... How could you... But you were building a straight! Mr. Bush said that's always how you played—"She cut herself off abruptly. She had realized she'd let something slip. The room fell deathly silent.Zachary took a step forward, but Daniel immediately held out an arm to stop him. "We're still in the verification process. Everyone, please step back."The notary carefully examined the cards before announcing the result. "Ms. Nolan wins."The color drained from Zachary's face. He stared at my cards, then at me. "You... How could you...""How could I win?" I finished the question for him with a faint smile. The moment I smiled, my eyes began to sting. The memories

The game paused.Everyone crowded around Chloe, showering her with compliments while she smiled from ear to ear.Off to the side, Zachary took a phone call with a satisfied smile on his face, as though everything had gone exactly as he'd planned.Noah walked over to me with an expression of feigned concern. "Ms. Nolan, why don't we just call it here?"I ignored him. "We're not done."My voice carried across the room, and the chatter died instantly.Chloe turned to me, confusion written all over her face. "You still want to play?"She waved the signed agreement in her hand. "What else do you even have left to bet?"I sat down and slowly swept my gaze around the room. "All in. I'm betting every share I own, my personal trust fund, and half of my personal assets."The room fell silent. Everyone seemed to think I'd completely lost my mind.Zachary ended his call and hurried over."Claire, enough!" He lowered his voice, anger flashing in his eyes.I knew he wasn't angry because
