Chapter 4

مؤلف: Hyacinth
Near the end of dinner, two lodge employees entered carrying a moonstone Luna crown and a ceremonial cup of moonberry wine.

Ronan had arranged them for me.

Before we left home, he had promised to place the crown on my head in front of the people who had known us before he became Alpha.

Instead, Tessa took the crown from one of the employees and carried it to Chloe.

“You’ve already lost eight years,” she said. “Call it making up for old times. It isn’t a real ceremony. It’s just the blessing game we used to play at camp.”

Chloe shook her head, but she didn’t move away from Ronan.

“I can’t. This should be saved for the woman Ronan chooses as his Luna.”

“It’s only for a minute,” someone said. “Sera won’t make a scene over a game.”

Ronan looked at me.

He knew it wasn’t harmless. The game did not have to be official. By morning, everyone in that room would be telling the packs that Ronan Blackwood had crowned Chloe Hart and shared the Luna’s cup with her.

I waited for him to refuse.

Ronan picked up the crown.

“It’s only a game, Chloe. Relax.”

Then he placed it on her head.

Applause filled the room.

Chloe sat in the Luna’s chair beside him. She placed one hand on the ceremonial cup, and Ronan covered the other side with his. As our former squadmates cheered, they both drank.

There was no kiss or mark. He never touched her like a lover.

That made it worse.

He had taken the public acknowledgment I had waited five years to receive and used it to comfort another woman. He had given away my place without believing he had betrayed me.

His voice came through our bond.

[Don’t read too much into it. I’ll take you home when this is over.]

I lowered my eyes and unfastened the bracelet around my wrist.

The man beside me noticed.

“Why are you still wearing Ronan’s mate token if he won’t even name you as his Luna?”

I closed my fingers around the bracelet and stood.

“You’re right.”

The room fell quiet.

I looked at Ronan.

“A man who won’t claim me in public doesn’t deserve to see me wearing his token in private.”

At last, his composure cracked.

[Sera, sit down.]

It was the tone he used when he expected the entire pack to obey.

In the past, I would have stayed because I loved him enough to keep trying.

This time, I walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Ronan asked.

“Somewhere I don’t have to be hidden.”

He didn’t follow.

Chloe was still wearing the crown, and everyone was waiting for him to finish the blessing.

More than that, Ronan believed I could go as far as I wanted. In the end, I would return to the home we shared and forgive him, just as I always had.

I got into my car and placed the moonstone bracelet on the passenger seat.

Then I opened the bond-rejection form on my phone.

A warning appeared on the screen.

[Rejecting an accepted fated-mate bond may cause lasting pain. Do you wish to continue?]

I pressed yes.

I arrived at the Moon Council ten minutes before the hearing.Ronan was already seated across the conference table. He looked tired, but he was composed. There were no flowers, no Luna crown, and no ceremony papers waiting beside him.He had finally stopped trying to purchase my forgiveness with the thing he should have given freely. The moonstone bracelet rested in my coat pocket. I had carried it with me since the reunion, unsure whether I wanted to keep it, return it, or throw it away. The Council officer reviewed the severance terms and asked Ronan whether he still objected. He looked at me. “I don’t want the bond to end, but I won’t obstruct the procedure.”The officer nodded. “You requested permission to speak.”Ronan folded his hands on the table. “I thought the private parts of our relationship were the real ones. You shared my home, my bed, my mind, and every plan I made for the future. I told myself a public title couldn’t matter as much as that.”His voice roughened.“The tr

Chloe closed the door slowly.“I regretted choosing Ethan,” she said. “When I saw you again, I wondered what would have happened if I had made a different choice.”“Did you regret Ethan, or did you regret not recognizing the future Alpha?”Her eyes hardened. “At camp, you had no name, no position, and no future anyone could see. Ethan was already going to be Beta. Choosing him was reasonable.”“It was.” Ronan’s voice stayed cold. “You had every right to choose the safer man. You didn’t have the right to rewrite your choice and let everyone blame Sera.”Chloe gave a short, bitter laugh. “You don’t get to put all of this on me. You were the one who said you wanted me. You put that crown on my head while your mate sat across the room. I lied, but you were happy to believe me.”Ronan went still.“You wanted to hear that I would have chosen you before you became Alpha,” she continued. “For one night, you wanted to feel like the boy you used to be hadn’t been rejected. Sera paid for that fan

Two weeks before the severance hearing, Ethan Reed, now Pinecrest Pack’s Beta, contacted Ronan. They met in a conference room at Pinecrest Pack’s administrative center. Ethan arrived carrying an old envelope in a protective folder.“The letter was never misplaced,” he said. “Chloe handed it to me herself.”Ronan opened the folder. The first line was unmistakable.[To Ethan Reed, Pinecrest Pack’s future Beta.]The letter praised Ethan’s secure position and described Chloe’s plans to join Pinecrest after training. It said nothing about Ronan.“We dated for nine months,” Ethan said. “She made a practical choice. There was nothing wrong with that.”Ronan kept his eyes on the page. “The lie came later.”“Yes.”“Does Sera know?”“I sent her a photograph the night of the reunion. Someone had posted a video, and I saw people accusing her of switching the letter.”Ronan looked up. “She had this proof before she filed the rejection?”“She did.”“Why didn’t she send it to me?”Ethan’s expression

The Moon Council gave me a protected apartment for the first week.It was small and impersonal, with plain walls and furniture chosen for no one in particular. I slept badly the first two nights, but when I woke, I no longer had to wonder whether Ronan would introduce me as his adviser, his old friend, or nothing at all.I resigned from my position in the Blackridge administration by email. My supervisor accepted it that afternoon and reassigned my remaining work.Blackridge continued without me, exactly as it should. I had left because staying beside Ronan was no longer the life I wanted. On my sixth day away, I submitted an application for a policy position with the Moon Council’s community-relations office. It wasn’t a grand promotion or a reward for rejecting an Alpha. It was simply work that would belong to me, under my own name.Four days later, I returned to the Council building for my final interview. Blackridge was also required to submit my resignation records that morning, s

Before sunrise, Ronan published a statement through Blackridge Pack’s official account.[Sera Vale is my fated mate. We accepted our bond five years ago. I deliberately kept that bond private, and at last night’s reunion, I failed to acknowledge her when I should have. Sera is the only woman I have ever chosen to share my life with.]He reposted it in the old training group. The chat fell silent before messages began appearing one after another.[Sera was your mate the entire time?][Then why did you let us treat her like she was only your adviser?][You put Chloe in the Luna’s chair while your actual mate watched.]Ronan didn’t answer. He sent the statement directly to Sera.[I have told everyone the truth. Come home, and we’ll settle the rest together.]The screen flashed a system notice.[Message not delivered.]She had blocked him.Ronan tried the house staff’s phone and then the pack office line. Neither call went through. At nine that morning, he went to the Moon Council office h

Ronan returned to the Alpha residence shortly after two in the morning. He had called Sera twelve times since she left the reunion. The first call had been declined. The rest went straight to voicemail.By the time he opened the front door, irritation had pushed aside the first edge of unease. He was already planning what he would say. The crown had been a game, nothing more. He had never touched Chloe like a lover, and Sera knew exactly where his heart belonged. The key on the entry table stopped him.It lay beside the photograph they had taken when they first moved into the house. In the picture, Sera was laughing into his shoulder while he held her around the waist.Ronan went upstairs.Half her clothes were gone. The books she had collected over the years had disappeared from his study, and every gift he had bought her remained neatly arranged in the bedroom. She had taken only the things that belonged to her before him.Ronan called again and listened to the automated message.[Th
