Defy Fate

I'm a wolf-less she-wolf, yet I'm the fated mate of Alpha Kayden of the Frostmoon Pack. Every time he stayed out late at night, I couldn't help but worry, and I'd reach for him through the mind link. But to Kayden, that was just proof of my weakness—that I could never handle the duties of a Luna. So he refused to acknowledge me. In front of the elder council, his voice was ice: "Ella has no wolf spirit. Low bloodline. And she's far too clingy. How could she possibly carry the weight of a Luna?" "Only when she stops jumping at shadows and can stand on her own as a Luna—only then does she deserve to wear my ring and bear the honor of a Luna." Half a year passed. I really did stop reporting every worry to him. I stopped chasing him down for proof of his love. Kayden was pleased. He thought I'd finally learned to obey. He announced to the entire pack that he would hold a coronation ceremony for me, making me his Luna in truth. But I no longer wanted to be his Luna. I'd already decided to leave him—for good.

Chapter 1
The firelight in the elder council hall threw the wolf-head totem on the high walls into stark, snarling relief.I huddled in the corner, my thin coat the only shield against the first bite of winter."On the night of the full moon, three days from now, I will hold a coronation ceremony for Ella."Kayden sat on the throne at the center of the hall, announcing his decision to the pack. The room erupted at once. The elders on both sides of the long table glanced at one another. Some sighed. Some shook their heads. And some let their eyes drift straight to me in the corner."A wolf-less one—how could she ever be worthy of an Alpha…""She can't even shift. Our Luna is a waste."No matter how low they kept their voices, a werewolf's ears catch everything.I sank my head lower.A wolf-less one doesn't deserve the Frostmoon Pack. I'd heard it for years. I should've been used to it by now. That topic closed.Next came border defense—the Alpha and the elders. As someone with no place in it, I w

Chapter 2
Half a year ago, none of this had happened yet.Back then, I still believed with my whole heart that if I tried hard enough, I could thaw Kayden's heart.Until that night of pounding rain.Kayden had gone to patrol the border and hadn't come back. Thunder rolled outside, louder with every strike, and I sat on the edge of the bed, my heart hammering in my throat. In the end, I couldn't hold back. I opened the mind link.[Kayden, are you safe? The rain's too heavy. When are you coming home?]Almost instantly, the Alpha's coldness came back through the link.[Checking up on me again? Ella, you need to learn to be independent. A Luna can't be some startled rabbit, jumping at every little sound.][I was just worried about you…]A wave of hurt washed over me.[I don't need that kind of useless worry.]Kayden cut the connection.I pressed a hand to my chest and sat there in the dark the whole night. The next morning, the rain had stopped, and footsteps sounded outside the door.I threw it ope

Chapter 3
The wind of the Forbidden Forest brushed against my cheeks.I pulled my cloak tighter and stepped over the carpet of dead branches, heading deeper and deeper into the woods.Without the strong constitution of a high-blooded werewolf, the journey was brutal.Thorns carved red lines across the backs of my bare hands, but I didn't even think about stopping to tend to them.Compared to the humiliation and coldness Kayden had dealt me all this time, a little flesh wound was nothing. At the end of the forest stood a broken-down wooden cabin. The door creaked open, and the thick smell of herbs hit me at once.By the fire in the corner, a wandering witch in a gray robe stirred a black iron pot."Wolf-less one."She didn't look up. Her voice was low and hoarse."This isn't a place you should be."I walked to the wooden table, untied the pouch at my waist, and poured out every coin inside.Coins of all sizes clinked and scattered across the wood.It was everything I'd saved over the years, doing

Chapter 4
On the night of the full moon, a massive bonfire blazed in the Frostmoon Pack's square. The whole pack had gathered early, waiting to witness the birth of their new Luna. The air was thick with roasting meat, voices and laughter everywhere. To them, this was just another celebration, another thing falling neatly into place.Only I knew. This ceremony was a goodbye.I took my place at the edge of the crowd and looked up at the platform in the center.Kayden stood there in a black ceremonial robe, the Alpha's totem embroidered across his chest. He stood at the heart of the firelight, spine straight, the whole pack's eyes fixed on him. What surprised me was how happy he looked. Like he was genuinely proud of me.In his mind, six months of "training" had finally shaped me into a perfect Luna.I quietly slid half a step back and tightened my grip on the small glass vial hidden in my wide sleeve. The glass was cold, and right now, it was the only thing holding me up.A long, drawn-out howl r

Chapter 5
Three days later, I finally made it out of Frostmoon Pack territory, all the way to the most remote border town. With the last coin I had, I rented a tiny attic room in a run-down inn.Lying on the bed, I felt hollow. The place that had once belonged to Kayden was just an empty pit now.The aftermath of the rejection hadn't let go of me yet. That was the price of being reborn. But pain or not, I was finally free.Come evening, noise drifted up from the tavern below. The attic floor was thin, and I caught every word of a few passing merchants."Did you hear? Something's gone sideways in the Frostmoon Pack.""How could I not? At the coronation, their new Luna publicly rejected the Alpha and ran off in the middle of the night.""That's not even the worst of it. Word is that Beta, Lydia, found letters in the Luna's old room. Proof she was colluding with another pack. Right now the whole pack's in chaos."I leaned against the wall, listening to them blow it bigger with every retelling, and

Chapter 6
Night fell, and the heat inside me was close to spiraling out of control.I stumbled out the door, dodged the noisy crowd, and fled along a back path toward the forest outside town. This power was too wild. It would crash through my sanity at any moment. And if I lost control, I'd hurt innocent people. The forest at night was dead silent, only moonlight cutting through the canopy.Another wave of heat rolled off me, and suddenly my whole body was in agony. But this was different from the bond breaking. This felt like my bones were snapping inside me, one inch at a time, then knitting back together at impossible speed. My knees slammed into the mud. My vision started to blur. The skin on the back of my hand split open, and thick silver-white fur pushed up through flesh and blood, layer over layer. The pain peaked, and then, just like that, it stopped. A rush of fullness flooded in.My sight rose sharply, then dropped. By the time my front paws landed solid on the fallen leaves, the whol

Chapter 7
Before dawn, I shifted back to human form.I dug an old cloak out of an abandoned hunter's cabin, threw it on, and leaned against a boulder by the creek to rest.A few unfamiliar scents drifted in on the morning wind.I rose to my feet, wary, and the white wolf's dominance bled out on instinct. The brush parted, and four tall werewolf guards in light armor stepped through. No hostility. The moment they felt my dominance, they dropped to one knee in unison and bowed their heads.Their leader held out a gold-stamped letter with both hands. A royal crest marked the seal."Honored Lady Ella."I didn't quite know what to do with myself. After all those years as a wolf-less one, it was the first time anyone had called me that. The guard bowed his head even lower."His Majesty, Alpha King Marcus Winters, formally invites you to the palace."Alpha King Marcus Winters. The name came back to me. The man at the very top of the power pyramid, ruler of every pack.I took the letter and gave a sligh

The royal hall blazed with light as the grand banquet officially began.Marcus got held up by a few elders and told me to head into the hall first. The moment I stepped inside, a familiar voice cut through the air."You've actually got the nerve to show your face here."I turned. Kayden Ashford, his expression dark as a storm."No word for days. I figured you'd died out in that forest."He closed in on me, step by step, teeth grinding."Forcing a mate bond apart with that filthy trick of yours. Betraying the Frostmoon Pack. Colluding with another pack. Ella, who gave you the guts to waltz into a royal banquet and act like you own the place?"Seeing the man I once loved again, and the first thing out of his mouth was this."My life or death has nothing to do with the Frostmoon Pack anymore."My voice was ice."Nothing to do with it?"Kayden let out a cold laugh, something violent flickering in his eyes."You think drinking some mystery potion erases the bond between us? I'm still your f

Marcus walked out from the parted crowd. The royal pure-blood Alpha dominance rolled outward, and the unrest in the banquet hall settled in an instant.Kayden saw Marcus and forced himself half upright."King! This woman used a forbidden potion to sever a mate bond. She faked her bloodline. And she colluded with another pack, betrayed the kingdom! Give the order to arrest her, hand her over to me, and I'll take her back to the Frostmoon Pack for judgment!"Marcus looked at the man who'd lost his mind and let out a cold laugh."Judgment? You want to judge my queen on my land?"The words landed, and whispers rippled through the hall again. Every look thrown my way was pure shock.Kayden froze, his face blank with disbelief.Only then did he notice. There was a new mark on my neck. The place that had once belonged to him, the woman he thought he'd never lose, now carried someone else's eternal mark."Since you brought up collusion with another pack, perfect timing. I have a few things of

The coronation ceremony was held in the royal palace's main hall, right on schedule.Bells echoed across the mountain peak. After twelve long chimes, I stepped onto the long carpeted staircase. On both sides, representatives from every pack dropped to one knee and bowed their heads to the new queen. At the end of the red carpet, Marcus stood before the throne, his hand extended toward me.In those ice-blue eyes, there was no scrutiny, no arrogance. Only open, unmistakable favor when he looked at me.I didn't hesitate. I put my hand in his.He led me around to face the hall, looking down at the bowed crowd."Today, in the name of the Alpha King, I crown Ella Winters."Marcus's low, commanding voice filled the hall."From this moment on, she shares with me the glory and the power of this kingdom. Any offense against her is an offense against the crown!"I looked out at the crowd below, at the faces that had once mocked me as a "wolf-less one" back in the Frostmoon Pack. Now they were pre
