Zayden's POV

Seraphine had taken the armchair by the window sitting in a perfect posture, and I had taken the one across from her, which put the table between us and the courtyard behind her. Down there the mourning lanterns burned blue in the dark, and the light climbed the glass and settled on the ceiling in a steady shimmer. A tea tray sat untouched between us. She didn't drink tea, so I asked for wine. Kael had gone out to the corridor the moment I came in.

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   56. The Executioner.

In Yvaine's POV.Due to the stitches and bandage I have on my hand, my job had changed, and the strangest part was that I was enjoying it.Anita changed my bandage every evening, humming something tuneless, she had been so upset when I told her what happened, and I can see in the kitchen how she was always on a matter or another with Judy. It was her way of getting back on my behalf. I wouldn't lie, Anita seemed genuine about her care for me, and if she was actually pretending, then she should be a well paid actress. My job involved no lifting or scrubbing. The physician's orders had been passed down to Madam Marlowe like a royal decree, and Madam Marlowe, who seemed to love a good loophole, had found me work that used the only parts of me still in working order: my eyes, my memory and my mouth. The palace had opinions about this. Oh they talked a lot, and my names were many. I heard them everywhere, pitched exactly loud enough to reach me. In the linen rooms. In the corridors. Behi

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   55. Stolen Kisses, Split Lips

Zayden's POV I woke to a soft breathing. It was slow and warm against the side of my neck, and a small weight was pressed along my arm that had not been there when I fell asleep. Under both, there was a scent of sun after rain on a warm step, crushed mint, clean cotton. Except this morning it carried something else, my own soap on her skin, and I found I did not mind that at all. I did not mind at all.I opened my eyes.Yvaine had rolled all the way to my side. The bed was wide enough for six people. I had stayed exactly where I lay down, on my own edge of the bed, with a respectable arm's length of linen between us, and at some point in the night she had crossed all of it. Her cheek was pressed to my shoulder. Her unhurt hand was curled into the sleeve of my shirt like a child's. The bandaged one lay on the pillow, held away from me, as if even asleep she knew to protect it.I turned my head. My mouth brushed her hair. Then I lay very still and let myself smile, because there was n

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   54. Not My Type.

Yvaine's POV.Before I understood what he was doing, his fingers found the zip at the back of my dress, and I leapt away from him so fast I nearly hit my bandaged hand on the doorframe. I backed around to the far side of the tub and turned to face him, glaring."What are you doing?""You need to take off your dress to bathe.""I'm not bathing. And you are not touching my dress."Zayden's brow lifted. "Will you let me do it nicely, or the other way?""Do you hear how that sounds?""I don't care how it sounds. Come here."I wrapped my arms around myself, the good one over the bandaged one, and eyed him like a cornered animal. He studied me for a moment, then let out a short, dry breath that was almost a laugh."Let me be clear, so you don't have any ideas. I am not attracted to scrawny, sharp-tongued maids who can't walk down a staircase without crashing into it, who have hair like a bird's nest and a mouth like a kitchen knife, and all bad decisions. You are not my type. So inventing r

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   53. Four Stitches.

Yvaine's POV.I looked at the bed beneath me, then at the man at the desk with his back to me, his shoulders drawn tight under his coat, then at my own bloodied hand. I could not decide which of the three frightened me most. The blanket he had wrapped around me smelled of cedar and smoke, and under that something warmer that I was beginning to recognize as simply him. The fire in the hearth had burned down to a low orange glow, and the shadows along the stone walls leaned toward the bed as if they were listening. I pressed my hand against my stomach to keep the blood off the sheets. It was too late. A small dark spot had already bloomed on the white cotton, and I stared at it, mortified.Zayden shrugged off his coat and hung it over the chair. He went into the bathroom, and I heard the tap run and stop. When he came out, his hands were clean and he was in nothing but a fitted shirt, the fabric drawn across his shoulders and the long lines of his back, showing far more of what was unde

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   52. Bloody hands.

Yvaine's POV His grip closed on my wrist, and a muscle moved in his throat, his eyes dropping to my hand as if it had said something terrible. For a heartbeat he looked like a man who had been struck and had not yet decided where it hurt.My heart gave a hard thump because of the suddenness. He had not spoken, he stood in the middle of an empty corridor staring at my fingers. Here it comes, I thought. A lecture about my carelessness and clumsiness. I have ruined two gowns in one day. I tried to pull my hand back behind me and stepped away, and that was when I saw the blood on him. My blood had smeared across his knuckles and into the cuff of his white sleeve, bright against the black. He almost stepped forward. I saw it, his shoulder leaning in. Then he stopped himself, and the space between us stayed exactly where it was.Because I was so tired, and so afraid of wet stone and the dark, it fell out of me in a rush. "I don't want to go to the cell." I said.I could not look at him.

  • The Cursed Alpha King's Forbidden Luna   51. How Did He Know?

Yvaine's POV I climbed the stairs with a tray in my hands and a grudge in my chest, and I could not decide which weighed more on my mind. The word he said kept circling back. Zayden had looked at me in that hall the way a man looks at a stain on a tablecloth, and I could not stop turning it over. He could have shouted. He could have done anything but look at me with those shut eyes, as if I were a stranger who had broken something of his. I told myself it was for show. and it was starting to sound like a lie I was feeding a child. So I blamed Madam Marlowe instead, because it was easier to blame her. It had been her idea to offer me up as penance, and she had said it so warmly with her hand pressed between my shoulder blades. I decided I resented her. Then I remembered her hand smoothing my hair, and the resentment went out of me like air from a bellows, which only annoyed me more. The truth was simpler, and I liked it less. A part of me did not want to do this at all. There had been
