My blood turned to ice when I heard the man’s raw, guttural voice ringing out to challenge us. Hell no, one way or the other, I’m getting out of here!

Rowan froze, his arm still braced across me to shield me from harm. Before he could react, Kieran emerged out of nowhere with his claws flexing at the sides. He gave me a brief, concerned look, then turned around to face the man who had challenged us.

The humans laughed in a frightening, half-crazy sort of way, one of them yelling, “You think we didn’t hear you all crawling about in the dark? Wolves or rats, makes no difference, at the end of the day, they’re all animals.”

“Show yourselves, cowards!” another shouted.

That was all the motivation Kieran needed, and he stepped forward without hesitation. “Then come meet your deaths,” he said, his voice flat without any emotion.
