The Big Reveal

I pushed off the rug, brushing at my wrinkled dress like that would erase the fact that I’d just let myself collapse into Rowan’s arms. Again.

“Thank you for your help but I… I can’t stay here with you anymore… I have to go.”

He rose quickly the same way I did, hovering over me while checking my face for something, anything that indicated I didn't mean it. “What do you mean? Go where?” he asked

“Anywhere that isn’t here. Back to my room, I guess. I wish it were back to my real life, but what can I say? Since when have I ever gotten what I want?"

The second I said those words, his eyes narrowed with concern for me. “This again? Your real life?”

Shit.

I folded my arms, hugging myself tight to fight the cold. I had left Rowan's arms, and so I didn't have his warmth anymore. “Forget I said that.”

“No.” His tone sharpened, speaking more seriously now. “Try to explain. I've never understood what you meant when you talked about this. I always assumed you were unwell, but it sounds like you

I yelped, scrambled back, and nearly tripped over my own dress. "What the actual..."A man shifted in the sheets, blinking at me through a curtain of greasy hair. His face was hidden in shadow and half-bloodied. One eye looked sharp and clear; but the other was ringed with swelling and dark bruises. I had never seen him before in all the time I'd spent around the pack, but even as I couldn't recognize him, could tell that he was probably really handsome under all that bruising, but what the hell was he doing in my bed?"Well," he groanded, voice rough with exhaustion. "Took me long enough to find you."I froze. He was human, and I didn't need wolf senses to know it. His eyes were just a regular brown, not the bright flashy colors werewolves usually had, and there was no scent of power or any anything, just the stink of dirt and sweat. And somehow, this stranger had ended up in my bed."Okay," I said, holding up my hands. "I know I'm irresistible, but breaking into my room and taking

The sound of the rip echoed through the corridor, and we both lost our balance and fell down, staring down at the book stretched between us, or rather, the two halves of it. The leather binding had split clean, the pages ragged and fluttering, and even though my half still pulsed faintly with that strange glow, Serenya's half sat dark and heavy in her grip. For a moment, neither of us spoke. My chest rose and fell asleep I breathed heavily with shock and effort, like I'd just run a marathon."Well," I said finally, face-palming, "Congratu-fucking-lations, librarian. We just broke your precious antique, I hope you're happy!"Serenya's mouth pressed thin, equal parts anger and fear. Her fingers clutched her half of the book so tightly that her knuckles went white. "Do you have any idea what you've done?""You mean what we've done, because you're not blaming this on me too, are you?""This isn't a joke, Iris." Her eyes flashed with frustration, "That book was bound in sacred rites, ever

Rowan shifted his weight subtly, his arm still hovering near my waist like he wasn’t sure if he should pull me closer or step back.Meanwhile, Serenya took two steps forward into the candlelight, her dark robes swishing against the floor. She bowed her head just enough to acknowledge me. “Luna. May the Moon Goddess's favour be upon you.”Her voice was respectful, but the undertone Iris could hear the disapproving tone in it all the same.“Serenya,” Rowan said quietly. “It's late. What brings you here?”She didn’t answer him right away, swept the room once again, stopping at his grip around her waist, before she finally looked him squarely in the face. “Alpha Rowan. With my deepest respect, your people need you on patrol tonight and Marcus is currently doubling his route to cover for you. I suggest that you please reconsider spending valuable time here, with someone else's mate.”Rowan’s jaw flexed with annoyance before shaking his head, annoyed that even though he didn't want to agre

The air between us stayed heavy after Rowan's words.I wanted to tell him that everything had already changed the second I got dumped into this world with no warning, no manual, no gentle introduction to the fact that werewolves actually existed and apparently, for whatever fucking reason I was supposed to help lead them. But I didn't have it in me, so instead, I stayed pressed against him, resting my cheek against the solid wall of his chest, and listening to the rhythm of his heartbeat as he stroked my hair."I know," I whispered, sighing. "And I don't know if I'm relieved or terrified.""Both," he said, voice rough around the edges like he'd swallowed gravel. His fingers kept brushing through my hair, gently at first so that I almost didn't feel it, then bolder when I didn't pull away. "That's the right answer." He continued. "Anyone who isn't scared of what's happening between us is an idiot."I pulled back enough to see his face, immediately regretting it when those dark eyes m

The library door opened wider, and Rowan stepped through as if he owned the place. Which, in a way, he almost did. An Alpha never asked permission, not even on another Alpha’s land. Speaking of being on another Alpha's land, I rolled my eyes in annoyance and tried to wipe my tears away. Why did he have to keep following me everywhere? “Rowan? How did you get... I really can't deal with you right now.” “Just checking your prison,” he said flatly, his eyes scanning the shelves, and the melted candles, as well as the book I still held on to. Then his gaze returned to me with suspicion. “Keeping both our packs safe is, unfortunately for all of us, a collective effort. We have to work together to patrol the grounds at night, and that's why I'm here. And you, why are you crying?” “I’m not..." But my voice cracked, betraying me. My throat burned, my chest felt hollow, and I hated that he saw me like this. Rowan moved closer to me like he was approaching something fragile. “Iris.”
