The next morning, Maya woke up with a heaviness she couldn’t name.

Tobi’s words echoed in her mind:

“You’re falling for him.”

“That’s what scares me.”

But when she checked her phone, there was no message from Adrian.

None.

Usually, he texted before 9 a.m.

Good morning, Maya.

Have a great day.

Did you sleep well?

But today—silence.

Maya’s chest tightened… but she told herself not to overthink it.

Not yet.

She got ready for work, replaying last night like a movie she wished she could pause, rewind, and rewrite.

Around noon, she finally received a message.

Adrian:

“Hope you’re okay today.”

Nothing else.

No emojis.

No warmth.

Just polite distance.

Maya stared at the message too long.

This wasn’t him.

He was holding back.

Protecting his heart.

Because he’d seen Tobi.

Because he’d felt the energy.

Because he didn’t want to compete—but he was already hurting.

She typed back quickly:

“I’m okay. Thanks.”

Then deleted it.

Too dry.

“Yesterday was really nice. Thank you.”

Deleted again.

Too forward.

Finally:

“Hope you’re good too.”

She hit send.

It felt… small.

Just like his message.

A reflection of where they stood now.

By evening, as she walked out of work, Maya saw someone leaning on a car near the gate.

Tobi.

Her heart dropped.

He straightened when he saw her.

“You didn’t pick up my calls,” he said.

“I was working.”

“I know. I waited.”

Maya blinked.

“Tobi… you waited outside my office?”

He shrugged casually.

“I wanted to see you.”

Her stomach tightened.

This was new.

This was… effort.

“Tobi, don’t start something you can’t finish,” she said quietly.

He took a slow breath.

“I’m not starting anything. I’m trying not to lose you.”

His voice—the sincerity in it—hit a weak spot she tried so hard to hide.

But she stayed firm.

“Tobi, you don’t get to panic because someone else is treating me right.”

That stung him.

She saw it in the way his jaw clenched.

“I’m not panicking,” he muttered.

“I’m just—”

He stopped.

“What?” she pushed.

Tobi looked at her with a mixture of jealousy and vulnerability she’d never seen in him.

“I’m realizing I messed up,” he murmured.

“And now I’m scared it’s too late.”

Her heart twisted.

But before she could respond—

her phone vibrated.

A message from Adrian.

She didn’t open it.

Tobi saw the name flash on the screen.

His expression changed instantly—darkening, tightening.

“Are you going to answer him?” he asked, voice rough.

Maya tucked her phone into her bag.

“No.”

Tobi stepped closer.

“Good.”

She frowned.

“Don’t get comfortable. I didn’t answer because I didn’t want to do this conversation with you angry.”

He ran his hand over his face, frustrated and jealous all at once.

“Maya, I’m trying. Doesn’t that count for something?”

She met his eyes.

“It does,” she whispered.

“But trying is different from choosing.”

That sentence hung in the air, heavy and true.

Later that night, when Maya finally opened Adrian’s message, her chest tightened.

Adrian:

“Just wanted to say goodnight.

I’m giving you space.

Didn’t want you to feel overwhelmed.”

Space.

He wanted space.

Her heart sank.

She typed slowly:

“I don’t want space from you.”

But she didn’t send it.

She erased it and wrote:

“Goodnight, Adrian.”

It felt wrong.

Too formal.

Too distant.

But she clicked send anyway.

A minute later, Adrian responded:

“Goodnight, Maya.”

Short.

Cold.

Controlled.

He was protecting himself.

He was also slipping away.

Maya lay on her bed staring at the ceiling, feeling emotionally tugged from two sides.

One man finally showing up.

Another man slowly walking away.

And she didn’t know which loss scared her more.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

She opened the door.

Tobi stood there again, hands in his pockets.

“Maya,” he said quietly, “can we at least talk?”

She hesitated.

This was how he worked—

leave a gap wide enough for him to slip through.

But the look in his eyes…

the confusion…

the jealousy…

the fear…

It made her step aside.

He walked in.

Closed the door gently.

Turned to her.

And whispered:

“I don’t want to lose you to him.”

Her breath caught.

This—this push, this sudden desperation—

was the beginning of chaos she wasn’t ready for.

But her heart…

her confused heart…

was already tangled.
