Chapter 5

Author: Eternity
"It wasn't me."

For once, I didn't grab Adrian's arm or turn on Vivian in a jealous rage. I unlocked my phone and pulled up my location history.

"I've been on the estate since four this afternoon. Check the front gate, the garage, or the back entrance. There are cameras everywhere."

Adrian glanced at the screen.

He could have verified my story with one order. He didn't. Vivian's injuries had already given him the answer he found easier to believe.

I pushed myself upright, my head pounding. "Check the footage. Check my phone. I never left."

Vivian stepped into the room and opened her coat. Bruises and scratches covered her neck and shoulders.

"I've backed down again and again," she sobbed. "Why won't you leave me alone?"

The last hesitation vanished from Adrian's eyes.

"Why do you keep forcing me to punish you, Elena?"

He sounded wounded, as though I had cornered him rather than the other way around.

That was his trick, even with himself. Every time he hurt me, he handed the blame back first. I wouldn't admit I loved him. I was jealous. I attacked Vivian. I made him use his authority.

As long as I forced his hand, he never had to admit he was choosing to break his mate.

"Because I didn't do this."

"You always have an excuse."

He looked toward Caleb, who stood outside the door. "Take her to the underground discipline hall. Three hours, level-one discipline. No weapons, no silver, no sexual humiliation, and no permanent damage."

A roar filled my ears.

The hall was supposed to punish pack members who seriously defied an Alpha. In reality, men who enjoyed violence had taken control of it years ago.

Three years earlier, a young wolf had almost died there. I demanded the place be shut down. Adrian accused me of undermining his rule and merely replaced the supervisor.

"Rules keep everyone in line," he'd said.

Now he was handing me over to a system he knew had already failed.

I lunged for the desk, grabbed a silver letter opener, and held it against my throat.

"If you're sending me down there, kill me now."

Every trace of color left Adrian's face.

"Put it down."

He moved slowly, his voice dropping into the tone he once used when my trauma took over. "Lena, look at me. Give me the knife."

His Alpha pressure disappeared. What replaced it was raw, almost frantic pleading.

"I won't send you. Just put it down first."

The terror in his eyes was real. He was afraid I would die.

He had never been afraid enough of the way I was living.

Vivian suddenly ran toward the second-floor terrace.

"Forget it! I'm the problem. Once I'm dead, the two of you can stop fighting over me."

She climbed the railing and jumped into the landscaped trees below.

"Vivian!"

Adrian spun around.

The letter opener slipped from my hand.

Vivian injured her leg and cut her forehead, but she remained conscious. Curled in Adrian's arms, she looked over his shoulder at me and smiled where only I could see.

She had won.

Adrian lifted her. Before leaving, he looked back at my bare feet among the broken glass and at the thin streak of blood the letter opener had left on the carpet.

His mouth moved, but Vivian moaned in his arms.

Whatever he meant to say went with him.

The ambulance arrived. Adrian carried her inside, then turned to Caleb.

"Three hours," he repeated. "The second the time is up, release Elena."

As the doors closed, I heard him add, "Call me as soon as a doctor confirms she's safe."

That message never reached anyone who cared whether I survived.

Even if it had, it wouldn't change the choice he'd already made.

He sent me into hell and asked the devils to be gentle.

The iron door of the discipline hall locked behind me.

Lights snapped on one after another. More than a dozen masked men stepped from the shadows.

Their leader rolled up his sleeves, nudged a padded restraint baton across the floor, and played a voice message.

[Alpha said three hours,] Vivian murmured through the speaker. [I want her to remember forever which woman he chooses.]

The men laughed.

The heavy lock slid into place, and my wolf howled inside my head.

The termination would take effect in three days.

For the first time, I wondered whether I would live long enough to be free.

Vivian lunged just as the side door crashed open.Julian and Adrian entered at almost the same moment.Julian had responded to my emergency alert from the front of the venue. Adrian had been outside, planning to deliver the final severance documents to my lawyer after the launch. He knew I didn't want to see him and never intended to come inside. The alarm sent both men running in the same direction. One was the future I had chosen. The other was the past finally learning to let go.Julian pulled me behind him. Adrian used Alpha speed to tackle Vivian and lock her wrist before she could trigger the explosive.Security rushed in to disarm the device. In the chaos, Vivian drew a short blade from her boot."You want to protect her so badly?" she screamed at Adrian. "Then die for her."The knife drove into his abdomen. He could have dodged. I stood directly behind him, and moving would have sent the blade toward my chest. He took it without hesitation.Blood spread across his shirt, and th

Adrian remained on Azure Island, but he didn't approach me again.Instead, he submitted a confession to the Pack Council. He admitted abusing Alpha authority, restricting his mate's freedom, and creating the conditions that allowed others to torture me. He also surrendered his right to inherit Silverpine leadership. The hearing was livestreamed.Blackwood lawyers prepared a defense showing that he had never authorized the worst electrical settings, the overnight beating and water torture, or the second bag of blood.Adrian refused to use it."I can explain that I didn't intend the injuries to go that far," he told the Council. "I can't pretend I wasn't the man who handed her over."He stood inside a silver restraint circle and accepted twenty-four lashes. Before each one, the clerk read a charge: unlawful confinement, coercion, enabling torture, forced blood donation, permanent harm to a mate.By the final strike, Adrian could barely remain upright. He looked into the camera. "I'm not

Three months into recovery, I turned down Julian's offer to join Cross Technologies and applied to an independent game studio instead. Before becoming Luna, I had won a national game-design award. After mating Adrian, I abandoned that career and spent my life managing his schedule, solving pack disputes, and making Silverpine run smoothly enough that nobody noticed how much work I did. When I sat in front of a development screen again, I could barely remember what it felt like to work for myself.During my first week, I made mistakes in basic code. Coworkers challenged my ideas in meetings and sent entire designs back for revision.Strangely, those ordinary failures made me feel safe. They criticized my work, not my bloodline, my mate status, or whether I deserved to be loved. For the first time, a mistake was only a mistake. It wasn't evidence someone could use to punish me.Julian never rushed my feelings. He brought soup when I worked late, remembered my therapy appointments, and st

The first second I woke, I thought I was still underwater. My lungs burned with the memory of drowning, but the only sound around me was the steady pulse of hospital equipment. Sunlight spilled through white curtains, and beyond the window, waves rolled against a bright blue shore."You're finally awake."A tall man entered carrying a glass of warm water. His eyes were green and calm. He didn't carry the crushing scent of a dominant Alpha. Instead, he smelled like pine after fresh snow, steady enough that my wolf didn't hide."You've been unconscious for two weeks," he said. "Physically, you're out of danger. The doctors think you stayed asleep because some part of you didn't want to come back."There was no judgment in his voice.I looked down. Nothing bound my wrists. The door wasn't locked. A phone, passport, and bank card waited on the table beside me."Those belong to you," he explained. "When you're ready to leave, no one here will stop you."I stared at the unlocked door, and te

The final file contained coastal surveillance footage.A thin woman in a hospital coat walked toward the cliff while the wind nearly knocked her over.Adrian recognized me immediately.By the time he reached the coast, rescue teams had searched for two days. They found my shoes and hospital wristband, but no body.Half a honey-candy wrapper was caught between the rocks.Adrian knew it came from the candy beside my hospital bed. He knelt in the surf and searched until shells sliced his hands open. Rescuers dragged him to shore, and he ran into the water again. For the first time, the power of an Alpha meant nothing.Police said the currents made survival unlikely. Adrian refused the presumed-death ruling and used private aircraft, boats, and every pack contact he had from the western coast to the Pacific islands. He carried my expired access card, the bag of pill packages, and the note that told him he no longer needed to fear a child. In every city, he booked two rooms. The investigation took twelve hours.Vivian's kidnapping had been staged with hired men. Nolan created the bruises on her body. Even her fall from the terrace had been planned around the thickest trees.Every tear Adrian saw had been arranged as evidence. The files showed that he authorized only the lowest level of neural suppression. Nolan increased it to a dangerous setting and continued until morning.Adrian ordered three hours in the discipline hall with no weapons or permanent injuries. A bribed Beta shut off the cameras, extended the punishment, and allowed repeated beatings, ice-water immersion, and controlled suffocation. Then came the blood donation.Nolan detected my pregnancy on the repeat test and changed the result. He promised Adrian a safe amount, then waited until Adrian left for the border emergency before ordering a second bag.A hallway recording showed me bruised and shaking, gripping Adrian's sleeve."Test me first," I begged. "Just once."He removed my fingers and
