WARD The silver cuffs burn against my wrists but I pretend like I don't notice them. I am alone and the last thing that I want to appear is weak. Otto was left behind at the oasis. He swore to me that he would deliver a message back to Lycan City; to Keena. I need her to know that if something happens to me out here I did not just abandon her. Surprisingly the trek back to the pack house of the Kingdom of Anubis is a long one. Jeeps are waiting for us just on the outskirts of the oasis. I was wrong in assuming that the central location of the Kingdom would be off the beaten path. It is right in the center of the city of Cairo. I am sitting in the back of a Jeep with darkened windows. I gaze out of the windows of the Jeep and try to take every part of the city that I can before I am locked in a dungeon. The Head Warrior is sitting in the back seat with a rifle across his lap. "You are lycan. Why do you carry a gun?" I ask him curiously. The head warrior looks at m
KEENA The sound of someone banging on my door wakes me from my sleep. I open my eyes slightly and see that it is still dark outside. Groaning loudly, I place my head under my pillow and yell for whoever is at my door to go away. "Get up," Kayla's cheerful voice calls through my door. "It is time to go running." "No," I moan. "No to all of that." The sound of the lock clicking open catches my attention and I pull my head out from underneath my pillow. I peek out from under my blanket and see Kayla and Faris standing in my doorway. "Who gave you a key to my room?" I yell out stuffing my head back under the pillow. "You can't spend your life in this room waiting for Ward to return," Faris walks into my room and rips the blankets off of me. Kayla groans loudly when she sees that I am wearing one of Ward's shirts again. "And you have got to start wearing your own clothes." Rolling over onto my back, I fling my arms out to my side. "These smell like him," I figh
KEENA The pistol is heavy in my grip. I bounce my hand up and down several times trying to get a feel for the weight of it. My palms are sweaty and my heart is racing out of control. I have never held a gun before, much less fire one. “You are doing this for Ward”, I tell myself. He would want me to know how to protect myself. “Alright, Keena,” my brother hands me a pair of earplugs. “It’s going to be loud. Especially in this room.” I lay the gun down on the table gently, as if it is a grenade that will explode at the slightest movement. I place the earplugs in my ears and Faris says something to me that I can’t quite hear. “Huh?” I yell probably louder that I need to because several other people in the room turn and look in our direction. I shrink down a little trying to make myself smaller, but Kayla smacks me on the butt causing me to stand up straight. Faris picks up the pistol and hand it to me. He leans foreword and speaks louder this time. “Look through here to aim at the
WARD Alpha Cleo and I stare at one another for a long time. There is something that is familiar about her that I just cannot place. Her hazel eyes pierce into mine as she throws her Alpha aura over the room. She is trying to get me to submit but it isn't working. "You know me?" I ask ignoring the aura that has flooded the room. Alpha Cleo reigns in her aura and cocks her head to the side staring at me in curiosity. "I think I know you," she finally says. “Amir here thinks you may be my brother.” I laugh loudly and turn toward Amir. "Are you saying that you think I am of Alpha blood?" The thought alone is absurd. Getting to her feet, Alpha Cleo gestures for Amir and me to follow her out of her office. "There is only one way to tell," she says as we approach the elevator. "A DNA test will be run. Until we have the results I am afraid that you will have to stay in the dungeons." "I did not come here for your title or your rank," I say in desperation. "I just cam
KEENA Sitting in my father's office I don't take my eyes off the, so called, bodyguard that my father has appointed to me. The tension in the air is thick as we all glare at one another. I take this moment to take in the royal guard that is standing beside my father. He has long blond hair that is pulled into a low bun at the base of his neck. His eyes are crystal blue in color and they twinkle as they bore into my own. He couldn't be more different than Ward. Ward would have never dared to look at me in such a way. "This isn't going to work out," I finally break the silence in the room. "I don't need a new bodyguard." "Keena," my father sighs my name in frustration. "It is only until Ward comes back." "What is the point in having Faris teach me how to protect myself, if you are just going to assign me a bodyguard?" I snap at my father. "When you can prove that you can protect yourself, we will reconsider. But as of right now Jameson is going to be your new gu
KEENA The gold and silver cuffs feel cold against my skin, they do not burn. It just solidifies the fact that I am a human once again. The cuffs are connected to chains that hold me to the ground. I look around the circular room and it is still a disaster. The pentagram in the center of the floor is cracked and no longer complete. The once-stained glass windows surrounding the room are shattered and the shards of glass are still on the floor. I can't believe that I caused that much destruction in a single moment. "You were once extremely powerful," the High Priestess says with a smirk on her face. "Now you are nothing more than a human once again. If only you had this." The High Priestess holds up the amulet and I can feel the power within it pulsating through the air. It is almost like the power within the amulet is calling out to me. "I can feel the power within the amulet but I don't know how to release it." The High Priestess looks at the amulet with a mesmeriz
WARD I don’t know how long I have been down in the dungeons of the Kingdom of Anubis, but it feels like I have been down here for days. There is no natural light that comes into the dungeon, so I cannot feel the passing of time. The dungeons are dark except for a few lights in the hallway that buzz loudly constantly. The sound alone is its own form of punishment. The silver cuffs on my wrist are beginning to burn into my wrists. My skin is getting raw and blood begins to trickle down my wrists. I try to move the cuffs from rubbing the same spot but the silver stings my fingers as I try to slip them underneath the cuffs. The sound of moans comes from the cell next door. The guards visit him several times a day to torture him. I do not know what kind of information they are trying to get out of him but they are getting nowhere with him. The smell of his burning flesh fills the air, it smells so disgusting that it makes my stomach turn. “Why don’t you just give them the
WARD The paper on the hospital bed crinkles loudly under my shifting weight. Alpha Cleo’s hazel eyes are slowly turning black, her lycan is pushing forward. There is a snarl on her lips as she glares in my direction. I open my mouth to speak but Alpha Cleo growls loudly and I quickly shut my mouth. “Before you speak. Choose your words carefully,” she threatens. I inhale and exhale several times trying to control my emotions. “It is a long story,” I begin. “I have all day,” Alpha Cleo says through gritted teeth. So, I start at the beginning and I tell her everything. I explain how I was pulled off the streets of an Egyptian city as a child and how I was led to believe that I was orphaned. I explain how Keena is my mate and how the Moon Goddess let her choose her own destiny by choosing her own mate. I tell Alpha Cleo about the witches and how they were first after my mate and now they are after me. Alpha Cleo stands quietly as I recall everything that has happene
