Ronan did not move.

His bare hand stayed pressed against Elena's ribs, gold sparks still hissing where his skin met hers, and for three full heartbeats the most feared king in the realm looked like a man who had forgotten how to breathe.

Elena felt it too — a warmth that had nothing to do with fever, spreading out from the point of contact like sunlight through frozen ground. The silver poison that had eaten at her for two days was simply gone, burned away in a single flash, and in its place something ancient uncoiled inside her chest and stretched, slow and hungry, as if waking from a very long sleep.

Her wolf.

Silent since the dagger, mute since the cage, and now suddenly, violently alive.

"What," Elena said, her voice cracking, "did you just do to me?"

Ronan's jaw tightened. He pulled his hand back as though her skin had scalded him, though the sparks had done nothing but heal her. He stared down at his own palm, turning it over, flexing his fingers like he didn't recognize them.

"Nothing," he said. "I did nothing."

"You're lying."

"I do not lie." His golden eyes snapped back up to hers, and for the first time since she'd seen him cross the Pit like a walking storm, there was something underneath the fury — something closer to fear. "I have never lied in my life, slave. I simply do not yet have words for what happened."

The carriage rattled hard over uneven stone, throwing Elena sideways. She caught herself against the fur-lined bench, biting down a gasp as her body remembered, distantly, that it should still be dying. It wasn't. Her ribs had knitted closed beneath the torn linen, the wound reduced to a thin pink line where an hour ago there had been black, poisoned flesh.

She should have felt relief. Instead she felt exposed, like something had been read out of her without her consent.

"Say it," she said. "Whatever it is you're not saying. I've had enough men keep secrets from me this week to last a lifetime."

Something flickered across Ronan's face — not quite a smile, not quite pain. "You have a temper for someone who was on an auction block three hours ago."

"And you have terrible manners for a king."

Silas's voice came muffled through the carriage wall, sharp with alarm. "Your Majesty. The wards on the door flared. Is everything—"

"Fine," Ronan called back, though his eyes never left Elena. "Everything is fine."

It was, Elena thought, very clearly not fine. She could feel him now in a way she had no name for — not his aura, not the crushing weight that had dropped grown wolves to their knees in the Pit, but something quieter and stranger, a thread pulled taut between her chest and his, humming faintly whenever he moved. When his breathing changed, she felt it like a change in her own. When her pulse spiked, his jaw ticked in answer.

"You feel it," Ronan said. It wasn't a question this time.

Elena swallowed. "I don't know what I feel."

"A pull," he said slowly, as though testing whether the word would hold. "Like a hook set behind your ribs. Like you would know my location in a burning building with your eyes closed."

Her breath caught, because that was exactly it, uncannily, humiliatingly exact.

"That," Ronan said, "is a mate bond."

The word landed in the small space between them like a struck bell. Elena had heard the old stories — every wolf pup did, whispered by nursemaids and grandmothers, the tale of a bond so rare that most wolves lived and died without ever feeling its pull. A bond that could not be faked, bought, or forced. A bond that chose.

"That's not possible," she said.

"I am aware."

"You bought me an hour ago. Out of a cage."

"I am aware of that as well." His voice had gone low and rough, and beneath the golden calm of his eyes she caught something raw moving, something that looked almost like grief. "Do you understand what you're suggesting, if this is a lie? That my own blood is mistaken. That eight hundred years of Blackthorn bloodline magic simply erred, tonight, over a slave girl with dirt on her face."

"Don't call me that."

"What would you have me call you?" His gaze sharpened, taking her in again — the grime, the torn tunic, the proud set of her shoulders that no amount of chains had managed to break. "You gave the auctioneer no name. You gave me none either."

Elena's mouth went dry. Here it was — the moment she had feared since the moment Cole first dragged her out of the mud. Tell him who she was, and she became a bargaining chip, a political prize, a name Marcus Vale would pay any price to silence permanently. Stay silent, and she remained nothing. A number. Item forty-two.

She chose silence.

"No name," she said. "Just a stray you overpaid for."

Something like disappointment crossed Ronan's face, there and gone before she could be certain of it. He sat back against the dark furs, putting deliberate distance between them, as though the mate bond itself were an insult he intended to ignore through sheer force of will.

"Very well," he said. "Keep your secrets, stray. I have kept mine for longer than you've been alive."

The carriage climbed, the road turning steep and rocky beneath the wheels, and through the small barred window Elena caught her first sight of Blackthorn Keep rising out of the mountain fog — a black fortress of impossible height, its towers wrapped in circling storm clouds that never seemed to move on, its walls carved with the same crimson runes that pulsed along the carriage doors. Even from this distance, the keep radiated the same suffocating power she'd felt from Ronan in the Pit, as though the stones themselves remembered every king who had ever ruled from inside them.

"Home," Ronan said flatly, watching her stare through the bars.

"It looks like a tomb."

"For most who cross me, it becomes one."

The carriage rolled through an outer gate flanked by wolves in black-and-silver armor, every one of them dropping their eyes the instant Ronan's shadow passed. Elena watched him transform in real time — the raw, unguarded man who had just gone pale at the discovery of a mate bond folding himself back into the King of Blackthorn, spine straight, face carved from stone, golden eyes gone flat and unreadable.

When the carriage finally stopped, Silas himself opened the door, bowing low.

"Your Majesty. Shall I have the girl processed through the lower gate with the other new laborers?"

The word laborers hit the air, and Elena watched Ronan's jaw flex, once, hard. For a moment she thought he might contradict it — might announce, right there in the courtyard, that the bond in his blood had just named a filthy slave his fated match. She braced for it, half in dread and half, to her own fury, in something that felt dangerously close to hope.

He didn't.

"The cellars," Ronan said. "Laundry level. See that she's fed and the wound is dressed properly."

Silas blinked, the only crack in his composure. "Your Majesty, if she's injured, the healer's wing would be—"

"The cellars," Ronan repeated, and his voice left no room for a second question.

Elena felt the sting of it more than she wanted to admit — not the destination, which she'd expected from the moment Cole first threw her over his shoulder, but the deliberate erasing of what had happened in the carriage, folded away like something shameful. Whatever the bond meant to him, he intended to bury it as thoroughly as he'd buried his surprise.

Fine, she thought. Let him hide it. She had secrets of her own worth more than his.

Two guards took her by the arms, gentler than the ones at the Pit but firm all the same, and steered her toward a low stone archway at the base of the keep. As she was led away, she glanced back once.

Ronan stood exactly where the carriage had left him, watching her go, his bare hand — the one that had healed her, the one that had felt the bond snap taut between them — curled slowly into a fist at his side.

Their eyes met across the courtyard.

Neither looked away first.

Then the guards pulled her through the archway, down a narrow flight of black stone steps, and the cold, damp dark of Blackthorn Keep's lower levels swallowed her whole.

Elena kept walking. She had survived a wedding night dagger, a ditch in the rain, an auction block, and now, apparently, a king who could set her blood on fire with a single touch and still choose to hide her in the cellars like something he was ashamed of owning.

Whatever this bond was, whatever it demanded of her — it changed nothing.

She was still going to destroy Marcus Vale.

She simply had, it seemed, one more secret to keep while she did it.

Ten thousand gold pieces hit the auction table in a leather pouch, ringing like a death bell through the silence of the Pit.Lord Garrick sat down slowly, his face drained of all color, his ivory betting paddle slipping from his sweaty palm and dropping on the stone floor with a sharp, hollow clatter. The rest of the wealthy buyers kept their eyes glued strictly to the dirt, too terrified to even glance upat the sovereign ruler of the Blackthorn Kingdom standing at the edge of theshadows.“Unhand her," Silas Reed ordered, his harsh voice snapped the stunned auctioneer back to reality. The slave trader scrambled to the wooden stage with a heavy ring of ironkeys. His hands were trembling so violently that he dropped the keys twice against the floorboards before he finally managed to hit the keyhole. The iron chains binding Elena's ankles fell away. His hand rested lightly on the handle of his weapon, his sharp eyes sweeping over the bowed crowd, ready to cut down anyone who made a wrong move against his king.“My... The smell of damp stone and sweat hit Elena the moment the wagon stopped.Rough hands unlocked the iron cage door, dragging her out into a dark, underground cavern. Heavy stone pillars held up the low ceiling, and torches flickered along the stone walls, casting long shadows across the crowd below. This was the Pit – the famous underground market where rogues, disgraced warriors, and captured shifters were sold like livestock to the highest bidder.Elena stumbled, the chains around her ankles clanking loudly against the cold floor. Her body still felt weak from the bleeding, but her mind was awake and sharp.“Move it, girl,” Cole barked, shoving her toward a row of iron cages set against the damp wall.Elena did not cry out. She did not beg. Instead, as Cole turned his head to speak with another guard, Elena reached down with a quick, quiet motion. She scooped up a handful of dirt from the ground andsmeared it across her face, hiding her highborn features beneath a layerof grime.Sh

The mud was freezing against Elena's face.Cold rain poured from the night sky, hitting her skin like tiny needles. Every drop washed away a bit of the blood soaking her white wedding dress, turning the clear puddles around her body into light red pools."Throw her down here," a guard's voice barked from above.Elena couldn’t move her arms. She couldn't even raise her chin out ofthe wet dirt. Her body felt heavy like lead.Rough hands grabbed the lace of her gown and shoved her over the edge ofthe steep hill. The ink on the paper was barely dry. Elena Cross set down the feather pen, her hand shaking under the weight of the silver lace on her cuffs. Before her lay the official contract— a paper giving away her family's land, pack leadership, and border guards to the man she loved, Alpha Marcus Vale. “It's done,” Elena whispered, turning around in the quiet room of Ravenswood Manor. "My family’s name is safe. Father's memory can rest now. Her mother's ring caught the firelight as she turned it once around her finger, a habit older than she could remember. “When it burns cold against your skin, girl, that's the day you run,” Her mother would tell her half-jokingly as she tucked her into bed. Elena had never once felt it burn. She didn't feel it now either. She wished, later, that she had. Marcus stood near the big stone fireplace, his tall frame lit by the dying fire. He wore a dark velvet coat, his hair braided back like a proud Alpha's, and he offered her a calm, handsome smile “Saf
